I finally broke free from the kiss, needing air. My eyes immediately landed on the Alpha from earlier. His eyes are filled with longing and anger as he stares at me.

What is wrong with everyone today?

I fake a smile at the crowd, and Zander gives me a quick peck on the lips before we join the others.

I mingle for a while and then excuse myself to leave.

“Serene!”

“Serene, wake the fuck up!”

I hear banging on my door.

I groan and open my eyes, looking at the clock.

Who the heck wakes someone up at six in the morning?!

I groan again, get out of bed, put on my robe, and go to the door.

My eyes land on Marcus, my mom, Tasha, and Faye.

“What the heck! Marc, you didn’t tell me you were coming today,” I say, jumping into his awaiting arms.

“I know, I know. I missed you too, and I wanted to surprise you, but instead, I was given a surprise,” he says softly.

“What surprise?” I ask in confusion, looking up at him.

“You’re getting married to him,” he says, and there’s a tick in his jaw.

I sigh as he puts me back on my feet. I open the door for them to enter and move to my bed.

“I don’t have a choice, Marc. I’m tied to him. My acceptance was not valid,” I tell him.

“But you can’t go through with it. After everything he’s put you through! You suffered because of him! Your sister is still fucking alive!” he says, his voice rising with each word.

“You don’t understand our world, Marcus. If we don’t get married, we are going to die! I don’t choose who I have to be with. I am not an ordinary human being, and I haven’t forgotten what he did to me. Believe me, Marc, I suffer the pain every passing day. And this is going to help my sister. Once we are married then the curse might be reversed” I tell him.

“You have to do something. He didn’t think of you when he chose your sister! He didn’t hear your cry for help when his best friend was m-” he stops, looking at my mom before sighing.

“Look, I saw everything you went through. Every night, you cry, reliving that memory… and the memories of sleepless nights in New York. Please, don’t do this. Reject him before it’s too late,” he pleads.

“Oh, goodness… I didn’t know my baby has so many scars,” Mama bursts into tears, sitting on the bed and sobbing into her hands.

I glare at Marc and hug my mom.

“I’m fine, Mom. I’m fine now. That is in the past,” I tell her.

“But you’ve been through so much, and I couldn’t even protect you. I failed you. I am so sorry, my baby,” she sobs, hugging me back.

“Everything will be fine. You raised me to be a strong woman. I can handle pain,” I say softly.

“I can’t allow you to marry him. He has destroyed my family,” Mama says.

“He’ll hurt you. I can’t let that happen. I’ll be fine, Mama. I’ve been through worse-I can handle it,” I reassure her as she continues to apologize.

I look up at Marcus and give him a small nod of reassurance, silently telling him I am not changing my mind.
