“It’s getting late. You should go back and rest,” Solomon said gently to Sierra, not noticing John at the door. “I’ll have Joven take you home.”
“It’s fine, I’ll just grab a cab,” Sierra refused.
Solomon’s smile was faint as he said, “It’s dangerous to take a cab this late. I’ll feel better if Joven drives you.”
Sierra was about to refuse again, but she forced herself to agree when she looked up and saw John’s dark eyes on her. “I’ll take your offer, then..”
“Again, we’re family. Enough with the formality,” Solomon replied.
Sierra told him she would come see him again tomorrow before picking up her purse and walking out. She passed right by John without so much as a glance, heading straight down the hall with Joven until the two of them disappeared from the hallway.
John looked from the side of his eyes.
Kenneth lowered his voice. “Want me to stop her?”
“No need,” John answered casually.
“John, you’re here.” Solomon greeted him, eyes soft and face pale as he lay on the hospital bed. “It’s been over a decade since you last visited me in a hospital.”
John walked to the side of the bed, his gaze a little cool. “She’s gone. You can stop with the performance now.”
A mild confusion crossed Solomon’s refined features. “What?”
“Do you know why I’m the one in charge of Henderson Group and not you?” John’s tone was unhurried, as if none of this touched him. “Because creatures of the night that live in the darkness don’t belong on a stage, and they can never stand the light.”
“So being the leader of the group really has changed you,” Solomon teased John. “Even the way you talk sounds like a script.”
“I know you set everything up tonight,” John said, laying it out. “I know you wanted to use this to drive a wedge between me and Sierra. But don’t forget. When you hurt your enemy, you hurt yourself too.”
“You think I had something to do with the chandelier?” Solomon asked, sounding puzzled.
“And you didn’t?” John said.
“What would I get out of it?” Solomon asked.
There were plenty, but John didn’t bother to list them. Talking about it with him was pointless.
“I know you’ve always had an issue with me because of the competition between our companies,” Solomon said, keeping his tone reasonable. “But just like you, I won’t drag innocent people into it.”
“Will you swear on the safety of that woman you’re keeping at home?” John asked.
Solomon’s gaze locked on him, as if he couldn’t understand why John had been bringing her up more and more lately when he used to avoid mentioning her.
“There’s something you probably don’t know, since you brought all your trusted men here tonight to help you with your little performance,” John went on, his voice flat.
It was true that John didn’t like to drag anyone unrelated into their feud, but it didn’t mean he didn’t know how to.
Solomon’s expression was still calm. “What is it?”
Chapter 207

“While you were playing hero for your own interests, my sister–in–law just happened to run into her gambling addict of a father. I heard she went home covered in bruises,” John said as if he was mentioning something unimportant.
A flicker passed through Solomon’s eyes, but he hid it in an instant.
John saw every bit of it. “You’re thinking you had bodyguards watching over her, so there’s no way anything happened to her. Right?”
Solomon looked up.
For once, he was really studying this younger brother of his.
He had kept everything buried deep. Even Eagon, who was often at his side, had never known about it. How did John find out?
“Just because you want to protect her doesn’t mean no one wants to hurt her,” John said slowly. “By my count, she should be running into her second round of trouble right about now.”
Solomon reached for his phone without thinking.
John took in everything. “Worried?”
Solomon’s hand stilled, his heart sinking little by little.
