“You’re trying to aggravate me so I’ll leave.” I sat on his lap without warning, straddling him. “But you’ll be the one to do that first.”
His gaze, lazy and now cold, dropped to my body covering his and then returned to my face. “This is quite a bit too much, don’t you think?”
I shoved the sandwich into his mouth and waited for him to take a bite. Alvise was hesitant, glaring at (he- food and then at me before finally taking a bite.
“Why is this ‘too much”?” I asked the follow-up question. “You asked me to sit on your lap.”
“But I didn’t ask you to practically straddle me.” He said between bites.
My stomach fluttered with butterflies, my head hazy as I watched his lips move while he chewed. The man had been shot just hours ago, but his scent, fresh and addictive, still wafted to my nose.
“Well, my interpretation of what you said was that you missed me and craved my touch. I joked, grabbing the coffee from the table and bringing it to his lips.
His eyes turned dark, so dark that I dropped my gaze lower to avoid looking into them. I kept my eyes on his lips instead, but that wasn’t any better for the tingles spreading across my skin.
He moved his lips over the mug and took a sip. I watched his eyes narrow, and a deep frown appeared on his face, a muscle twitching in his jaw.
He hated it. Great. Mission accomplished.
“I know you did this intentionally.” He said, darting his eyes to the coffee.
“You would be absolutely correct.” I confirmed before going back to feeding him.
A few minutes later, we were done, and there wasn’t a flicker of amusement on his face. He hadn’t expected me to actually carry on with feeding him.
“So, how was it?” I asked curiously, though a little part of me was anxious. “Did you like it?”
“The sandwich was surprisingly okay.” He said, making me stick out my tongue.
“What do you mean by ‘surprisingly’? Did you expect it to be bad?”
“Yes.” He said, not bothering to sugarcoat it.
Our faces were now inches apart, and all I had to do was move a little and we’d be kissing. The thought made my fingers tremble, and I had to place my hands on his shoulders to steady myself.
“And the coffee?” I whispered.
Alvise’s intense eyes bored into mine. “It was terrible.”
A smile broke out on my lips, and before I could stop it, a stupid blush spread all the way to my cheeks. I frantically buried my head in his neck to hide it.
My eyes almost bulged out of their sockets when I realized what I’d done, and I expected him to push me away, but he didn’t.

The air became thick around us, my head tucked into his neck, our chests pressed close. So close that I could feel his steady heartbeat.
“I new you would hate it, and that’s why I made it that way.” I mumbled.
“Is it that, or you’re just a terrible cook?” He phrased it as a statement, not a question.
I straightened out, putting the distance back between us. My eyes dropped to my hands on his shoulders and my legs straddling his. I was the one touching him, not the other way around. He kept his hands at a distance from me, not even letting them graze my skin.
That made me feel weird, so I stood up and took a step back. My body groaned in protest/from the loss of contact, but my self-respect came first. I wasn’t desperate for him to touch me, and I surely wouldn’t le him have that narrative.
“Oh, please. What would you know about cooking abilities?” I snorted. “I’m sure you can’t cook.”
“I can. Perfectly well.”
His reply pissed me off. Why did he have to be good at almost everything? His ego just had to be fed every single day.
“Anyone can say that. When you have witnesses to back up your claim, you can talk to me.”
Alvise nodded. “Well…” He furrowed his brows, about to continue, but there was a knock on the door, cutting him off.
“Pedro?”
“Yes, it’s me, boss.” The person at the door said, his voice thick with a slight Russian accent similar to Alvise’s.
Alvise leaned back. “Come in. It’s open.”
Pedro, an average-height guy I guessed was around Alvise’s age, walked in, dressed fully in a three-piece suit. Without even a glance in my direction, he walked to Alvise and handed him a flash drive.
“We have a lead in the investigation, sir.”
My heart pounded in my chest, sweat forming on my forehead. What investigation? Was it about me being blackmailed? How could they have a lead so fast?
Alvise nodded. “Who is it?”
Pedro glanced at me before turning back to Alvise. “Her brother’s fiancée.”

