With no emotion evident in his voice, Alvise said, “I’ll give you another chance to say the name. One last

chance.”

I fixed my gaze on my legs, bouncing my feet against the floor to stop myself from breaking down. “I… can’t.” I whispered.

“Of course,” he said, disappointment seeping into his tone.

I turned to look at him, staring at his side profile. “If I could, I would have, Alvise. I’m sorry, I…”

“You had many chances to tell me. You could have even given me a hint. But you didn’t.” He said it almost absentmindedly, like the thought of it bothered him more than he wanted to admit.

I bit my lip and glanced at the roof. “You won’t understand… She’s closer than you can imagine. She would have known immediately.”

How was I supposed to tell him the culprit was my very own brother’s soon-to-be wife? The same woman who gushed over him whenever they met and was around him anytime Archie was with him.

“So it’s someone I know?” he questioned.

I clamped my mouth shut. He was guiding the name out of me. I’d been so lost in the conversation that I hadn’t realized it. “Not sure…”

“Get. Out.”

My heart shattered. “I…”

“Out.” He commanded.

My shoulders sagged, and I sighed, giving up. I turned and opened the door, getting out of the car.

I was about to close it when his voice stopped me.

“Arabella?”

I didn’t turn to glance at him because I couldn’t afford to face him. “Yes?”

“I’ll find her. And when I do, I won’t spare her.” He announced confidently. “You can hide the name all you want, but there’s not a thing I wouldn’t do to make her suffer.”

I trembled, my legs shaking as I took a step forward. I should have been happy that Francesca was about to meet her karma, but I felt the exact opposite.

Dread.

I dreaded the day he would find out it was her. Archie’s world… the woman he thought he loved… it would all be over in an instant.

I couldn’t let that happen. Regret coursed through me. What had I done?

A guard suddenly approached me, and after shutting Alvise’s door, he gestured toward the house. “Go back inside, madam.”

The sound of the car starting and zooming off filled the air before it was replaced with complete silence.

Avise had already left.

Suddenly feeling alone and exposed in my sleepwear, I rushed inside the cottage and shut the door, only to fall to my knees in the living room, tired and exhausted. My feet hurt from the cold, and my head ached from the amount of tears I’d shed. Though altogether, the pain couldn’t compare to the hole in my heart.

I expected to feel relieved and happier after getting the weight of the past treacherous years and the memories out of my chest, but that relief had been short-lived.

A knock on the door made me jerk upright, my brows drawing together in alarm.

I walked to the door slowly and peered outside through the peephole. It was one of the guards.

“Hi,” I said cautiously.

“Hi, madam.” He held his phone up. “Sorry to disturb you, but you have a phone call from your brother. Boss asked him to reach out to me whenever he wanted to speak to you.”

My shoulders sagged in relief, and I opened the door. “Thank you,” I said, grabbing the phone. “I’ll return it when I’m done,” I assured him before closing the door and walking back inside.

“Hello?” I rasped. “Archie?”

“Arabella,” he said, his voice full of excitement.

Iraised a brow. “What’s making you so happy?” I smiled. “Come on, tell me.”

“Uhm…” Archie chuckled lightly. “Francesca and I just got married.”

Her Cunning Plot

ANABELLA’S POV

I thought I hadn’t heard him right. No… it had to be a slip-up. I was hearing things.

“What did you say?” I asked, holding my breath as I waited for his reply.

“Didn’t you hear me?” He chuckled. “I just told you Francesca and I tied the knot. Like, right now.”

“Why?” I snapped, unable to control myself. “The wedding isn’t until at least two more weeks and…” I trailed off, suddenly short of words. “Why did you do it so early?”

“Whoa! Cool down, Arabella.” Archie said, “why are you sounding like it’s a bad thing?”

I sighed, rubbing my temples. I shouldn’t have gone off on him like that, but I was extremely surprised, and this was the last news I expected to hear today.

The timing wasn’t just off; it was disastrous. I had just blurted out the truth about being blackmailed to Alvise a few minutes ago, and he had promised he was going to find the person behind it.

I was panicking, my lips trembling, and I almost yanked my hair out with the way I ran my hands through it back and forth continuously.

“I’m sorry.” I said to Archie, “I’m just surprised, that’s all.”

“I understand,” he breathed. “It was unplanned too, and very last-minute. Francesca told me she couldn’t wait to be my wife and asked why it had to take so long. I felt the same, I mean, we’ve been engaged for a couple of months, so we just decided to have our civil wedding today. It was just the two of us and her friend as a witness.” Archie explained.

I dropped to the floor, the phone still in my hand, but I was barely listening to him anymore.

