“Henry is dead.”

“What channel?” I managed to ask, picking up the remote from the side table.

She told me the channel, and I switched to it, my fingers shaking. Henry’s face was plastered across the screen, accompanied by a blurred image of his body.

I turned off the TV immediately before setting the remote down calmly.

I couldn’t understand. What was going on? He was dead? He was really dead?

I clutched my chest, rubbing it so frantically that the buttons of my top strained against my fingers. But they didn’t stop me. Guilt, sadness, pain, confusion… I felt it all. I felt every single one of them.

“Arabella? Are you there?”

I stared down at my phone to see that Sierra was still on the line. Carefully. I picked up the phone, “Yes?”

“Oh my God! You scared me! Are you okay?”

I nodded even though she couldn’t see me, “I’m fine,” I said, my voice so calm it frightened me.

“No, you’re not.” Sierra cried out, sobbing, “I’m coming over. You need someone…”

“No, Sierra,” I said, my voice firm. “Don’t bother yourself.”

“What do you mean by ‘bother?’ Henry is no longer alive! I know you’re not okay!”

“I’m fine!” I snapped, my voice shaking, “We weren’t dating… I never… I didn’t see him that way… romantically.” A sob escaped my lips, tears falling from my eyes. “I wasted his time. I never liked him! And now… now he’s dead.”

“No!” Sierra yelled, “I’m not going to let you blame yourself. You tried your best! You gave it a try.” Her voice faltered, “I know how hard it was for you. You don’t have to like anyone you don’t like. So no… This isn’t your fault.”

I wiped the tears, but they didn’t stop coming. “But if I just told him the truth… he would have found someone who actually liked him and…”

“Stop it! That’s not true, and you know it! He made it very clear he was going to keep pursuing you no matter what.” Sierra sniffed, “I just don’t know why this had to happen. You were finally living a little.”

“I used him,” I said, clasping my hand over my mouth. “I think I used him.”

Before Sierra could try to convince me otherwise, I ended the call and screamed into iny palm, trying my best to make sure Archie didn’t hear me.

What was wrong with me? First, his car was burnt, and then now this? He was dead?

I ignored Sierra’s incoming call and looked at Henry’s last message to me. He wanted to see me again. Even after I refused to

kiss him.
