owed myself everything.

Now I moved on from this was left to me. I would miss my brother, and I just hoped he would come back soon… not to forgive me, but at least so I could see him and be sure he was safe.

I didn’t mind moving out of London for him if it would make him more comfortable. I owed it to him.

After the struggle and inner turmoil, I finally glanced at Alvise. His eyes, blue as ever and narrowed, were already fixed on me.

I shifted under his gaze, the weight of the question sitting heavily on the tip of my tongue until I just had to release it. “If Francesca wasn’t there that night, or if… I had told you about her… would things have been different?”

One second turned into several seconds, and then those turned into minutes. Alvise stood there, watching me through it all, his gaze so intense that I held my breath beneath the weight of it.

“Yes….” He rubbed his upper lip with his thumb. “It would have been different. But…” He seemed lost in thought. “I’m not sure you would have liked that outcome either.” He shook his head. “This might have been for the best.”

I nodded, accepting the truth for what it was and appreciating his honesty. I looked around and concluded I could never stay here. It would be too suffocating without Archie.

With that thought in mind, I walked to the door and opened it. I was already outside when I turned back to look at Alvise for what I believed would be the last time.

“This is goodbye.”

ARABELLA’S POV

“Loosen up a little, Arabella!”

I sighed, staring at Sierra as she danced, moving her waist from side to side and trying to pull my hands up so I could do the same.

I couldn’t.

I looked around the club, taking in how packed it was, and almost shivered in disgust.

I’d never been a fan of clubs, but now it just seemed to have gotten worse. Nothing interested me anymore. The loud music, flashing lights, drunken laughter…. it all felt like meaningless noise.

Sierra huffed a frustrated breath and sat down beside me, giving up. “You’re such a killjoy right now.”

“I’m sorry.” I said absentmindedly. “I can’t help it.”

And it was the truth. It had officially been over two weeks since I last saw my brother, and life without him had been the worst thing I could ever imagine.

I was trying to adjust to it, but all my efforts had proved futile.

Aside from the raging guilt I felt anytime I thought about Archie, there was also one person I couldn’t get out of my mind whenever I slept.

His eyes, scent, and even his touch seemed to linger in my mind every single night, though thinking of him was definitely not intentional on my part.

I’d never wanted to forget anyone in my life as badly as I wanted to forget Alvise. But it seemed like each time I tried, I only ended up thinking about him for even longer.

Soft, small hands wrapped around my shoulder, pulling me closer. “You’re zoning out again,” Sierra whispered, rubbing my back with her palm.

I relaxed into her touch and smiled. “You should have come here without me. Look at you babysitting instead of having fun.”

She smacked my arm. “I came here FOR you! I wanted to lighten up your mood and get some colour back in your face.”

I chuckled lightly. “Don’t worry about me, Sierra. Go dance a little. I would hate myself if you just sat by me all night.”

“No.”

“Stop being stubborn.”

“You’re the one being stubborn.”

“And how is that?”

Sierra gave me a blank look. “Where do I start from? What about the fact that it’s been months since I saw you actually have fun or smile genuinely?”

“Its been only two weeks.” I said, forcing a smile. “Stop exaggerating.”

She opened her mouth to say something before Cassie interrupted her as she approached us.”

“I knew I saw you two girls!” Cassic said, smiling from ear to ear.

A weird feeling settled in my gut. It could be purely coincidental, but like I’d said before, I found it weird that I ran into her every single time.

“You’re always sighting me from a distance.” I joked. “It’s becoming very frequent.”

Cassie’s wide smile faltered a little, but she quickly regained her composure. “I guess we just like to hang out in the same places.”

I nodded. “I guess so.”

Sierra was still quiet, looking from me to Cassie, unsure of what to do. I’d already told her about the weird instances where I’d run into Cassie and that one time I saw her with Tatiana, so I could tell she held some

form of resentment.

To lighten the mood, I asked, “So, what brings you here?”

It was a dumb question. She was obviously at the club to party.

“Well…” Cassie threw her head back and laughed. “I’m here to have a little bit of fun. This year has been a whirlwind for me.”

“That makes two of us, girl.” Sierra chimed in, raising her champagne glass. “To surviving the year, though we’re just halfway through it!”

I grinned and raised my very full champagne glass to clink it with theirs. Half of it was gone by the time we were done cheering, but it was fun either way.

