“Wait for some time before you broach that subject. Your priority is bearing him a child. That will cement your position, and he’ll be more willing to give you whatever your heart desires,” her mother advised hastily.

“I have to sleep with him in order to do that, and he’s rejected all of my advances thus far,” Marissa pouted, a petulant look on her face.

MaryAnner opened her mouth to speak and then stopped as the saleslady came back, bearing a tray with three glasses of champagne. I see the subtle nod she gives to MaryAnne, who smiles widely at her, her eyes gleaming and an inscrutable expression on her face. I calmly watch, my face nonchalant, giving nothing away.

“Ladies, I thought you might like a glass to celebrate your upcoming nuptials,” she said, looking to Marissa.

I smiled. Mother was pleased, the woman grabbing a glass and passing it to Marissa. She grabbed another for her mother. The woman offered me the last one and I took it without hesitation, taking a sip of the fruity liquid that soothed my throat and left me feeling slightly giddy, MaryAnne smiling wider as she watched me from the corner of her eye.

MaryAnne begins to sip, a satisfied look on her face. Marissa gulps hers down and licks her lips, sighing. “That was good, but I have to get going,” she shoots a meaningful look at her mother, who nods imperceptibly. I see it but say nothing, rising to my feet, but Marissa adamantly shakes her head.

“Mother will drop you off in her limousine. There are too many bags and boxes to fit you in.”

Lies. She must think I’m naïve. The moment she had told me mother was going to be here I had known something was amiss. The looks they gave each other only confirmed my suspicions. Instead of voicing them, I simply shrugged and appeared to be unfazed by the request.
