Chapter 238
Damien POV
I sent the first rogue flying and stepped protectively in front of Marissa’s wolf, eyeing the other ones who were circling my mate as though she were a tasty piece of meat. Once this was over, I was going to have a serious discussion with her about being so reckless when it came to her personal safety. After i had apologized and suitably grovelled, of course.
Two rogues lunge towards me, and I meet them, attempting to keep the other ones back so they don’t attack Marissa. My body moves on muscle memory, dodging, weaving, attacking with expert precision, my wolf’s instincts taking over as I tear one apart and slice the neck of the other one, leaving them lying on the ground like dust.
I turn, and Marissa is defending herself against two. I see red. These bastards have gone too far now. I snarl and head towards her, only to be stopped by two other rogues who have been waiting for their chance.
My body collides with one, sending them staggering backwards. I don’t hesitate, lunging at the other and slashing furiously at them as they attempt to defend themselves. The rogue is weak, though, and he falls. Before the first one can come at me, I clamp my jaws on the other’s neck and bite down, breaking it’s neck and moving quickly back off of them.
The other one doesn’t even get halfway before I’m leaping on top of him, both of us rolling over, our claws slashing in the air as we both fight for dominance. He stands no chance against an Alpha wolf. Vehemently aware that Marissa is still fighting furiously in the background, I slash the rogue’s stomach as we roll and watch it’s eyes widen as its guts begin to spill out. As he howls in pain, I drag my claws down his body, and then, as he collapses, I stand over him and crush his neck beneath my paw. I hear the sickening crack as his neck is broken and move away, staring in satisfaction.
One more left. Marrisa’s taken care of one, but she’s losing the fight against the last one standing. I run, flinging myself at him, and he gives a snarl, giving up his focus on Marissa and attacking me instead. I hit him with my tail, and he goes flying through the air and hits the nearest tree with a heavy thud. He slides down to the ground and awkwardly gets back up, limping slightly on one leg.
He fucking touched her. He fucking attacked my mate. I was seeing red. I stalked towards him, and I saw him looking towards the thicket of trees, trying to plot his escape.
Not on my fucking watch.
I block his exit and circle him, my rage growing by the second. He’s trapped, and he knows it. I growl, watching as he tries to back away.
I jump, and he tries to move, but my body lands on top of him, pinning him below me. The rogue begins to whimper but I have no sympathy for him. Not for these bastards who had tried to hurt my mate. I’d heard every single disgusting word they had said to her, and it had taken everything inside of me to remain focused during the fight when all I wanted was to tear each and every one of them limb from limb and give them the kind of painful death they deserved.
I tear into his neck. He howls, frantically trying to buck me off. I bite harder, and he stills. I continue, using my large canines to tear through flesh and bone. I sever his head and kick it, sending it flying in pure rage,
I turn and see her. She’s standing, her eyes fixated on me, her fur matted with blood that I fear might be hers. My anger rises. She had no idea how much danger was out here, how close she had come to being used by the rogues and killed. If I hadn’t been here, she would have been completely at their mercy. Did she have any idea what effect that had on me? The thought of being too late to save her made me feel sick to my stomach. I could feel bile rise in

my throat, and my wolf was furious, not at Marissa but at how close we came to losing her, and because it was down to our foolishness.
If she had died, I would never have been able to forgive myself.
I should have taken more care with her. I should have just accepted the mate bond but I’d been stupid and easily fooled by somebody I had trusted all these years.
