Alvise moved further into the room and walked past me. “I said, leave.”
rned to watch him sit down in the chair at the head of the table.
“But I just…”
“This meeting is for the merger project. You’re no longer a part of it, so you should not be here,” Alvise said, cutting me off.
Goosebumps rose across my skin, but this time, they came from embarrassment and shock.
I nodded slowly. “Understood.” Then I turned around and walked out of the conference room.
Why was he doing this to me?
He could mess with me all he wanted, but my job… That was taking it too far.
I was tired. So exhausted that I needed a break, so I turned in the opposite direction of my office, not ready for Sierra to see me this way.
Walking past the exit of the company, I sighed in relief as the air outside felt fresher against my skin. I walked past the parking lot, making up my mind to take a little stroll and clear my head.
“There you are. I thought I’d have to hide in here until it was nighttime.”
I paused. My pulse quickened as the familiar voice sent a nervous shiver down my spine. The voice had come from behind me, somewhere in the parking lot.
Slowly, I turned around, and the sight before me stole the breath from my lungs.
Theo stood on one leg, his other leg seemingly cut off.
I gasped, shocked by the sight. He looked drained, his hair dirty and messy, his hands completely bandaged.
A click tore through the air and my eyes snapped toward the source.
Theo raised a gun, pointing it directly at my head, a sadistic smile spreading across his face. “A life for a life, bitch.”

“Theo!” I yelled, taking a terrified step back. “Please don’t do this!” My voice shook with every word that left my lips.
Theo’s eyes grew darker, his face twisting with rage as he took another step forward. “You’re the reason Henry died! You!”
My eyes remained fixed on the gun pointed directly at me. I couldn’t breathe, and my legs felt so wobbly beneath me that I wasn’t sure they would hold my weight. “No… I’m not the reason he…”
“I didn’t come here to hear your stupid explanation, bitch! Go join him and explain yourself.”
It happened so fast.
Theo’s finger reached for the trigger, and a deafening gunshot tore through the air. The sound was so loud I fell to the ground, my ears ringing continuously as the world around me seemed to blur.
Blood splattered across my face, my legs, my hands, everywhere, and I waited for death to carry me away, squeezing my eyes shut as tightly as I could.
But it never came.
“Madam! Are you okay?”
I snapped my eyes open, fear gripping my chest. Why was I still alive? Who was speaking?
My vision was blurry, probably from the blood spilling from my forehead into my eyes. Strong hands grabbed me, pulling me upright, and helpless, I released the weight of my body, relaxing into the hold.
I wiped the back of my hand across my face and saw Alvise’s security guard, the same one I’d seen more often, holding me up.
“Can you see me?” he asked.
