Blamed Him

ARABELLA’S POV

Alvise’s brows drew together, and he ran his hands through his hair, his eyes so sharp and intense as he shot me a hard glare. “I made it worse? How so?”

I didn’t hold back. “You treated me like shit. You avoided me, spoke rudely to me, and disregarded me at any chance you got.”

“You fucking blocked me after we were intimate and ignored me when I tried to reach out without telling me what was really going on. How did you expect me to react?”

I looked away, unable to say anything else. I wasn’t disputing the fact that I had done him wrong. I just wanted him to understand me… to try. I never did those things intentionally, and he already knew that. But

he… still hurt me.

And I didn’t want to feel the way I felt right now, but I had some resentment bottled up inside me. I thought I’d moved past the way he used to talk to me at work or make rude remarks, but I hadn’t.

“You’re going to stay here.” Alvise said after some time, grabbing his car keys from the table. “And don’t do anything fucking stupid.”

I flicked my gaze to him, then trailed it down to his arm. “You’re hurt. Why do you want to drive in this state?”

“Don’t act like you don’t want me driving because you care about my arm.” He said, walking to the door. “You just don’t want me to go to Archie’s place.”

“That’s not why.” I retorted. “You got shot a few hours ago, and it’s not…”

“I’ll be fine.” Alvise snapped.

My stomach dipped at his tone. “As always, you speak to me like that.” I said, walking to the windows.

Pin-drop silence filled the room, and I held my breath through every second. I wanted him to stay… not because of Francesca, but because I feared how damaged my mind would become if I were left alone right

now.

Hope swirled inside me when I didn’t hear him leave, and a small smile curved my lips, but before I could turn around and thank him, the door opened and closed.

My face fell, and I tipped my head up because, no. I was done fucking crying.

I hope this time, I keep to my word.

“Madam, you’ve not had anything to eat. What can we get you?”

I scoffed, glancing at the security guard before turning back to the card game I was playing by myself. “I don’t want to eat.”

He cleared his throat. “I don’t think my boss would like to hear that.”

Why were they so scared of him? If he was treating them badly, couldn’t they just quit and go find another jobe

“What’s your name?” I asked, fumbling with the cards.

“Nico.”

I stroked my chin. “Ah, Nico. Nice name.”

“So you know what it means?” he asked, a hint of excitement in his tone.

I looked up, my eyes meeting his almond-shaped ones. “I have no idea,” I said, scratching the back of my head.

I’d just said it because I was being nice. I wasn’t Russian. How did he expect me to know what his name

meant?

“Sure.” Nico said, “Now what do you want me to get you?”

“I already told you I don’t want to eat anything.” I repeated, giving up on the card game.

It was too complicated, and I didn’t really know what I was doing.

“I’m just trying to do my job, madam.” He pressed. “I don’t want to get in trouble.”

I scrunched my nose up. “Why would you get in trouble because I refused food?” I scoffed. “Isn’t that a little bit of an exaggeration?”

Nico opened his mouth, about to say something, but decided better of it and walked to the door. “I’ll be outside if you need me, madam…”

“Please stop calling me that. I’ve heard it so much within the past twenty-four hours, I think I still hear it in my dreams.” I said, relaxing into the armchair.

Nico shook his head, probably at how dramatic I was, before walking out.

Alvise’s scent was all over the armchair even though he’d left many hours ago. I’d tried my best not to let my mind wander to where he was or what he’d gone to do, though that was all I seemed to be able to think about.

What was he going to do to Francesca? Arrest her? And what about my brother? How would he survive it?

The whole situation was a mess. One that was so bad, all I wanted to do was run far away. Somewhere where I wouldn’t have to dread the day I came face-to-face with my Archie again.

I had nothing to say to him.

Nothing.

Because whether I liked it or not, by extension, I had ruined his life. I’d made him waste his time, investing continuously, both emotionally and financially, in someone who didn’t deserve it.

It was finally time to face the consequences of my actions, and I dreaded every moment of it.

at there for a long time, and a few hours later, it was already midnight. The moon cast a dim glow into the room, making up for the darkness that had filled the space.

I’d refused to turn on the light because I just wasn’t in the mood for it, and now the moon forced me to look around the living room.

I sat up, about to get to my feet when the door opened and closed. I froze, pausing with my hands on my knees as my gaze dropped to the floor.

I knew it was him. My body already gave it away, so I refused to look at him.

Alvise walked past me wordlessly and headed to what I assumed was his bedroom.

I released the breath I’d been holding and stood up, quietly pacing around the room. If he was back now did that mean it was over and the deed was done?

Approaching footsteps made me pause, and against my better judgment, I turned around.

Without looking at me as he walked to the door, Alvise said, “Follow me.”

I frowned, my heart pounding frantically. “Where?”

He grabbed the doorknob and turned around, the blue depths of his eyes pulling me in. “To see your blackmailer.”

