Chapter 286
Aaron POV
“Damnit, Damien, do you have any idea what could have happened to Asher? Somebody has to pay for this,” I snarled, pacing back and forth in the study, my eyes blazing with righteous anger.
“Aaron, I can tell you’re upset right now,” Marissa spoke softly from her place beside Damien, her hand on his shoulder, “but you need to calm down. I understand your desire to find whoever is to blame, but losing your mind isn’t going to help anyone. We have to be subjective right now and treat this with great care. If the person thinks we’re on to them, they might even do something far worse.”
“You think it’s a coincidence that they came directly for my mate and me?” I challenged, “Just happened to make their way to the cliff face. That’s bullshit, and you know it. It was a targeted attack. Someone has a grudge against Asher or me.”
“Aaron, sit down, you’re giving me a headache watching you pace back and forth,” Damien barked.
I sat with a scowl on my face.
“You might not like to hear this, but considering this happened just after Asher came back, I’m going out on a limb and saying the attack was aimed at her.”
Marissa’s voice was apologetic.
“I came to the same conclusion,” Damien exhaled and then looked at me sharply, “you did kill Alpha Jacobs. Perhaps somebody from her old pack has come back for revenge?”
“The pack is practically disbanded. Without Alpha Jacob’s leadership or a steady stream of revenue, the only thing left is a small group of shifters stupid enough not to see the writing on the wall. None of them cares enough about revenge.”
“Nobody has specifically reached out from that pack or even listed a complaint about how you handled the matter, but that doesn’t mean you haven’t angered somebody.”
“Even so, that doesn’t explain the lack of patrol or how the rogues managed to infiltrate our territory, they had to have help,” I barked.
“I agree,” Damien acknowledged, “but who? They have to have knowledge of how our pack operates, our patrol schedule, and a way to communicate outside the pack. Put simply, it could be anyone. The warriors and even the omegas who have been here for years can be suspects. We can’t go accusing everybody,” he warned.
“Can’t you just use your alpha tone to command the traitor to come out and confess?”
Damien looked at me incredulously.
“You want me to gather the entire pack and command a traitor to come out? Do you want to create chaos? We have to know what this person is planning, and I doubt they would be stupid enough to get caught.”
“So what do you propose we do?” I snapped.
Damien exhaled.
“The reason the rogues were able to infiltrate the pack was that somebody killed two of our patrol members,” he divulged as Marissa sucked in a breath, and my eyes turned dark.
