It’s unexpected. Not something I had given consideration to, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt inclined, almost drawn to do it. I wanted my mother to be present, even if it was in spirit. I wanted family with me. I wanted her to see how happy I was, still grieving that I never got to meet her in real life. I liked to believe she was watching over me, keeping tabs on the daughter she’d been denied. I hoped that she was proud of me. I hoped she was at peace.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Hades spoke before I could, his voice filled with warmth as I squeezed his hand on my shoulder. “That is if it’s not an imposition,” he added as my father and brother quickly shook their heads.

“Think nothing of it. In fact, we’ll take care of all the preparations if you trust us,” Damien coaxed.

“I don’t know. What if you decorate the outside all gaudy like or like a brothel?” I countered back, and my father

almost choked on his coffee.

“Hey, give us more credit than that,” Damien objected, “trust me, we’ll make it so elegant you’ll cry and ruin your makeup,” he vowed, a determined look on his face.

“Fine,” I grinned, “but what if I said I wanted a horse-drawn carriage and to feel like Cinderella?”

“Your wish is my command,” Damien teased, reaching over and tweaking my nose, “but I didn’t think you were the type,” he added, grinning.

“I’m not,” I admitted sheepishly, “in fact, I kind of want…” I hesitated and looked up at Hades who was eyeing me closely, “I want an unorthodox wedding. A black wedding dress, natural decorations, i.e., trees, plants, timber, etc.”

I’d never been one for white wedding dresses. I wanted to stand out. To be different. To be more myself than something that was expected of me.

“Unique,” Damien said wryly, “but what about Hades?” he looked at my mate, who shrugged.

“Whatever she wants.”

“She’ll have it,” my father said calmly, not fazed at all.

I guess he knew me better than I thought.
