My chest rose and fell with every breath, and I struggled to keep myself together. Alvise’s eyes flicked to the movement, then to my trembling hands, before he turned the chair so I was facing him.
“Why are you scared?” he asked, his voice unusually soft.
I took a deep breath. “R… Rick.”
He raised a brow. “Who is Rick?” he asked, a muscle in his jaw ticking.
My brows drew together. “The guy who kidnapped me… He was at the meeting and worked… in HR.”
Alvise straightened. “His name is not Rick,” he said, walking over to what looked like a refrigerator.
My gaze dropped to the floor as I tried to process the new information. His name wasn’t Rick?
Alvise returned with a carton of orange juice and held it out to me. I took it before unscrewing the cap and taking a sip.
I glanced at him. “He told me his name was Rick,” I said, sighing in relief as the cold orange juice actually made me feel better.
My legs stopped shaking, and I could finally breathe properly again.
“He lied,” Alvise said, grabbing a few files and walking toward the door before I could ask any follow-up questions.
He stopped and turned back to me. “I’m going to the meeting. You can stay in my office.”
I stood and lowered my gaze to the floor. “I’m sorry… I’m supposed to be working, but I…..”
“Finish the orange juice,” he said, cutting me off before walking out.
I sat back down and did exactly as he said, chugging down the entire carton. It was oddly soothing, and for the first time that day, I was able to escape my thoughts as I rested my head on the table.
My eyes fluttered shut, and slowly, I felt everything quiet down. My body relaxed, and I folded my arms on the table, using them as a pillow before sleep finally claimed me.
A loud crash jolted me awake and my pulse spiked with fear as I shot upright, flinching at the dull ache in my arms.
I stretched them out and winced.
I’d fallen asleep on them.
Another loud crack echoed, a flash of light slicing through the room, I finally relaxed a little when I realized it was thunder. Rising to my feet, I walked toward the floor-to-ceiling window and peeked outside. Rain poured relentlessly from the sky, and darkness had already settled over the city.
