Chapter 6
“You two are best friends. Whatever you can do, I’ll teach her too.”
Edmund seemed to find a reason to convince himself. He stood next to Diana, pistol in hand.
“Look here. Aim carefully. Watch the recoil.”
He wrapped Diana in his arms, his lips brushing against the tip of her ear now and then.
Stephen had already forgotten everything that had happened earlier, muttering about how pretty Diana looked.
Josephine just stood frozen for a long moment.
She had wanted to talk to Edmund face–to–face, to finally put an end to everything between them after so many years.
But now it was clear: his heart was long gone.
Say it or not, the ending wouldn’t change.
Josephine turned and walked toward the exit alone. But before she’d taken a few steps, a sudden gust of wind whipped past her ears.
It was the sound of a gunshot.
Shocked, she looked down at her shoulder. Blood was blooming there like a red flower.

As she collapsed, she heard Diana cry out.
“Oh no! I think I hit Josie!”
Then Edmund’s voice rang out.
“It’s fine even if you shot her. I’ll take care of everything.”
Josephine was lifted onto a stretcher, blood constantly spilling from
her mouth.
In a daze, she remembered the last time she felt this much pain- during the earthquake.
She had been trapped under a beam. Glass had pierced her shoulder. She didn’t even have the strength to call for help.
Edmund had pulled the rubble off her bare–handed.
Covered in wounds, he had rushed back from the training ground that night.
It was the first time he had cried as an adult.
He had held her tight, promising to be together forever.
How ridiculous.
His “forever” lasted only a few years.
When she opened her eyes again, she smelled the familiar scent of disinfectant.
In just a few days, she had been hospitalized twice,

Edmund visibly relaxed when he saw her awake.
“Josie, you’re awake. It’s fine now. Ana was just too nervous and accidentally hurt you.
“The investigation team has put Ana in the detention room because of the accidental injury. As long as you sign an affidavit of non- prosecution, she’ll be fine.”
Accidental?
Josephine clearly remembered that she had already walked in the opposite direction from the target.
“Diana did it on purpose! This time it’s my shoulder–next time, it could’ve been my heart!”
Edmund’s expression tightened as he gripped her wrist. His strength was so intense that it felt like he might break her arm.
“I was standing right next to her. How could I not notice?
“You two have been best friends for so many years. How could you stand by and let her suffer?”
Josephine looked straight into Edmund’s bloodshot eyes.
He had stayed by her side because he was worried about Diana suffering in detention.
“Edmund, it’s you who doesn’t want her to suffer.”
Her words caught him off guard for a moment.

But instead of anger, his voice stayed calm.
“Josie, some things don’t need to be thought through so clearly. It won’t do you any good. But even if you know, you still need to sign the affidavit of non–prosecution.”
Josephine hadn’t expected him to admit his affair so calmly.
She stared at the man she had loved for so long and slapped him hard across the face.
“Are you even human?!”
Edmund’s head tilted from the slap, but he laughed.
“If it weren’t for me, you’d just be a housewife. You think you’re still some respected Mrs. Oswald? In our relationship, it’s you who needs
me!”
Footsteps echoed outside.
