Chapter 194
Raven POV
More than half of the hunters had been extinguished simply by the traps we’d set. I felt a sense of satisfaction, looking at the dismal group beginning to swarm onto the grounds. They were weakened. Stupid. A wise person would have retreated and regrouped but hunters had never been the sharpest tools in the shed. They were arrogant, overflowing with confidence, certain that in the end they would become the victors. Only the game had changed this time. We weren’t meekly surrendering; we weren’t simply prepared to let them take us out. We were prepared, and it was evident that we had confused them by our desire to make them extinct.
Marissa. I’d expected her, even though I didn’t know what her end goal was this time. But her pleas for help to save her had ignited something inside of me. I could hear the desperation in her voice, hear the fear. There was ho deceit in her voice, and when her own mate had sent a poisoned arrow her way, I realized how much trouble she was truly in. Against my better judgment, I urged her to follow my lead, ignoring the fighting going on behind me.
I lunged, she dodged. We circled one another, our eyes flashing, our tails swishing. I let out a low growl, pretending to show hostility towards her. It was like a game now, a dance where we moved in tandem, both of us focused on the end result. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Darius, her mate, fighting against my pack members, his arrows flying through the air, and when one got too close, he began to brandish a dagger, his body moving almost gracefully, even as Hades began to make his way towards the bastard, an evil glint in his eyes.
It wouldn’t be long now until Darius was taken care of. I would have attacked myself if I weren’t concerned that Darius would aim his arrows at Marissa on my way towards him.
I was being sentimental, perhaps even foolish but I felt as though I was partly to blame for everything that had happened between us. I’d ignored the pain I was inflicting, too intent on my own revenge to realize just how deeply MaryAnne had brainwashed Marissa. Maybe I could have done things differently, but it was too late for regrets now. I could at least soothe my conscience by helping Marissa now.
She attacked. It was slow and predictable, allowing me to quickly roll to the side. I lashed out with my paws, lightly scratching her. She hissed, turning around, her eyes flashing.
Then it happened. I knew the exact moment she felt the mate bond sever as I saw Hades in the background clamp his jaws around her mate and tear his head off his body, blood spurting everywhere. It was brutal, merciless, and somewhat horrifc but effective. Darius’s body fell to the ground, and I stopped in my tracks, no longer needing to act as Marissa shifted to her human form. She bent over, screaming, her hands clutching her stomach, tears trailing down her cheeks. I’d heard how painful it was to feel your mate died, but I’d never seen it happen in front of me before. The sight of her looking broken sent a pang through me, and I shifted, walking slowly over to her as she wiped her tears away.
“Marissa,” my voice was gentle.
