ARABELLA’S POV
What was wrong with these people? There had to be something wrong with them.
I just knew it.

Why did they speak of Alvise like he was some sort of serial killer who had ears everywhere and could suddenly just burst in now?
The way Gangster’s boss had said his name still sent chills down my spine.”
“I think… you’re mistaking both of us for other people?” I offered, trying to get them to see how wrong they were. “I’m… just a normal fashion editor, and the man you just called us a businessman.” I cleared my throat cautiously. “The description you’ve given doesn’t match him…”
“Just shut up.” Gangster said, turning around and walking to the only window in the warehouse.
No wonder the place reeked.
Gangster’s boss was next to speak as he crouched down in front of me. “You’re the one who’s clueless, yet you sound like you’re trying to explain the situation to us?”
I sucked in a breath as his hands trailed down my face, stopping at my chin and rubbing the skin there
with his thumb.
I felt disgusted. So disgusted I couldn’t hold it in and gagged.
Gangster’s boss didn’t like that one bit. His eyes flickered with restrained anger. “Do you think you have a choice being here?”
I shook my head and lowered my gaze to the floor, but that didn’t seem to appease him.
“Dimitri!” He yelled. “Get me the fucking ice bucket.”
My blood felt like it had dried in my veins, my heart beating tirelessly. “No…” I pleaded. “Please, don’t do this to me… I’m sorry. I beg you!”
His eyes were now bloodshot, void of even a speck of emotion, not even anger visible.
Dread, heavy, threatening, and horrible, settled in my stomach, and I feared for what was to come. I was finished. My life was over.
They ignored my cries and pleas, and when the young, fall man I assumed to be Dimitri brought the ice bucket, Gangster’s boss didn’t waste any time before forcing my head down and pouring it all over me.
I shivered, my whole body shaking tremendously from the impact, jolts of cold and reckless spasms wrecking every inch of my body.
“You want to act like a cold bitch?” He barked, laughing hysterically. “Well, I just made you a proper one.”
He grabbed my shoulders and shook me violently. “Come on! Let me see you gag now!” He yelled. “Let

vision turned blurry. Whether it was from the ice water, the screaming, or the way he shook me rigorously, I had no idea.
I just wanted him to stop. I wanted this to stop.
“Come on! Let’s start torturing her so we can send him photos.” He muttered to Gangster. “That will be the only way we can know if she’s of any use to us.”
“And if she isn’t?” Gangster asked, his voice dropping with excitement like it was something he was looking forward to.
“Kill her.”
My body shook so much I almost fell to the ground with the chair until Gangster staggered forward and held the chair in place. “Stay still!” He yelled. “If you fall, I’m going to leave you on the cold floor with the ice, and you’ll know just how easy we’re going on you.”
My lips were trembling at the same time my hands were. I clasped my hands together behind me, the rope around my wrists making it hard to do so, but I tried, and then I managed to mutter, “My friend… where is she?”
Gangster’s boss, who’d been typing something on his phone, paused and glanced at me. “You’re asking for your friend?” He snorted. “That should be the least of your problems. You don’t even know if you’re going to survive.”
“I don’t think she will,” Gangster chimed in, giving his head a light shake. “If she was important to him like that girl said, he should have been here by now. We’ve had her for over fourteen hours.”
I sighed.
They were wasting their time. They had me and Alvise mixed up with other people, and now they were waiting for him to show up. He was never going to show up.
He wasn’t the scary man or shadow they spoke of, and I definitely wasn’t the girl they could use to lure him.
I would have laughed at the confusion on a good day, but this was dangerous and life-threatening. I was not only scared for my life, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Sierra. How was she doing, and why didn’t they put us here together?
As stupid as it may sound, I had a rough year and had been abducted a few times, even though it was just briefly, so it wasn’t a completely new experience for me as it would be for Sierra, and that rubbed me the
wrong way.
“He’s… not…” My voice shook from the cold. “Going… to come,” I whispered weakly. “You’re mistaken.”
Gangster raised his hand to hit me in the face, and I braced myself, ready for the impact, but approaching, hurried footsteps stopped him and made him turn around.
“And why do you fools look like you’ve seen a ghost?” He asked the men who had rushed in and really did look like they had seen something unusual.

“I… think…” One of them trailed off, scratching the back of his head so hard I was sure he bruised it.
you don’t want me to put a bullet through your head, you will open your mouth and fucking speak!” Gangster’s boss ordered, making me flinch and press impossibly deeper into the chair.
One of them was pushed forward by the others. “Speak,” they commanded.
The now nervous man took a deep breath before mumbling, “He… he’s here.”
My brows shot up, fear and confusion settling in my head. Was the shadow guy already here? My stomach tightened. What would be done when he found out they’d baited him with the wrong girl?
A stifling shiver shot through me. He would kill me.
“Are you dumb?” Gangster was literally shaking. “And you’re just saying it…”
“Draw out your fucking guns and take position!” Gangster’s boss cut in, pulling his gun from his waistband and barking orders in Russian.
I sat frozen in shock, and then it all went still. Silence took over the room, not even the sound of a human breath being heard, but a part of me knew it was the calm before the storm.
Bang!
A loud, ear-wrenching sound cut through the air, filling the place with so much smoke that I started choking on the unclean air.
The next thing that followed were gunshots. Fast, loud, and merciless. I didn’t have time to think. I couldn’t move. I just hitched my breath and closed my eyes, unable to breathe or see a thing.
I felt movement around me and shot my eyes open, and that’s when my shock intensified. Forming a circle around me were men dressed in black suits.
I frowned. The only men I knew who dressed in such suits were…
My eyes darted to the entrance, and everything stilled, all the air drying from my lungs and the blood draining from my veins.
He stood there, an army of men behind him, tall and commanding the room as he walked in, with blue eyes that pulled my soul in as he fixed all his attention on me, like he’d known exactly where to find me and had sought me out.
Alvise.

