Damien POV

“Damien, are you listening to me?” Alice’s voice cut through my thoughts, and I blinked, refocusing on her, even as my body began to vibrate with hidden anger.

“MaryAnne Sinclair is alive, Damien. She killed the majority of my men and me, and Lucas barely made it out alive. We almost died, and we were forced to leave everything behind. She’s not the same Damien. MaryAnne is powerful, unstoppable. She’s stronger than any wolf I’ve ever seen, and she’s determined to kill you and Marissa

Innocent men were dead. Trusted warriors were gone when it should have been a relatively safe assignment. I felt rage course through me. They didn’t deserve to die like that. They had families and people to mourn them. I fel responsible, and I swallowed hard before quickly forming a plan of my own.

“I was just thinking of how beautiful you are. I never really noticed it before, but you’re stunning, Alice, “I blurted out sheepishly, and she blinked at me in surprise.

I almost gagged at complimenting her like that, but right now I needed her to let down her guard, and this was the only thing I could think of that would do it.

“What about your mate Damien?” Alice sneered, “I doubt she would want to hear you talk like that to another woman.”

I forced myself to chuckle.

“That girl? I have no intentions of making her Luna. She’s delusional if she thinks I will. Aaron reminded me of how important it is to have a Luna who can protect the pack and who is accepted by the pack members. Nobody will ever truly want Marissa as their Luna. Not after everything she’s done. I was easily swayed because of the mate bond, but now I see everything clearly.”

I moved closer and touched her arm, watching as her eyes widened and her lips curved into a smile.

“You’ve come to your senses?” she still sounded skeptical, “because Marissa is still here, Damien,” she said heatedly, “in the pack house and acting like a damn guest instead of a prisoner.”

“Because I have use for her,” I argued, “what better revenge is there than making her believe I want to be mates and then rejecting her in public?”

Alice’s eyes sparkled at the thought, and I felt disgusted at how openly she showed her emotions when it came to my mate.

She truly thought I would cast Marissa aside in exchange for her. She was delusional. It would never happen.

She put a hand on my chest, and I forced my body to remain relaxed, my smile plastered on my face. Her touch repulsed me and made my wolf angry, but I calmed him, allowing Alice to grasp my shirt in her hand.

“I’ve always loved you, Damien,” she breathed, fluttering her eyelashes at me, “but you always looked past me as though I was invisible. You treated me like I was nothing more than a powerful warrior and somebody to benefit you. Do you have any idea how much that hurts?”

“I was wrong,” I put my hand over hers as she stilled, “I was stupid. I thought that it was better to treat you like any other pack member so that there wouldn’t be any conflict. I pushed my feelings away and tried to convince myself that was what I wanted, but Alice, I’ve never been able to forget about you.”

“Oh, Damien,” she whispered, “you wasted so much time pushing me away. I would do anything for you, anything you wanted, so long as you loved me back.”

I held her hand tight, keeping her still. I forced my voice to remain even as I addressed her.
