My mouth remained tightly closed. I wasn’t going to congratulate him or speak to him. Fuck him!
I stared. He stared harder, and like I was the dust under his shoe, he looked away.
He’d been to Archie’s apartment a few times in the past few days, and each time we ran into each other, he would walk right past me, like I was invisible.
I didn’t care.
“Thank you all for coming,” Alvise said, his rich accent flowing effortlessly. “Have you all been hosted well?”
Archie scoffed, “What do you think? It’s been great, man. I’m proud of you.”
I watched them speak to each other for some time before Archie patted him on the back and asked him a question. Their voices were muffled, so I couldn’t hear properly. Whatever Alvise gave as a reply had Archie smiling from ear to ear.

Alvise merely nodded, and then they walked away.
“So, are you impressed with the work so far?” Archie asked, taking his seat.
“There’s still lots to be done,” Alvise said. “There’s always room for improvement.”

lowed her trail of sight to the woman being escorted in by the two security guards who had just left our table.
They were walking towards us, and my eyes stayed on the woman. Blonde hair, plump lips, striking face and a pretty nose. My heartbeat slowed, and my nails dug into my lap.
Tatiana Ivanov.
Alvise’s fiancée.