“Why don’t I invite you both to our booth? It’s less congested than this one, and you can sit down without bumping heads with some sweaty stranger.” Cassie offered politely, pointing to the exclusive booth opposite ours.

I shared a look with Sierra, and she shrugged. “I don’t think it’ll hurt for us to try it. Besides, we’re not having any fun here either.”

All I wanted to do was go home.

But seeing Sierra excited about going there made me want to go as well, just to give her a chance to have

fun.

I was sure if I declined, she would decline too.

Standing up, I nodded. “Yes, sure. Let’s go.”

Cassie led the way while Sierra and I walked hand in hand behind her.

Walking into the booth, I almost turned right back, but Sierra’s grip on my hand was strong as we shared yet another wary look.

The only familiar face in the small group of people there was Cassic, though it wasn’t surprising because we didn’t share the same group of friends.

The problem was that ninety percent of them were men. Men who were well into their thirties and looked like you couldn’t trust them around a bag of cash.

How did Cassie get involved with people like this?

The women present weren’t any better. They seemed to be practically glued to the men, which meant they were most likely ready to do whatever they wanted.

It was weird.

“Trust me, I’m uncomfortable too.” Sierra leaned in and whispered in my ear. “We can stay for just five minutes to be polite, and then we get the hell out of here.”

I sighed in relief, glad that we were on the same page.

“Don’t you want to have a seat?” one of the men asked, a cigarette tucked behind his ear.

He looked like what a typical gangster was expected to look like. From the harsh lines of his face to the permanent scowl etched on his lips and the strange tattoos covering his body, the gangster in him was unmistakable.

Though, the longer I stared at him, the more my heart rate picked up. There was something about his accent and light hair that was off. He looked… different.

“Are you both mute?” He snapped, throwing back his glass of what I presumed was vodka into his mouth.

And then it hit me.

The thing that was off about him? His accent.

It was a little familiar… My eyes widened. The gangster was Russian.

For some reason, that made a knot form in my stomach. I gripped Sierra’s hand tighter and tugged her closer, taking a step back. “We’re just going to use the restroom.”

We turned back and made a run for the door, but something sharp stung my skin and cut through it. Rough hands grabbed me, and someone whispered into my car before everything turned blurry.

“No, you aren’t.”

He’s A Shadow

ARABELLA’S POV

My body was weak, and even though my eyes were wide open, I could barely see a thing.

It felt like I was trapped in darkness, with even my eyes giving up on me.

I tried to move, but I regretted it immediately. My whole body felt stiff, like it had been tied/down and frozen in place for months.

Not even my legs were free, and the realization suddenly made everything feel suffocating.

Where was I?

Slowly, I started to recall everything, and dread settled in my stomach, prickling at every inch of my skin and sending cold goosebumps racing all over my body.

The club, Cassie, the Russian gangster, and something sharp being pushed into my neck.

I remembered it all.

But where was Sierra?

My heart rate picked up, and sweat broke across my forehead. Was she okay?

I needed to know.

“It seems like she’s up now.” I heard someone mumble. “The bitch has been out cold for nearly twelve fucking hours.”

I stilled, every muscle in my body tightening.

What was going on?

“Take the sack off her head!” A commanding voice ordered.

Immediately, what I assumed was a sack was yanked roughly off my head, making me scream.

The sudden change in lighting assaulted my eyes, making me wince as I squeezed them shut. The brightness that flashed into my vision sent a dull ache throbbing through my head.

“Open your fucking eyes.”

I flinched at the harshness of the voice, fear surging through my veins, but I didn’t have time to collect myself before a sharp sting struck my cheek, jerking my head to the side and knocking all the air from my lungs.

I couldn’t breathe.

The slap reverberated through my body, almost echoing as the sound rang in my ears.

What the hell was going on?

I slowly opened my eyes, glaring at the face my gaze landed on.

Aman stood in front of me.

Tattooed body, dangerous face, and a rolled-up cigarette tucked behind his ear… it was the same man I’d seen at the club.

“Soften those eyes now before I do that for you.” He ordered, the scowl on his face growing eyen darker.

I lowered my gaze to the floor, wary and scared.

My mind was a web of confusing thoughts. Why would Cassie lead us to him? Did she plan to get us kidnapped? Who was this man, and why did he seem to hate me already?

