The first person I see when I open my eyes is Zander.

He is hovering over me, his gaze unreadable, filled with an unknown emotion.

“What are you doing? Why are you here? Where is my mom?” I ask, my voice hoarse.

“Tell me why you had a panic attack when I touched you?” he counters.

“I asked you a question first. Where is my mom?” I press sternly.

“Gone to the grocery store. Now answer my question. I won’t repeat myself. Why did you have a panic attack?” His voice darkens with every word.

“None of your business. I don’t have to explain myself to you. You’re neither my husband nor my father

Go back to your wife!” I snap.

He growls.

“Don’t fuck with me, Serene. I am your mate, and I need to know everything about you. You will tell me-one way or another. Do you understand me?” 1

I roll my eyes.

He stands from the bed, looking down at me.

“There is going to be a dinner party at the pack house. All the Alphas and Lunas will be attending. You will be there-as my mate. Don’t get too happy because you are going in place of my wife. You have no say in this. The makeup crew will be here tomorrow at 3 PM. You’ll be selecting a dress today,” he says and leaves before I can protest. 1

“You look exquisite, Miss Gunn. The Alpha is definitely going to have his jaw on the floor when he sees you,” Jean, the makeup artist, teases.

I smile at his comment and glance at my reflection in the mirror.

I do look different.

My hair is curled and pinned into a beautiful bun, adorned with a tiara-like jewel.

“Come, let’s try on your dress,” Jean says, leading me to the dressing area.

After a few adjustments, the gown fits me perfectly. It accentuates my curves and highlights my cleavage.

“My, my, my. Girl, you’re going to turn heads at the ball. I don’t think the Alpha will like this,” he teases.

“Too bad I don’t care what he likes,” I smirk, and he winks.

I slip into my heels, and that’s when I notice a note inside them.

Picking it up, I immediately recognize Marcus’ handwriting.

A small smile tugs at my lips.

He is so sweet. Sometimes, I don’t understand why we aren’t compatible. We would have been a power couple.

“I’m ready,” I tell my designated driver. She nods and steps aside for me to walk out.

The Party

The event is bigger than I expected.

Zander is part of the High Court. His wolf, Atlas, is one of the universe’s leaders, commanding the utmost respect in all packs.

That’s why he needs a woman with confidence and power. And my sister is apparently dying which I don’t think it is true. When I saw her at mom’s, she looked sick but I think they are exaggerating it. She doesn’t even come out and I haven’t seen the “abomination”

And I guess I was the one.

I just left my mom’s side, using the excuse of grabbing a drink-when in reality, I just wanted to avoid my brother.

Or rather… my ex-brother

“Crystal? Is that you?” a familiar voice calls from behind me.

I turn around.

A beautiful woman with long blonde hair stands before me, wearing one of my designs.

Just by the cut and detail of the dress, I know it’s from my collection.

“Oh no, I’m not Crystal,” I correct her. “I’m Serene-her older sister.”

Recognition dawns on her face.

“Oh, yeah! I forgot. Please excuse my manners,” she says, smiling apologetically. “I thought you looked familiar. But I know for a fact the Moon Goddess doesn’t raise the cursed. You’re the famous fashion designer from London, aren’t you?”

I smirk. “That’s me.”

“I love your designs! But if I may ask… what are you doing here? I never imagined you’d belong to this world,” she says, tilting her head curiously.

“I was invited by Alpha Zander,” I answer simply.

Her eyes widen. “Are you his second-chance mate? Oh my goddess-is that even real?”

“No, no, I’m just his guest,” I quickly clarify.

“Sorry, I didn’t catch your name?” I ask.

“River. Luna River of the Blue Light Pack,” she says proudly, showing me her mark-a beautiful blue star.

River and I chat for a while, mostly about fashion, until we are interrupted by Zander and another Alpha.

I recognize him.

Alpha Mark.

He used to hang out with my brother.

“Alpha Mark, this is Luna River,” Zander introduces. “And my mate-Luna Serene”

I stare at him as if he’s grown two heads.

I am neither his mate nor his Luna.

“Actually, we are not mates, he is my sister’s mate,” I correct with a tight smile. “He’s just joking around. I’m Serene, by the way.”

Zander growls lowly, but I ignore him.

He can’t mind-link me-I severed all ties with the pack the day I left.

“Nice to meet you, Serene,” Mark says, smiling politely. “I’m sorry about Dad. I know it must be hard….”

“It’s fine,” I say with a sad smile

An awkward silence lingers before the music starts playing.

“May I have this dance, Serene?” Mark asks, holding out his hand.

I shyly nod.

He’s cute-different from most Alphas.

But he’s nothing compared to Zander.

Just as I take Mark’s hand, I am suddenly yanked backward.

“Mine!”

Zander’s voice is deep, guttural-almost feral. His eyes glow yellow.

Atlas is angry.

“Chill, boy. It’s just a dance,” Mark shrugs. “We can swap partners midway.”

He smirks and takes my hand again, leading me onto the dance floor.
