Chapter 18
I wake up feeling hands around me. I try to move, but the grip tightens.
The person behind me groans, and a ghost of a smile appears on my lips.
I look out the window, watching the rays of sunlight penetrate through the glass.
The birds are chirping, and the leaves look greener from last night’s rain.
I try to move again, but Zander groans behind me, and then I feel his lips against my ear.
“If you don’t want me to fuck you senseless right here, you better stop moving,” his voice echoes in my ears, a mixture of his and Atlas’s.
“Let me go. I need to pee,” I snap at him, and I hear him sigh before finally letting me go.
I get up and walk toward the washroom without looking back at him or asking for directions.
After opening and closing several doors, I finally find the restroom. I do my business, wash my hands, and look in the mirror, taking in my appearance.
My hair is messy, my lips are swollen, and my neck is covered in hickeys.
My face instantly reddens as memories of last night flood my mind.
Zander-Atlas-didn’t hold back. He kissed me until I needed air, until I almost blacked out.
I had to soothe him, whisper sweet reassurances, and promise I wasn’t going anywhere. Otherwise, I would have woken up this morning.
I would be bearing his mark, and that is something I don’t want.
I sigh and leave the room. I stop in front of what I assume is the bedroom and push the door open.
Stepping inside, I take in my surroundings.
A king-sized bed with gray sheets and comforters sits at the center. There’s a walk-in closet, and beside the window is a nightstand with a large mirror hanging above it.
On top of the nightstand sits a picture frame.
I pick it up, and my throat tightens as if a lump has formed there.
It’s a picture of my sister and Zander. My parents. My brother, his wife, and their son. And a little girl from the last time. She looked normal from his picture.
I focus on the girl. The brown eyes and black hair matching mine tell me everything I need to know.
What happened to her now? How is she a vampire? Everything doesn’t make sense.
She has the cutest grin, looking at her father as if Zander is her prince charming, and Zander gazes at her like she’s his entire world.
But Serene-she looks like she’s seen a ghost. Her complexion is pale, her eyes lifeless, and her smile forced.

She stands far away from Zander, as if she doesn’t belong in the picture. 1
I’m lost in thought when the door bursts open.
“What the fuck are you doing with that?” Zander growls, snatching the picture from my hands.
“I… I…” My voice fails me. “What happened to my sister and your daughter?” I blurted out, and his eyes
darkened.
“Don’t fucking talk about them! You have no right to speak about them!” he growls. “Get out! Get out now!”
“No!” I shout. “I’m sick and tired of you blaming me for their predicament! I don’t even know what is wrong with them because you don’t tell me anything and you don’t let them come out. You guys are worse than Rapunzel and mother gothel! This is your fault! You rejected me and married her, knowing the consequences! She is sick because she was a coward! A coward who couldn’t live with the fact that I ran away because of her!”
Before I can comprehend what’s happening, Zander’s hand strikes my face, and I’m on the floor, clutching my
cheek.
“How dare you!” he roars and stalks toward me, fury blazing in his eyes.
Fear grips me, and I scramble backward, clutching my cheek as tears stream down my face.
He grabs my legs, yanks me back, and wraps his fingers around my throat. My back slams against the wall as his grip tightens.
“Don’t you ever-I mean ever-speak about my wife in that manner again,” he growls, his hold cutting off my air supply. “Once I’m done with you, we’ll see who the real coward is.”
I claw at his hands, but he’s too strong.
“Z… Za… Zander…” I plead, my vision blurred. My face burns, and my lungs scream for air.
Then, as if struck by lightning, he lets go.
I collapse to my knees, gasping, desperately inhaling as much air as possible.
I look up at him-fear consuming me.
He’s just like him.
He’s just like Darius.
Regret flashes across his face, but my sobs rip through me.
“Serene-” He steps toward me, but I press myself against the wall, shaking.
“Don’t come near me, you monster!” I whisper hoarsely.
“I-I’m sorry. I didn’t- I don’t- I didn’t know what came over me!” he pleads, his voice desperate.
“Please… stay away from me,” I cry.
With the little strength I have left, I shift into my wolf and bolt from the house, running deep into the woods.