Francesca planned this intentionally. She must have sensed that I would come clean with the truth after she tried to send me to jail for life, so she made Archie marry her quickly so I wouldn’t be able to expose

her.

I felt helpless as I absentmindedly listened to Archie tell me all about his day and how much he missed me not being there.

He was so happy to have married the woman he loved. If only he knew he’d married a monster.

“Arabella?” Archie groaned. “Are you even listening to me?’

I pressed my hand over my mouth to stop the scream I wanted to let out before replying to him. “I am, Archie. I’m listening to you.”

“But you don’t sound happy,” he complained. “I can hear it in your voice.”

“That’s because I’m upset you couldn’t even wait for me to get back before you got married, Archie.” I lied, though there was a little truth to it. “I can’t believe I missed your wedding.”

“It’s just a civil wedding.” He consoled me.

I forced a light laugh. “Sure, ‘just a civil wedding,’ when it’s literally one of the most important moments of your life.”

Archie sighed loudly. “Don’t worry, little Bella, I’m going to make sure no other wedding event happens without you.”

It was already too late. They were legally married, and that complicated things even more.

Francesca was now not just a huge part of his life, but a little part of mine too. I’d have to see her every single time I wanted to see my brother. It had been avoidable before because they weren’t really living together fully, but now, seeing her was inevitable.

“When are you going to send me photos?” I inquired, trying to make him feel better so he didn’t think wasn’t happy for him. “Or are you going to deny me that as well?”

Archie scoffed. “You’re so silly!” He joked. “Have you forgotten you have no phone? Not to worry, I’ll send them to Alvise and have him show you…”

“No!” I refused, still wary of Alvise’s promise. “Just hold on until I get a phone or you come to visit.”

“Ah, perfect, then. I have to go now. We need to take more photos and then go on a date.” Archie informed me. “Take care of yourself and ask the owner of this phone to call me whenever you want.”

We said our goodbyes before he ended the call, leaving me sitting on the floor in silence.

I don’t know how long I sat there for, but my back began to hurt after some time, so I had to stand up.

I returned the phone to the guard outside and walked up the stairs to my room before falling onto the bed and screaming into my pillow.

I didn’t know what to do or how to act. I couldn’t even cry because I’d already cried my eyes out while speaking to Alvise.

Francesca felt like a pest I couldn’t get rid of. One that was determined to stay in my life and make it miserable, no matter how hard I tried to get her out of it.

When would it be over?

When would I get to go to bed without feeling like the universe was against me?

When? And when would I stop waiting for the day of peace? Why couldn’t it be now?

Silence met me and my questions, and all I could do was fall asleep, hoping for my day of peace.

“Madam!”

I snapped my eyes open, my brows drawing together.

Did I just hear someone’s voice? It was probably a dream.

I hummed and went back to snuggling my pillow when the voice came again, accompanied by a loud banging on the door.

“Madam! Are you in there?”

Who is that?” Lasked, sitting up on the bed, alarmed. My eyes darted toward the door, and fear coursed through me.

I didn’t lock it.

“I’m the guard from a few hours ago.” The person outside said. “The one whose phone you used.”

That didn’t make me feel better. If anything, it only made me more alarmed. What was the guard doing inside the house?

“What’s the problem?” I asked, getting out of bed and looking around, trying to see if I had anything I could use for self-defense before taking slow steps toward the door.

My hand was already on the lock, ready to turn it, when the he spoke.

“Boss has ordered us to have you vacate the cottage.”

I paused, frowning. “Why? Is he here?”

“No, madam.”

“Then who’s taking me from here?” I asked cautiously.

“Me and three other guards.” He answered.

My frown deepened. Was Alvise avoiding me?

My

“Why didn’t he come himself?”

There was a long pause before he rasped, “Boss cannot drive now.”

My eyes widened, alarmed. What was wrong with him? My stomach dipped at the thought of something bad happening to him.

I closed my eyes, holding my breath, “Why? What do you mean?”

The guard cleared his throat. “He ran into a little problem a few hours ago.”

Take Me To Him

ARABELLA’S POV

I opened the door so fast that the guard jumped back at how suddenly it happened.

“By ‘little, what do you mean? How little are we talking about?”

He looked away. “I don’t know, ma’am. I can’t say.”

I groaned, frustrated. Why would he tell me something this crazy and then turn around and say he “couldn’t say” when I asked follow-up questions?

Alvise had to be fine, right? I hoped he was. “Where is he at now?” I demanded. “At least let me know. Was it an accident? What exactly happened?” I blurted, my heart racing so hard that I couldn’t/calm down.

