My eyes widened, and I couldn’t do anything but stare at him, a weird feeling fluttering in my stomach and making me gasp.
What was he doing?
I wanted to take up his dare and call him Mr. Valerio, but something held my tongue. Perhaps it was the new fear I’d developed… fear of who he really was.
“Alvise…”
“So you do know my name,” he hissed, raising his brows.
I don’t know where the confidence surged from, perhaps it was the adrenaline from witnessing the shooting and being carried here, but I snapped, “Mr. Valerio is also your name…”
“You don’t call me that.” He warned sternly.
“I call you that at work,” I shot back, matching his harsh tone.
The corner of his lips lifted, and he rasped, “We’re not at work now, are we?”
And then the haze I’d been trapped in disappeared. He was right. We weren’t at work, and I’d just witnessed a crime… and he was the criminal.
I was on the criminal’s lap, straddling him. Why wasn’t I scared?
Alvise raised a hand from my waist and brought his fingers to my face. I flinched, jumping a little the moment his fingers made contact with my skin.
His eyes flashed, the depths of blue turning darker. “Are you afraid of me?” he questioned, with so much venom and disbelief in his voice that I looked away.
Was I afraid of him?
I had no idea. I couldn’t process anything and was still stuck on the body I’d seen. The blood of Gangster’s boss was dried on my face and body, still visible if I looked down, though I intentionally refused to do so.
My shirt clung to my skin from the cold water that had soaked me from the ice, and I had nearly shivered to death. Yet with his body pressing against mine, there was warmth coating my skin.
My body didn’t fear him, but my mind did, and I now realized I was afraid of what he could do, but not of him, and it made me question my own sanity.
Alvise watched me, waiting for a reply, his hand on my waist suddenly feeling like it burned as his grip tightened.
“I don’t know.” I said hesitantly, unable to hide the uncertainty in my voice.
His eyes narrowed, and it got increasingly harder to control the rushing thoughts in my head and stop

them from showing in my body language.
gaze dropped to his hand on my waist, and my breath hitched. We were close, so close that I could smell him… every note of his addictive scent.
I let my eyes wander all over his body. His suit jacket was gone, and the sleeves of his shirt were now rolled up to his elbows.
There wasn’t a single stain on his body. Not even a speck of blood that could give away a glimpse of what he’d been up to.
Slowly, I let my eyes trail back up to him, and this time, I couldn’t control the way my body reacted to the hard look on his face. I flinched again.
Alvise cussed under his breath and placed his free hand on the other side of my waist, using it to set me back on the car seat.
I breathed out in relief at the loss of contact, and he seemed to hear it because he froze. And like that single act had thrown him off the edge, he hissed, “I would never harm you, Arabella.”
I remembered him saying those exact words to me, and yes, I knew it was true. “At least not physically, no. I said, finally voicing what I couldn’t the last time he’d said it.
“What’s with the attitude?”
Done with holding back, I looked at him. “You killed a man, Alvise.” I snapped. “Right in front of me!”
“That man was going to kill you.” He said calmly, not looking nearly as bothered as I was as he leaned against the seat and stroked his chin. “I’m sure you know that.”
“You could have called the police!” I yelled. “Or left it to your security men… they work for the law… right?”
“They don’t.”
I gasped. “And so who are they?”
“These questions are unnecessary.” He said, unclasping his wristwatch and picking up another one from the center console.
“They are not.” I said, surprised by his nonchalance. “I never thought you were a… criminal.”
He glanced at me briefly before lowering his eyes back to his wrist as he clasped on the new wristwatch and threw the old one into the center console. “That’s an interesting label.
“Alvise!” I yelled, triggered by his apathy. “Why did you have a gun?… Please tell me this is the first time you’ve killed a man,” I begged, holding on to the hope for my own sanity.
“It isn’t the first.” Alvise scraped his tongue over his teeth. “And it definitely won’t be the last, Arabella.”
I covered my mouth to hold in the bile that rose up to my throat and scooted closer to the door, eager to put as much distance between us as possible.
I wasn’t okay with this. Not one bit.

A man who killed people and had no sympathy about it was a monster. When I fell for him years ago. I didn’t fall for a monster.
Whoever this was, it wasn’t Alvise. It wasn’t the Alvise I knew, and if this was the life he wanted to live… who he was, it just proved I never knew him at all.
And that was fine. Now, I wanted nothing to do with him.
I reached for the door handle frantically, but he läshed his hand forward and pulled my hand back, his body leaning over mine.
“You’re not going anywhere, Arabella.” He said, his grip on my hand rock-hard.
“Then what do you want me to do!” I screamed, breaking down. “I don’t know who you are.. what this is f don’t know you!”
The tears I’d been holding gathered in my eyes and slipped out instantly, leaving me sniffing and sobbing uncontrollably.
Something passed in Alvise’s eyes, and he released his grip on my hand and leaned away, his jaw tight. “What do you want to know? I’ll allow you to ask just one question now.”
My heart beat erratically, and I rubbed my sweaty palms together. I didn’t want to be here with him or speak to him, but I was desperate to know something… anything about him. Who he really was.
“Who are you?” I whispered, my chest tightening.
Alyise’s eyes clashed with mine, locking me in his intense stare. “Head of the Bratva.” He rolled down his sleeves and adjusted his cufflinks. “The Pakhan.”