I had no answer to any of the questions I was throwing at myself.

“Keep that head up.”

I looked up, meeting his rage-filled eyes. They weren’t just dead and void of any emotion, they also looked oddly similar to what you could call a depth of nothingness.

I didn’t know who he was, but I could already tell he was deadly and that I should be scared of him.

I was scared of him.

“What’s going on in that little head of yours?” He whispered, a mocking tone lacing his voice.

I finally let my eyes travel around the room.

I was in a warehouse, a very old one, with spiderwebs hanging from the corners, dust coating almost every surface, and patches of what looked like red motor oil staining the floor.

The more I stared at it, the more it became increasingly clear that what I had assumed was motor oil might actually be blood.

Bile rose to my throat, and I looked up, my eyes traveling across the multiple men lining the room, guns strapped to their waistbands and similar frightening expressions plastered across their faces.

My lips trembled, my teeth gnashing against each other as a knot, deep and frightening, formed in my stomach and grew ten times tighter.

I was terrified.

“I asked you a question!” The gangster yelled, his words echoing throughout the warehouse.

I jumped in the chair, wincing at the impact on my ass as I landed back down on the metal chair with a hard thud.

“I…” I bit my lip and tried again. “I don’t know who you are or what you want from me.” I choked out.

The gangster laughed.

It was so loud and unsettling that I felt the urge to cover my ears with my hands. But, they were still tied so I couldn’t.

“You don’t know why you’re here?” He asked, making me look up at him.

odded timidly. “Yes… I don’t…”

The sound of approaching footsteps made me pause, my eyes darting toward the source to see who it was.

A man, taller than the gangster but just as scary as he was, came into view, more men trailing behind him.

His eyes were fixed on me, and the way he stared at me made the gangster’s glare feel almost doting.

He stopped right in front of me and cocked his head to the side. “So this is her?”

Gangster nodded. “She sure is.”

The man I was now going to refer to as the gangster’s boss, since he looked even more terrifying, scoffed. “Are you sure he would risk it all for her?”

The gangster snorted, eyeing me. “That’s what the girl said. Sure, she is pretty and might be a good fuck, but what else? You can always get another one.”

His words felt like another slap to my face.

My hands shook, nails digging into my palms even though my wrists were tied. I felt disrespected, humiliated, and utterly powerless.

Who were they talking about?

And why did they have to watch me like I was an animal on display?

“I… think you got the wrong person…” I said, my voice strained. “I don’t know anything about…”

“You’ll only speak when you’re spoken to!” The gangster’s boss cut me off. “And even that is up for debate.”

The gangster whistled and picked the cigarette from his ear. “You’re of no use to us. We only need you to lure in someone. Someone very dangerous.”

A sadistic smile played on his lips as he pulled a lighter from his pocket and lit the cigarette.

“Someone that’s like a shadow when he wants to be.” His jaw hardened. “And you better be of good use, or else I’ll kill you.”

I shivered, fear biting into my skin, the knot in my stomach so tight that I felt the air drying up in my / lungs.

“L…lure… Who…?”

The gangster’s boss rubbed his lip with his thumb and shared a look with Gangster. Then, in the most chilling, low voice, he muttered, “Alvise Valerio.”

HIS POV

ARVISE’S POV

“We lost her, sir.”

I rubbed a hand over my jaw and tilted my head to the side. “What did you just say?”

55 vouche

The short fool who had no business being on my security team because of how physically incapable he was lowered his head, his arms visibly shaking. The arms in question lacked any muscle or proof of work put into getting some.

One would think that where he lacked in physical strength, he would make up for it mentally, but that was definitely not the case.

He was useless, inside and out, and I had no time to waste on people like that.

In fact, I was already annoyed, and as he opened his mouth to spew whatever shit he’d thought of next from that empty head, I pulled my gun from my waistband, removed the safety, and put a bullet straight through his skull, blood splattering across the room.

His body fell limp to the floor, and I shifted my attention to the fool standing next to it.

His eyes were full of terror, his lips already trembling even though I’d not said a word.

I strapped the gun back into my holster, just to give him the illusion of safety. “Where is she?”

The bigger guy, Rafe, if I remembered correctly, and I always did, shook like a leaf. Though it was evident a leaf probably had more rhythm than he did in his steroid-induced body.