Petty…

ARABELLA’S POV

I never thought I’d ever be scared or devastated to go see my brother in my life.

It had just never occurred to me that one day, he would be the last person I wanted to see. I felt awful, terrified, and embarrassed all at once.

“Do I really have to be present?” I mumbled, glaring at the busy streets, lit up and active, a total contrast to what I felt and how I felt inside.

Alvise, who still hadn’t spoken a word to me or even spared me a glance after informing me that we were going to Archie’s apartment, turned on the radio.

Alvise never used the radio in his car. I knew this because they hadn’t been a single instance where I’d been in his car and he’d turned it on, so why had he suddenly picked up this new habit?

He was telling me to shut up.

I raised a brow. “If you don’t want to speak to me, don’t. You don’t have to be this petty.”

There was no reply, and I wasn’t expecting one, so I didn’t say anything else. I kept my attention fixed on him as he drove.

His arm flexed with every movement of his hand on the steering wheel, and I could see the motion physically affecting his wound. His face remained blank, but the way the veins on his forehead stood out was enough to tell me he was in pain.

“When I told you not to drive, you didn’t listen to me.” I hummed, “I guess you can see what I’m talking

about now.”

“And she called me petty.” He scoffed, speeding up even more, the veins in his hands flexing whenever he worked the gear lever.

Heat rose to my cheeks, and I turned my attention back to the road. “If you can be petty, I can too. I mean, it’s only fair.”

The rest of the ride was quiet, except for the awful songs playing on the radio. At some point, Alvise got fed up with them too and turned it off.

We were now walking into the apartment building, with Alvise walking ahead and keeping as much distance between us as possible.

“Isn’t that the girl who was accused of killing Henry Ashford?”

I halted, unable to move another step after hearing someone whisper behind me.

“Looks like her.” Someone replied, “but the news was later tagged as fake news, so I don’t know.”

I itched to turn around and say something, to defend myself, but what was I going to say? Closing my eyes,

I tuned out their chatter and walked into the lobby, holding my breath.

If someone tried to call me out again, I would lose it. People needed to leave me alone. I’d had enough.

The elevator doors were about to close when I walked in. Alvise stood in the middle of it, a frown on his face and his hands slipped into his pockets.

My eyes trailed over his dress shirt and the way it clung to his skin before I lowered my gaze to the floor.

I wasn’t going to get distracted.

“What took you so long?” He asked, turning to look at me.

I glanced at him and shook my head. “Nothing.”

Alvise didn’t look convinced. “I would say you’re a bad liar, but…” He rubbed his thumb over his upper lip. “I’ve realized just how good you are at lying.”

My face fell.

I knew exactly what he meant, and that was probably why his words pierced me even more.

“Being mean or cruel isn’t attractive.” I retorted, vulnerability seeping into my voice. “It’s ugly.”

Alvise stepped closer, raising a brow, an amused look on his face. “Are you calling me ugly?”

I looked away.

The man could be many things, but ugly was definitely not one of them, and he knew it.

“Not everything is physical.” I whispered, “if your soul is ugly, it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside.”

I winced at how weird I sounded. When had the conversation turned into a lecture on souls and beauty?

Perhaps I needed sleep.

“That was truly inspiring.”

Smiling, I looked up to catch his eye, but there was no humor in them, so my smile disappeared.

He was determined to keep his distance. I should get the message, and I had.

The elevator doors opened, and I walked out, not stopping until I paused in front of Archie’s door.

The sight before it made me raise my brows. There were guards waiting at his door, and they all looked so cold and dangerous that I had to take a step back.

I eyed each of them. “What’s going on?”

They didn’t even blink in my direction, so I knew getting a reply was impossible.

I felt Alvise stop behind me, so I asked, “Why do you have guards in front of my brother’s door?”

“Because I want to.”

I looked over my shoulder, meeting hard blue eyes and a tight jaw. “This is unnecessary.”

He nodded toward the door. “Open the door, Arabella.”

I turned to the door, my hands shaking and my stomach tight with anxiety as I grabbed the doorknob and pushed the door open.

Like a thief scared of getting caught, I tiptoed inside, my eyes closed in fear of seeing my brother.

I was met with no sound, so I opened my eyes. “Why is it empty?” I muttered, looking around the empty living room.

Alvise walked past me, and I felt compelled to question him. “Where are they?”

“I left your brother in the living room before leaving.” Alvise clipped, “I don’t know where he is.”

I raised my brows suspiciously. Not once while speaking to me did he look me in the eye. That was odd, considering he was the same person who always maintained eye contact.

“You were here for hours.” I pointed out, stalking toward him. “Why wouldn’t you know where he is?”

He drew his dark brows together. “Because I just don’t.”

I nodded, raising my hands in surrender. “Okay, sorry to bother you.” I let my eyes travel around again before glancing at Alvise. “But, where is Francesca?”

His eyes turned darker, narrowing slightly before he moved past me and mumbled, “In the basement.”
