Marissa POV

“This is your room.” Melody said sourly, opening the door and staring at me icily.

It’s small. The walls are cream, deflecting from how cold the room feels. The single bed and small chest of drawers take up most of the space. The wooden floor does little to make the room more inviting. For all intents and purposes, it’s little bigger than a closet.

“The bathroom is through that door,” Melody added stiffly.

I look. It contains a toilet, shower, and sink. Basic amenities. Nothing extravagant, nothing luxurious. A reminder of my place and the position I hold now.

“Not what you’re used to, is it princess?” Melody’s voice is mocking.

She doesn’t bother hiding her disdain from me. Once, I would have confronted her, used my position to punish her, but now? Now I was just a lowly omega, and her position was higher than mine.

I swallowed my pride and ducked my head.

“Thank you,” I murmured.

“I’ll arrange for uniforms and clothes to be sent to you. I hope you like early mornings because your shift starts at 6 am, no exceptions.”

I smile tightly.

“I’ll make sure I’m awake,” I said quietly.

She nods and hurrumphs.

“See that you are. It’s not my job to be chasing after you. Report to the kitchen tomorrow morning and help the others prepare breakfast. I would suggest you be on time,” she added darkly, “because I would hate to inform Alpha Damien that you’re ignoring his instructions.”

Silence.

She turned around and stalked off, while I stood in the middle of the room, breathing shallowly and dangerously close to weeping.

I shut the door and sink onto the mattress.

It’s hard. I sigh, already anticipating the lack of sleep I’m going to get from a mattress that feels like a heavy rock beneath me.

It was the least of my concerns.

“He hates me,” I murmured, staring blankly at the wall, “This is all just a punishment.”

A punishment well deserved. I didn’t deny that. But it stung to know my own mate refused to acknowledge me or announce me. I wondered if this would be temporary or if he was planning on letting me suffer forever.