A little gasp escaped my lips, and my mouth hung open, the sight of him feeling completely unreal like my imagination had plastered his face onto someone else just to torment me.
As he walked in my direction, his face was so stoic and cold, even more so than it normally was, and I concluded I was seeing things.
The cold water must have messed with something in my head.
With each step he took, my heart beat faster and faster, almost jumping out of my chest.
He stopped right in front of me, his eyes searching my face and his jaw so hard, I could see the muscles twitching beneath the skin. Something woody and fresh wafted into my nose, and my eyes widened.
It was his scent. I could recognize it from anywhere. I wasn’t hallucinating.
This was Alvise.
But how? What was he doing here?
Gangster and his boss were mistaken. I knew it, so why had they lured Alvise here? Did they somehow force him to come?
Alvise’s eyes narrowed, and he rubbed his chin absentmindedly. “Who did this to you?” he asked, his voice hard and harsh, the coldness so prominent it made the entire room go still.
I didn’t open my mouth. I couldn’t. I was still too stunned to see him. Nothing made sense.
“Arabella.” His voice carried a warning edge, anger almost seeping through it as his impatience became more evident.
He was upset.
But what I didn’t understand was why. Alvise had never been one to let his anger show unless he was already on the edge, so what was going on now? Why did he look ready to kill?
“W…what?” I whispered, my own voice sounding foreign to my ears.
Alvise dragged his gaze down my body, and before I could fully process what he was doing, he leaned forward and trailed his fingers over my arm.
I’d already been shivering before, but with his touch against my skin, it only got worse, the familiar contact sending shivers racing down my spine.
His touch was gone as quickly as it came, and he withdrew his hand, taking a step back. “The water is cold.” He observed, “was it ice?”
I nodded, unable to speak. Alvise looked around the warehouse, his eyes searching every corner. I wanted to do the same, but I couldn’t because my view was blocked by his men, who had formed a circle around

whole body shook, the cold suddenly becoming overwhelming. I didn’t want to speak or do anything else, but the look in his eyes and the tension radiating off him made it impossible for me to stay silent.
“I… don’t know… his name.” I said. There were several men around the warehouse from what I could see with my limited vision.
“Can you identify him when you see him?”
I nodded, and then he beckoned to someone on the other side of the room.
I wasn’t prepared for the scene that unfolded in front of me. What first reached my ears were muffled noises, and then they grew louder and more prominent.
Just as I was trying to guess who had been tied up, Alvise’s men pushed two people to the ground in from of me.
My breath caught in my throat as Gangster and his boss rolled across the floor, groaning helplessly while some of the guards kicked them from every direction.
Gone were the men who had threatened to kill me, and now all they could do was beg for their lives.
Why were they so scared? Alvise wasn’t going to kill them. He would probably just call the police… Right?
“Which one of them?” Alvise thundered impatiently.
“The taller one.” I muttered, my eyes almost bulging out of their sockets as I watched the men struggle on the floor.
“Take them up.” Alvise ordered, and his men immediately obliged, yanking Gangster and his boss upright like they were nothing more than sacks of potatoes.
The moment they straightened and stood at their full height, revealing who was taller, the sound of a gunshot tore through the air.
I closed my eyes, trembling as the deafening sound sent another surge of fear through me, instantly reminding me of the shots from minutes ago.
Liquid splattered across my face, then my arm, and finally my shoulders. I snapped my eyes open, my heart missing its next beat as I looked down at myself.
Blood.
There was blood.
So much blood.
I snapped my head up, and a choked scream escaped my mouth at the sight of Gangster’s boss lying lifeless on the floor in a pool of his own blood, bullets having torn through most parts of his body.
Hesitantly, I let my eyes travel to Alvise, hoping desperately that he wasn’t the one who had pulled the trigger.

vise held the gun.
He had pulled the trigger. He had shot someone.
“Alvise…” I whispered, shivering violently. “What… did you do?”

His eyes were dead, not a flicker of emotion passing through them. “Untie her and take her away.” He said to someone behind me.
No.
He still hadn’t answered my question.
Large hands worked on the ropes around my wrists, my hands still trapped behind me, and I helplessly stayed strapped to the chair, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
“Did… you just kill him?”
Alvise didn’t spare me a glance. He started speaking in Russian, and whatever he told them made the person untying me work the ropes ten times faster.
He was trying to send me away.
It all came crashing down on me at once. So this was real. I really had just watched Alvise kill a man.
The blood coating my skin was the evidence. It had actually happened.
I winced a little when the ropes around my legs were untied, and then, with my hands finally freed, I absentmindedly rubbed my aching wrists together to soothe the pain.
I didn’t get time to do the same for my legs because the guard beside me picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, knocking the breath out of me.
“Alvise, what’s going on?” I choked, desperate to get an answer so I knew I wasn’t going crazy.
He avoided eye contact until the guard and I reached the exit, about to walk out of sight. His eyes finally clashed with mine for a brief second before he looked away at the exact moment the guard stepped through the door.
The moment we disappeared from sight, more gunshots crupted behind us.
This time, they didn’t stop until all I could hear were screams.
