Chapter 17
“And who are you to tell me what to do?” the creepy dude says.
“Your worst nightmare if you don’t fuck away from her!” Zander growls again.
“What will you do if I don’t, huh? Come on, big boy?” the creepy man smirks.
Zander grits his teeth, and before the creepy man can utter another word, he is on the floor with a bleeding nose.
“Zander!” I shriek and try my best to pull him away from the creepy man, but my drunk state doesn’t allow me to. I slip and almost fall on my ass.
Zander moves on top of him and growls angrily.
Oh no.
Atlas is out.
“Luna, you have to do something, or else Alpha will kill him,” Faye says through the mind link. 1
”
I immediately ran to his side and, using the strength of Averia, managed to grab him and make him look into my
eyes.
His eyes are red, showing that Atlas now has full control.
“Calm down, Atlas. Look at me. I am here. Please, let’s get out of here,” I plead softly.
His eyes soften, and with one last growl, he stands up from the creepy man and drags me outside with him.
I see Tasha trying to follow me, but I shake my head, signaling her not to.
“I’ll be fine. Get the girls and go home,” I tell her through the mind link.
Once we are outside, Atlas growls angrily, then suddenly lifts me up, making me squeal.
“Atlas, what are you doing?” I squeak in a high-pitched voice.
“Shut up, little one, or so help me, I am going to turn your ass red,” he growls, and I shut up immediately.
He runs through the woods, passing trees with the speed of the wind.
After what feels like a second, we arrive in the middle of nowhere, where a small cottage stands.
He drops me to my feet and moves towards the door.
“Come,” he says, and I follow him inside, rolling my eyes.
The place is beautiful-warm and cozy, everything looking inviting.
“Wow, Zander, this place is amazing. How did you find-” The words die in my throat when my mouth is sealed with his lips.
Oh my.

Oh my.
Oh my.
Zander/Atlas is kissing me. Oh my goodness. What should I do?
I’ve wanted this kiss ever since I set my eyes on him 14 years ago, and it is finally happening.
But why do I not feel as giddy as I expected? Instead, I am trembling.
I am going to have a panic attack.
I am hyperventilating.
Zander deepens the kiss as I struggle to make him stop.
My first kiss was stolen from me. All of my firsts were taken from me, and now I feel nothing but emptiness and brokenness.
I am indeed broken.
“Stop… please,” I manage to say as he tries to invade my mouth with his tongue.
He groans and growls at the same time but doesn’t stop.
“Relax… relax,” he says soothingly and begins kissing along my neck.
My body starts to tremble. He has to stop, or I’ll pass out.
“Atlas…” I beg, but it comes out as a moan.
Memories of my monsters begin to resurface, and I close my eyes tightly.
“They are not real,” I keep muttering, and soon, it becomes a mantra.
“Serene, baby… look at me. Hey…” Zander whispers softly, caressing my hair.
After a few minutes, I open my eyes to meet his green ones.
“Zander?” I ask softly.
“Yes, it’s me. I am the only one here. No one is going to hurt you. I am going to protect you,” he says, still caressing my hair and kissing it softly.
Without thinking, I hug him and break down right there.
This is what I wanted to hear all those years ago.
“I needed you, Zander! Why did you leave me? Why did you let him break me? I needed you so much, and you hurt me! Why? Why? Why? I hate you so much!” I cry, clutching onto his shirt tightly.
“Shh… let everything out,” he coos softly, rubbing my back.

After an hour, I am finally okay-back to my normal state.
I am now sitting on the couch while Zander makes some tea for me and coffee for himself.
I keep looking outside into the deep forest, watching the trees sway from the strong wind.
Thank goodness we don’t live in the Appalachian Mountains, or else I would have made a run for it.
One of my cousins, who is married to a warrior in the Sun Down Pack located in the Appalachian Mountains, says it gets creepy after dark.
So she is mostly indoors before sundown, and the packhouse is fully locked before 6 PM. No one leaves or comes in.
Some things are too much—even for us wolves.
Seconds later, Zander comes in holding two cups.
“The rain is about to pour. I have to close the windows, heat up the room a little, and lock the door,” he says with a smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.
I return the same energy.
I sip my tea as Zander closes the door.
“We have to stay the night here. There is only one room, so you can take the bed over there, and I’ll stay on the couch,” he says. I don’t reply.
“Serene,” he says, and my eyes snap to his.
“Don’t call me that. Why am I even here? How did you find me. Why aren’t you with your wife” I snap. How dare
he call me.
“Atlas wanted you here. In fact, he has questions for you, starting with who hurt you? Don’t bother lying because you said it yourself,” he says, now standing in front of me with the speed of the wind.
“I don’t have to answer to you,” I glare at him.
“Oh, you will, because you are my mate! I am obligated to protect you!” he snaps.
“Well, that is too late now! You are my sister’s mate! Her husband! You should be with her! Not your rejected. You rejected me once but I’ll never let you fool me twice!” I shout.
“Fuck! You are so difficult!” he groans.
“What is that supposed to mean?” I say, offended.
“Tell us who hurt you in the past,” he demands.
“Stop it,” I hiss.
“Then, if you are not going to tell me, I am going to help you get over your fear of intimacy,” he says.
