Sophia froze, her sobs turning into a frustrated wail. “You’re a monster! You pushed me into that crap, and let the whole school laugh at me! Mom, I can’t live like this!”

Eudora held the sobbing Sophia, and despite the stench, she looked at Amelia with pure resentment.

“Amelia, if you still hate us, just say so. Why take it out on your sister?”

Amelia looked genuinely confused. “When did I push her? You got receipts?”

“I don’t need receipts!” Sophia hissed.

“Oh, so we’re just making stuff up now? Cool. Then I’m saying you’ve been embezzling the family funds. That true too?”

Amelia leaned back in her chair, a playful smirk on her lips.

Sophia’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

How does Amelia know about that? How could she possibly know I’ve been moving money?

“Anyway,” Amelia continued. “When are you transferring the Westside Vineyard into my name?”

Sophia was stunned. “What vineyard? What are you talking about?”

That vineyard was her private property. There was no way she was handing it over to Amelia!

The room went quiet. Eudora stammered, “Amelia, can we just talk about this tomorrow?”

“Nope. A deal’s a deal. Let’s get it in writing now. Business is business, right?”

Amelia wasn’t budging.

She didn’t know what the Bennetts were planning yet, so she was taking the vineyard as collateral.

Anything Sophia loved, Amelia was going to take. She wanted to see how long Sophia could keep up her ‘classy socialite‘ act without her assets.

Sophia looked at Eudora, horrified. “Mom, did you really promise her the vineyard? You and Dad said we’d just give her some cash!”

Just a couple of days ago, Wiliam and Eudora said the plan was to bait Amelia back with a little extra cash so she’d agree to marry that old fossil. How the hell did my vineyard end up as the lure?

“She wouldn’t come back without it,” Eudora whispered. “We had to agree just to get her in the door for the… you know, the plan.”

Sophia looked like she was about to explode. “But my vineyard… you can’t give her my-”

She stopped mid–sentence, her eyes darting around frantically. “I just… I won’t do it!”

They were cowards who only responded to force.

Eudora looked trapped. William slammed the table, his eyes full of rage. “Look at you! All you care about is money! You think the Bennett family doesn’t keep its word?”

Amelia laughed. “Honestly? Yeah. You guys flake more than a cheap croissant.”

“Why you-!” William was speechless, his face a deep shade of crimson.

Lucas couldn’t take it anymore. He stood over Amelia, glaring. “The Westside Vineyard was a gift for Sophia’s eighteenth. Why should we give it to you? Get over yourself, Amelia.”

From the moment she walked back in, Lucas looked like he wanted to throttle her.

He’d always been the most obsessive one when it came to ‘protecting‘ Sophia. He’d helped her cover up some pretty nasty stuff over the years.

The vineyard pulled in over a hundred million a year. Half of it went to the Bennett Group–William called it “safekeeping“-and Sophia used the rest for some high–interest lending schemes Lucas was involved in.

But the lending scheme had gone south recently. The guy Sophia hired got busted, the feds froze the funds, and the vineyard was deep in the red.

In fact, Sophia had secretly mortgaged the place. She was panicking because the vineyard wasn’t even hers to give away anymore.

Amelia picked up her fork and took a bite of steak. She chewed slowly before smiling. “You guys seem really nervous. Did you already sell the place? Is that why you’re stalling?”

Julian saw an opening to help. “If Mom and Dad promised it to Amelia, they have to deliver. As a lawyer, I can represent Amelia and file a suit if necessary.”

Well, look at that. The sun actually rose in the west today. Julian’s threatening to sue his own family?

Amelia didn’t believe for a second that any Bennett was actually on her side.