I shook my head, a knot forming in my stomach and twisting so violently that I felt like I couldn’t physically take it.
I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I just kept shaking my head. “No… that’s… that’s not true.” I choked out.
Pedro ignored me and focused on Alvise. “It is, boss. We contacted the hotel and got footage from that night. Though most of it was surprisingly deleted, we were able to get our hands on the ones that weren’t tampered with. Aside from the photos, we checked phone records and conversations between them.”
They checked our phone records? How?
It felt like the walls were closing in on me, and I felt so suffocated that I stumbled toward a nearby wall and leaned against it to support myself while fanning my face.
I tuned out the rest of the conversation, unable to listen to Pedro speaking fact after fact, calmly stating that all the evidence they had gathered was in the flash drive.
I felt sick.
“Okay.” Alvise’s voice snapped me back to reality. “You may leave.”
My eyes snapped to him, and my blood seemed to freeze in my veins. His eyes were nearly bloodshot, the blue in them now so dark that it felt like I was staring into the eyes of someone else.
I’d been so focused on Pedro’s words that I hadn’t paid attention to Alvise’s reaction.
I swallowed hard, pressing myself further against the wall. I didn’t know this man anymore, and I didn’t know what he was capable of. He looked deadly.
Alvise clasped his hands together, his jaw tight and the veins in his forearms standing out from how hard he was gripping his hands together.
He was eerily calm, not saying a word, but the tension visibly radiating from him terrified me more than his angry words ever could.
I didn’t know what to do. It was practically over.
After more than four years of going through hell and barely crawling my way through it, the truth had finally been revealed. Only this time, the person who was going to face the wrath wasn’t my brother’s girlfriend or fiancée.
It was his wife.
No.
I had to go. I had to do something.
I pushed off the wall and headed for the door, my legs and hands quivering, the desperate need to get to Archie and Francesca before Alvise did eating at me and making me frantic.

“Ah!” I yelled as strong hands grabbed my arm and yanked me back with so much force that my breath caught in my throat. I choked on air, nearly tumbling to the ground.
“Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” Alvise snapped, his voice harsh and cold.
I backed into the wall, putting as much distance between us as I could. “I…”
“You’re going to warn her, aren’t you?”
I looked away, guilt, embarrassment, and disappointment in myself flitting through me.
“Do you know how stupid that is?” He demanded, approaching me.
“They… they’re married now.” I whispered, closing my eyes as the fact physically hurt to say out loud.
Instead of surprise or remorse, I was met with indifference from Alvise. “When?”
“Yesterday.” I breathed. “He called me and said they had a legal wedding, Alvise. She… she made him marty her yesterday.”
His eyes narrowed. “Is that why you want to go help the same woman who has blackmailed you for years? Because she’s your sister-in-law?”
I flinched, wincing at his tone and his words. He said it like I was pathetic, like I was acting like a complete fool.
I glared at him. Yes, I couldn’t deny that my plan to go warn her was stupid, but I was in a tight spot. The least he could do was try to understand.
“You don’t understand…”
“I don’t want to understand!” He cut me off. “You told no one, NO ONE, that she was holding nude photos of you. There’s nothing about this situation I want to understand.”
I tried to step away from him, disappointed by the way he disregarded everything I’d had to put up with and somehow turned it into my fault, but he pinned my hand above my head against the wall, stopping me from moving away.
Frustrated, I yelled in his face, “You have NO idea what it was like and what it’s still like today! I don’t even expect you to understand,” I retorted. “She’s now my brother’s wife. Your BEST FRIEND’S wife! Archie would be traumatized if you…”
“No.” Alvise shook his head. “Your brother would be more traumatized if he found out you stood on the sidelines and watched him date and marry a woman who was ruining your life.” He revealed, his voice cutting through me. “The only person traumatizing him is you.”
My face fell, and my whole heart shattered. Hearing those words from Alvise felt like a slap across the face.
The only reason I’d put up with Francesca in the first place was for Archie, before anything else. I’d thought about how much he would hate to see my nudes flying around, how devastated he’d be to know I’d slept with his best friend, how much it would hurt him to know his girlfriend was obsessed with another man.
I thought about him first.

And now, I was being told I’d be the one causing him pain?
Nelt sick.
I thrashed against Alvise’s hold. “Let me go.”
He refused to back away, and that aggravated me even more. “I said let me go!” I yelled.

“You’re not leaving this room if that’s what you’re thinking, Arabella.” He said with determination. “I’m no going to let her go scot-free, not even if it means I have to lock you in here to do so.”
“Then lock me up!” I shot back. “I’m not fighting you, am I? Matter of fact, lock me up and throw away the keys. It wouldn’t compare to what you’ve done to me.”
Alvise released my hands and stepped back. “What I’ve done to you?” He breathed out in disbelief. “ME”
“Yes.” I said, walking to the other side of the room because I couldn’t stand being close to him. I could run, but I knew it would be of no use. His guards were probably waiting outside.
My eyes met his from across the room. “I might be acting like a stupid, dumb girl to you, but you would NEVER understand how difficult it was for me to watch Archie be with her and how HORRIBLE I feel now knowing he married her.” I said, a tear slipping from my eye.
“So don’t you dare undermine what I’ve been through,” I continued. “Because if anything, you made it
worse.”