I zoned out for a moment, eyeing the blood splattered around, staining my walls and desk as I tapped my gun absentmindedly.

The cleaner had already been here ten times today, and now, I was about to make it the tenth. What could I do? The incompetent men who swore and bled their loyalty to nie had the audacity to let the one person I almost gave a fuck about out of their sight.

I hated incompetence.

It wasn’t just a mere dislike or a casual distaste. I just fucking hated it.

Though, I was aware that it was certainly a cover-up for what I truly hated.

People.

People were undependable, incompetent, and fucking cunning. I’d spent years of my life discovering that, and at some point, I just wanted nothing to do with them. But that was impossible, considering the fact that they were everywhere. Every single damn second.

I learned to tolerate them, more or less when it suited me, and over time, I managed to hide that hatred well, or so I thought.

My life growing up in Russia was nothing short of a horror movie, but of course, I was the villain in it.

tated just by the thought alone, I dragged my eyes back to the steroid king still stuttering and barely getting a sentence out.

“Do you think this is a joke?”

He tensed, shaking his head. “No, sir, I don’t…”

“Good. If I wanted to watch a clown, I know where to find them. Right?”

He nodded frantically. “Yes, sir.”

I eyed my glass of vodka, making sure there was no blood in it before I gulped it down. “Now tell me, where is she?”

The steroid king took his time before finally forcing the words out. “I… don’t know, sir. We…” He cleared his throat. “We followed her to the club…”

“She went to a club?” I was suddenly more irritated than I had been a few seconds ago, and that meant my hands itched to reach for my gun again, but I was never one to act on impulse. Most times.

The little daredevil who had looked so broken the last time I saw her was already going to clubs?

I didn’t like it.

“Yes, sir, she did.” The steroid king confirmed. “She was with her friend, and in order not to be noticed, we waited outside, but after some hours, there was no sign of her. And when we went into the club to check… she was no longer there.”

Every muscle in my body tightened, my blood boiling so furiously in my veins that I wondered how it hadn’t dried up.

I don’t play with her. I might hate her fucking guts, but her life was one thing I would never gamble with.

She couldn’t fucking die, not as long as I was still alive. Never.

“You waited for hours,” I scoffed, stroking my chin, darkly amused by the audacity. “Before you went to check on her?”

His eyes almost bulged out of their sockets, and he fell to his knees. “I’m sorry, Pakhan, I swear I…”

I pulled out my gun once again and emptied the bullets into him before shooting to my feet.

“Pakhan…” Andrei, my right-hand man, walked towards me.

He’d been standing in the corner all this while, watching the scene unfold. He wasn’t supposed to interfere until he realized there was a need for him to, and right now, he probably thought there was.

“They would have helped in tracing her,” Andrei said, following behind me as I walked to the door.

I scoffed. “Bullshit. My dead dog is smarter than those fools.”

“I know, but…”

“They fucking left London and got on my private jet for hours! Hours!” I turned back, raging furiously. “And not once did they think to call me and inform me that she was missing until they landed here.” I grit

teeth, the thought alone making me want to kill them all over again. “Do you know how many hours have been wasted? She could be fucking…”

I didn’t let myself say it.

I couldn’t.

“They deserved to die,” Andrei said. “I just thought we could have used them as bait to get to her, then killed them. Preferably tortured them to their deaths.”

“That would have been more fitting, but I don’t have time for that,” I said, walking through the large halls with Andrei trailing behind me.

“Should I get the army ready and send them there?”

I paused and turned around, raising my brows. “An army?” I didn’t trust anyone with her. “Call them, but I’m going with them.”

Andrei looked like he’d seen a ghost. “But won’t that stir up trouble… the wedding is coming…”

I turned on my heel and continued walking, reaching the flight of stairs and walking down them. “I don’t care what needs to be put on hold here. Nothing moves until I’ve found her,” I said with finality.

I wasn’t a man who felt, but in this moment, I almost did. Almost felt something akin to worry.

Her pain-stricken green eyes flashed in my memory as I walked out the front door with Andrei and watched him order my men to assemble.

My mind drifted to her parting words to me and a muscle ticked in my jaw. She looked me in the face and fucking told me goodbye.

I scoffed.

Goodbye my fucking foot.
