Care For Him

ARABELLA’S POV

35 youth

His words sent my ears ringing and my heart almost ripping out of my chest.

“Alvise…” I crouched down until I was eye level with him, staring into his eyes, searching for any sign that something was seriously wrong with him.

He snapped his eyes up to meet mine and raised a brow. “What the fuck are you doing…”

“Are you really okay?” I blurted, searching every inch of his skin with my eyes. “You got shot?” I gasped “How? Why?” Panic swirled inside me, and without thinking, I trailed my fingers up his arm. “Does it hurt?”

I didn’t get a response for so long that I had to let my eyes travel back to him. He was already watching me, unreadable emotions hidden behind his eyes.

“How many questions do you want me to answer at a time?” Alvise asked, his eyes narrowing as they dropped to my hand on his arm.

I snatched my hand away and took a step back. The thought of him getting hurt had overwhelmed me so much that I’d forgotten about our intense conversation, the one that had led to him speeding off angrily.

“Sorry for…” I stopped myself from speaking any further. What was I apologizing for? I was only worried about him. It wasn’t a crime.

“Actually, I’m not sorry.” I said, holding his gaze. “And for the questions, you can start with one at a time.”

The corner of his lips tilted up slightly before he relaxed into the armchair again. “Where and how I got shot isn’t necessary.” Alvise muttered. “And as for whether it hurts…” He poked his inner cheek with his tongue. “It depends.” He said, and then, as if he’d already dismissed me, he returned to typing God knew what on his laptop.

“You shouldn’t be working right now.” I whispered, eyeing his bandage. Judging by the size of it, I was definitely sure it hurt, yet he was acting so uninterested in his own health.

Alvise raised a brow. “Why?”

“You’re asking why?” I scoffed. “You have a gigantic bandage on your arm after getting hit with a bullet. A BULLET.” I rasped. “What could possibly be more important than your health right now?”

“Work.” He shrugged, still typing. “And describing this…” He nodded toward the wound. “as gigantic is quite an exaggeration.”

I sighed and moved to sit on the couch. He didn’t care. And for a man like Alvise, you couldn’t help him unless he wanted to be helped.

My eyes roamed over his body and the frown etched across his face as he read something on his laptop. This wasn’t going to work.

There was nothing I could do.

roze, snapping out of my little trance. Heat crept up my cheeks, and I turned away from him because I couldn’t hide it.

“I wasn’t looking at you.” I felt the need to say.

“Of course.” He said dryly.

Desperate to change the topic, I glanced back at him and asked, “Have you had anything to eat since morning?”

Blue eyes fixed on me, unnerving me. “No, I haven’t.”

I bit my bottom lip. “Are you hungry?”

Alvise stroked his chin, his eyes still fixed on me. “Can’t say. I’ll know when I’m done with work.”

I rolled my eyes. “You cannot be serious.”

His gaze remained unwavering. “I am.”

Was the man even real? What kind of psychotic man worked after getting a bullet wound and then went on to refuse to eat until he finished working?

I didn’t know what to think about him getting hurt, and now I had to deal with his odd attitude on top of it.

I got up from the couch. “When did this happen?” I tried asking again.

“Getting shot?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

He didn’t respond immediately, like he was trying to ascertain whether he should tell me when it happened.

“An hour after I left the cottage.”

My eyes widened. “Did you drive too fast? Or did you run someone over?” I inquired, eyeing him. He didn’t look drunk, and Alvise rarely drank alcohol. “I know it can’t be from drunk driving, so what did you do to make a policeman shoot you?”

“A policeman?” An amused breath escaped his lips, and he shook his head slightly, returning his focus to

the screen.

I blinked. Why did he think that was funny?

“If you weren’t shot by a policeman, then how did you get shot?” I snapped, tired of the back and forth.

He was barely listening to me, working while I was trying to piece together what might have gone wrong.

Alvise opened his mouth, about to speak, but decided against it and shook his head. “You don’t need to concern yourself with that.”

Giving up. I walked out of the living room and strolled into the kitchen. I was hungry and needed to get food into my stomach as fast as possible before I turned the apartment upside down.

I could feel the weight of Alvise’s eyes on me as I moved around in the open kitchen. Too tired to stress, I settled for making a sandwich and coffee. I knew Alvise didn’t like his coffee with sugar and lots of milk, so I made it exactly that way, just to spite him.

I sat on the kitchen stool and ate to my satisfaction before looking at him. He was already back to working and had been at it without sparing me a glance since he’d looked away some minutes ago.

“Are you hungry now?” I asked, smiling from ear to ear.

I saw a dark smile play on his lips, but he didn’t respond. Satisfied that I’d managed to irk him a little, I jumped off the stool and took the sandwich and coffee to him.

I stopped right in front of him, invading his personal space as I shoved the food into his face. “Here.”

Alvise flicked his eyes to it, narrowing them like it carried bacteria. “I don’t drink coffee with milk…”

“I spent my valuable time in the kitchen making this for you, so yes, you’re going to drink it.” I instructed, glaring at him.

He gave me a blank look but grabbed the plate and mug from me, dropping them on the side table.

“I’m waiting.” I pressed.

“For?”

“You’r

“You’re not eating.”

Alvise stared at me like I’d gone crazy. “You’re going to stand here until I eat?”

I nodded, smiling just to piss him off. “Precisely.”

He closed his laptop and set it on the table. Then, without breaking eye contact, he leaned back into the armchair. “Feed me.”

Feeding Him

ARABELLA’S POV

Alvise tapped his finger against the armchair, leaning back and watching me intently, like he was actually waiting for me.

Wait. “You’re serious?”

He shrugged. “I always am, Arabella.”

“Why would you want me to feed you?”

“I have a bullet wound.”

I bit my lip. “I can see that, but you were able to work just fine. Why can’t you eat normally too?”

“I don’t want to.”

I opened my mouth. Closed it, only to open it again, but no words came out. Alvise had to have hit his head on something after the incident.

I leaned down to touch his forehead, and then his chest. Just to be extra sure, I also checked his pulse, but everything seemed alright. I frowned. Was it internal bleeding?

“What are you doing?” His cold voice sizzled through the air, sending a shiver down my spine.

With my hand still on his wrist, I snatched it back but didn’t move away. “I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with you.”

His stoic face remained stoic, his only reaction being a slight raise of his brows. “I’m sure I’m perfectly fine, but I can’t say the same for you.”

Ignoring his rude comment, I yanked the plate off the table angrily and picked up a sandwich, shoving it toward his mouth.

Alvise shook his head. “Not like that.”

I groaned. “What do you mean?”

He was unfazed. “The distance from your hand to my mouth is too much because I’m sitting.” He pointed

out.

“Then what would you have me do?” I shot back.

“Sit on my lap.”

Air disappeared from my lungs, my throat becoming extremely dry. “Al…” I was at a loss for words.

I studied his face. It was unreadable, but I didn’t miss the spark in his eyes. “I know what you’re doing.” I

told him.

“You do?” Alvise stroked his chin. “And what am I doing?” he asked, his tone as cold as it always was.
