I was stunned into silence, my heart pounding so violently that I clutched a hand to my chest, terrified it was about to rip free.
The air was thick with tension, so suffocating that I didn’t dare breathe properly.
Henry’s eyes hardened as he turned around. “And who the hell are you?”
Alvise looked indifferent despite Henry’s tone. He looked almost bored as he tilted his head to the side. Move.”
I could only stand there and watch, confused by the scene unfolding in front of me. I still couldn’t believe I’d been sø immersed in my conversation with Henry that I hadn’t noticed Alvise approaching.
“And why would I move?” Henry asked, taking a step toward Alvise.
Henry stood tall, and although Alvise was slightly taller, it was still a sight I wasn’t used to. I’d never seen any man dare challenge Alvise, and though Henry hadn’t done that yet, he looked like he wanted to.
“You’re standing right behind my car,” Alvise said, his voice so deep and hard at the edges that I flinched. “So get the fuck away.”
I flicked my gaze to the side.
Henry and I were indeed standing behind Alvise’s Maybach.
I stepped away immediately, though it was purely instinctive. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed. But what bothered me more was how I’d managed to miss him approaching.
Or… had he been in the car the whole time?
“You could have just said that,” Henry said. “There was no need for…”
“I’ll let you know when I give a fuck.” Alvise glanced at his watch before looking back up. “But for now, back to what I said. Move the fuck away.”
Theo, who had been standing with his back to us the whole time, turned around and walked over to stand beside Henry, probably ready to defend his boss.
Alvise’s gaze didn’t even wander to him, almost as though he didn’t consider him worthy of his attention.
I
His blue eyes, striking and piercing, had turned so cold and hard that I thought I could see the blue disappearing into black.
My pulse quickened, and my hands trembled, but I knew it wasn’t because of the tension surrounding us.
For some twisted reason… It was because he still hadn’t looked at me.
“What if I don’t want to move?” Henry squared his shoulders. “What will you do then?”
The corner of Alvise’s lips tipped up. “Why tell you when I can show you?”
A dark look crossed his eyes, one I rarely saw but knew well enough to understand it never meant anything good.
I should do something. Say something… But I couldn’t. Mostly because I didn’t know what to say… or who to say it to.
