Chapter 268
Aaron POV
“Beta Aaron, the alliance.” Alpha Jacob’s smile was smug as he sat in the chair, his eyes fixated on me.
“The alliance is to be strictly negotiated with me,” my voice was firm, “yet you have not provided the number of warriors you possess, your financial records, relationships with other packs, which are all vital before I come to a reasonable conclusion.”
He shifted on his chair, the smile slowly dropping.
“Surely we can forgo this kind of formality, Beta Aaron? I mean, I’m sure that there’s something we could provide you to come to a mutual agreement?”
A bribe. How unsurprising. It wasn’t unheard of when we negotiated with other packs, but this man was arrogant beyond belief.
Did he really think that was enough to persuade me?
Fool.
“Alpha Jacob, I don’t accept bribes. I only do what is beneficial to the Shadow Pack. Right now, I have to be brutally honest with you. The condition of your packhouse and grounds shows severe neglect, and I can’t help but wonder if that’s also true with other aspects of pack business.”
I was blunt.
Alpha Jacob exhaled, looking highly offended.
“Beta Aaron, I must disagree. I can provide you with the necessary information. Just give me a couple of hours to arrange it all. In the meantime, why don’t I get one of my men to show you the grounds properly? Maybe see some of my men in action?”
I hesitated, but if this was going to take hours, then I might as well take a tour of this disgusting pack.
But my mind could not help but remember the scent from last night and the silhouette of the mystery omega in
the shadows.
I wanted to see her again, properly, but nobody with that scent seemed to be in the packhouse.
It was a mystery.
“Very well,” I stood up and nodded at Alpha Jacob, who quickly mind-linked a warrior to take me outside.
It was a rather burly man with a bald, scarred head and a scar down his right cheek. His muscles bulged, and he was quite short. Not attractive in the slightest.
“Name’s Gregory,” he grunted, “the training ground is this way.”
-Evidently, he was not a talkative man.
The training ring was dismal. The grass was high, making it difficult to study footwork, and the barriers were sagging, hardly worth even being there. I shook my head and stood back, folding my arms across my chest and silently observing.
Two men lunged towards each other. There was a flurry of movements, but they were weak and easily predictable. They acted as though they were in a wrestling match rather than trying to protect themselves. Within moments,
1/2
the two of them were covered in bruises.
There was no head warrior present to call them out or correct their stance.
Instead, it looked like the men were teaching themselves, which was even more reckless. With these moves, their enemies would overpower them, and if they were this bad in human form, I hated to think what their skills were like in wolf form.
Was Alpha Jacob proud of this?
Was he delusional? Or simply naive enough to think this was acceptable? His pack was nowhere close to the same calibre as the Shadow Pack.
Damien answered my call on the first ring.
“How is it?”
I slunk into the trees, keeping my voice lowered.
“Not good, Damien. We can’t ally with this pack. They’re weak, uncultured, have no sense of pride, and I daresay it would be a huge mistake to agree.”
