When she opened her eyes again, Josephine was already lying on a hospital bed.
Stephen leaned against Diana, playing Tetris on a handheld console, while Edmund stood nearby, smiling from ear to ear.
They really looked like a family.
Josephine forced a twitch of a smile and struggled to sit up.
Edmund finally noticed she was awake and quickly helped her up.
“Josie, don’t move. Your leg was injured in the explosion.”
Josephine gently shook him off.
“At the time… it was an emergency. I thought you had already gotten
out. Don’t be mad at me.”
Edmund opened his mouth to say something else, but Stephen impatiently tossed his game aside.
“Dad’s the one doing useful things for society! Why should Mom be mad? And Diana burned her fingers too–she’s not as dramatic as Mom!”
Josephine’s eyes darkened completely.
“They’re human, so am I not?”
Diana laughed awkwardly to ease the tension. “Josie, you were just scared. Otherwise, with your good temper, you wouldn’t really care about a kid.”
Edmund jumped in smoothly. “Kids speak without thinking. He’s only five. He doesn’t know anything yet.
“Tomorrow, I have shooting practice. Want to come watch? You’ve always wanted to see my training, right? I’ll take you.”
Listening to them cheerfully agree with each other, Josephine felt a hollow emptiness grow in her chest.
“No. I’m not going.”
She never wanted to go again.
The next day, Edmund acted like he hadn’t heard her refusal, picking her up from the hospital bed and putting her in the car.
“I said I don’t want to go!”
“Josie, you’ve been acting off lately. You and Steve are drifting apart. I just want you to bond a little with him.”
