Sinking back into the chair, I let out a frustrated groan, but my eyes lit up when I spotted a paper bag sitting on the table. I picked it up hesitantly before peeking inside.

Mystomach growled at the sight of a burger and fries. Was this for me?

I was so hungry that I didn’t even let myself wonder whether it belonged to someone else. I devoured everything in the bag before walking over to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water.

I was halfway through drinking it when the office door swung open.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, and a shiver raced down my spine, my body suddenly hyperaware of the presence behind me.

It was Alvise. I didn’t even need to look.

I turned around. “Thank you,” I blurted before properly looking at him.

His suit jacket was slung over one shoulder, and the sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up to his elbows.

Alvise walked closer and tilted his head to the side. “You’re a heavy sleeper,” he said, catching me off guard.

I glared at him as his words registered. “That’s just a lie,” I said. “You’re making things up.”

“Am I?” he asked dryly before walking over to his chair and taking a seat.

I took another drink of water before sitting opposite him. “How was the meeting?” I asked.

He turned on his computer and leaned back as he watched the screen. “Okay.”

I nodded, biting my lip as I looked around. “I slept through the whole day,” I admitted, shaking my head at the ridiculousness of my actions. “Instead of actually working.”

He glanced up from his computer and stroked his chin, but he didn’t respond.

I relaxed into the chair. “Are you upset?” I asked.

“Upset?” he repeated calmly.