The man glanced at me, but kept his eyes above my head. I scrunched up my face at the oddity. What was wrong with him?

The realization suddenly hit when I glanced down at myself. I was still in the revealing sleepwear.

Mumbling incoherent things under my breath, I stormed back into the room and almost dragged all the clothes off the rack in my search for an appropriate outfit. I finally settled for a maxi dress. I couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to the color or anything else about it.

When I got back outside, the security guard was waiting for me at the foot of the stairs, and I rushed to meet him there.

I followed behind him until we stepped out of the cottage and headed toward the waiting car. “Wait…” I said. “Where are you taking me?”

“To your new apartment.” A different guard said, opening the backseat for me.

I got into the car. “I have a new apartment?”

“Yes, you do, ma’am.” He simply said before shutting the door.

Alvise got me an apartment? My stomach fluttered with something unrecognizable, so strong that I had to close my eyes and remind myself this wasn’t the time to feel strange things.

I still didn’t know if he was safe, so I couldn’t dwell on anything else.

Two guards sat in front while one stayed on each side of me in the backseat. I looked around. “Where is Alvise?”

No one responded, their full attention fixed on the road. Even the ones sitting beside me, who weren’t driving, remained silent.

I was almost going crazy with worry about Alvise while they conveniently ignored me.

Great.

Not relenting, I faced the guard on my right. “I know you can hear me.”

He nodded. “Yes, I can, ma’am.”

why aren’t you giving me a reply? I just asked a question, did I not?”

“You did.”

55 vouche

His replies were too short and clipped, and it was fueling my irritation. “So, like I said, why didn’t you answer me?”

“We’re not on a first-name basis with the boss.” The man explained. “We do not address him or refer to him using his first name.”

I blinked and stared at him like he’d grown another head. He probably had, and I just couldn’t see it yet

What was wrong with these people, and why were they so weird? My eyes moved around the car. “So you all collectively chose not to answer because I used his first name?”

They all nodded collectively, and I rolled my eyes. Interesting. Weird, but still quite entertaining.

Wherever Alvise got these men from, they really studied him enough to know who matched his energy. They were almost as cold and weird as he was.

I cleared my throat to break the silence. “Don’t take me to the new apartment.”

The driver’s eyes met mine in the rearview mirror. “But the boss gave us strict instructions, and we have to follow them.”

“I know, but I don’t want to go to the new apartment now.”

He shared a look with the guard in the passenger seat before responding. “So where are we taking you to,

ma’am?”

“To your boss’s place.” I announced. “Wherever he is.”

“He didn’t ask us to take you there, madam.” The guard sitting on my left complained.

I flicked my gaze to him. “He didn’t, but I did.” I gritted. “And if you refuse to take me there, I’ll tell him you all addressed him by his first name in his absence.” I said, trying to see if they would fall for the bait.

The guards beside me stilled, and the two at the front shared another look. This time, they looked genuinely scared.

“I’ll take you.” The driver assured me immediately.

I shook my head at how ridiculous they were and leaned back in the seat. It was going to be a long ride. I could feel it. I was stuck with weirdos.

The car pulled to a stop in front of a high-end apartment building, and I raised my brows. How many places did Alvise have?

I was lost in my thoughts and absentmindedly followed his guards into the building, took the elevator to the top floor with them, and walked to the very first room on the floor.

One of them knocked on the door and took a step back as we waited in silence.

Avise’s voice filled the air when he said something in another language that I guessed was Russian, and the guard who knocked responded, looking at me.

I bit my lip, shifting my weight to one leg. They were definitely talking about me, and I had a feeling they’d alerted him of my arrival while we were still in the car.

I didn’t think much about it. I was just relieved that Alvise was okay enough to speak.

The guard stepped forward and opened the door, nodding his head for me to go inside.

I rubbed my palms over my maxi dress before hesitantly walking into the apartment, my heart skipping its next beat.

My eyes sought out Alvise first, and when they landed on him, my mouth hung open. He was sitting on an armchair, only in a singlet and black pants, with a huge bandage wrapped around his arm. But that wasn’ the only thing that surprised me. Despite his wound, he had a laptop on his lap while he typed furiously. his brows drawn together.

“Alvise?” I whispered, walking toward him. “Are you okay?”

He looked up, his blue eyes staring back at me, and with a confidence, arrogance, or both that a wounded person wasn’t supposed to have, he leaned back in the armchair and rubbed a hand over his jaw. “Do I look okay?”

My eyes traveled to his arm and then to the rest of his body. Apart from the bandage, nothing was amiss. “I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking you. What happened?”

He straightened up and returned to typing before nonchalantly replying to me. “I got shot.”
