Rejected, Abused, I Fall for the Forbidden Alpha (by Riley Scott) novel Chapter 220

Chapter 220

Marissa POV

It’s cold. The kind of cold that numbs your body all over and leaves you feeling like your body will never get warm. The air is damp, filled with mildew, and I can smell that distinct metallic smell of blood that lingers long after it’s scrubbed from the floors. The ground is hard, concrete. The darkness is heavy, the only light shining through the narrow rectangular windows near the ceiling, all covered in bars to prevent the prisoners from escaping. The dell contains a simple mattress, a toilet, and a sink. No other luxuries. The bars are silver, designed to burn flesh and keep you confined. A simple dose of wolsbane forced down my throat to prevent me from shifting. They don’t

bother to restrain me.

I sit, staring blindly into the distance, my arms wrapped around my body in a valiant attempt to bring some warmth to it. I’m naked, exposed, and feel vulnerable, but I have no doubt that’s what they want me to feel. I can sense the guard’s eyes on me, appraising, careful, ensuring I don’t try to do anything stupid.

I don’t have the energy or the motivation.

All I can think about is how he looked at me, how easily Damien condemned me without even blinking. How he’d made his assumptions based on my past and never even given me the merest hint of doubt. Like my past automatically made me the perpetrator in this instance.

It shouldn’t have hurt so much, but it did.

Having my own mate turn on me like this was more devastating than anything else he could have done.

I’m not afraid. I know that I’ll be punished for something I didn’t do, but right now all I feel is numb. Broken. I’m always going to be the woman who is judged by her past actions and not the woman I am now. My mistakes will always come into play.

I shift uncomfortably on the mattress, coming back to focus and look towards the doorway, knowing he’ll be here any minute.

He won’t let this go. An attack on a pack member is unforgivable and not tolerated.

My heart feels heavy.

Rejection would be a mercy in comparison to whatever he intends to do to me.

I hear the footsteps and my body tenses. His scent wafts towards me as the door slowly creaks open and the guards snap to attention, moving into the shadows as he walks in, every thud of his feet a death sentence.

He stops. Slowly, I raise my head and look at him. His eyes are dark, black like obsidian, and the look on his face is enough to make me feel nauseated.

I can sense the pure rage emanating from him. Rage mixed with what I can only imagine is hatred as he eyes me with his lip curled back.

“You really did it now Marissa.”

His voice is filled with disdain. I flinch and then slowly unfurl from the mattress, stepping closer as he rakes his gaze over me, his jaw clenching.

“You attacked my warrior,” he said, his voice like a whip, “you shifted in my pack house and attempted to injure Alice.”

My chest feels tight. The way he speaks to me, the sheer disgust radiating off of him, makes bile rise in my throat.

“Even if I tell you the truth, you won’t believe me. You think I’m guilty already,” I whispered.

“Alice would never do what you’re accusing her of. You’re just trying to play the victim again, and it’s not going to work this time, Marissa. This time, I’m going to make sure you feel the consequences. Just because we’re mates I’m not going to be lenient with you. So if you think that was going to be enough to protect you then you’re going to be disappointed.”

I looked at him incredulously.

“You think I’m using the fact we’re mates to go around abusing people?”

He barely reacted.

“I’m saying you’re not below it.”

I inhaled sharply.
