Chapter 84
Raven POV
It takes hours. Hours that were well spent, MaryAnne Sinclair continuing to lie there unconscious through all of it. I sit in a chair, watching her, waiting. She’s tied to a table with silver chains and restraints, her legs and arms pulled out from her body. She’s naked, her clothes thrown away carelessly on the ground. My father and Damien sit in the shadows, observing, out of sight. I hold a knife in my hand, twirling it and touching the point over and over again, a crooked grin on my face. It’s almost time for the whole spectacle to begin. When she finally realized the depth of my hatred for her and saw me in a new light.
Her eyes begin to flutter open. There’s a look of bewilderment on her face followed by terror as she tries to move, only to realize she can’t. She tugs uselessly at the cuffs and chains. I stand up and deliberately move closer, giving her a pleasant smile. I tilt my head, my eyes narrowing as I look at her defiantly in the eyes.
“You,” she shouted, “what do you think you are doing? Have you gone insane? I’m a Luna for heaven’s sake.”
She shouts the word, the magic word meant to bring me pain and cause me to double over. Nothing happens. I remain upright, staring at her. She does it again and again, her eyes widening as she realizes it no longer affects me. I will never experience that excruciating pain again. Not in this lifetime. I have the moon goddess to thank for that. Her body begins to shake, her lower lip quivering.
“No,” she breathes, “it’s impossible. The spell….”
She can’t believe her eyes. The spell had been a way to control me, to make me submit, and now that was gone. She had lost her means to make me her puppet, her slave.
“Is broken,” I said casually, “and has been for a while.”
