Answer To No One

ARABELLA’S POV

Did he just mention the… Bratva?

I wanted him to burst out laughing and say he was just exaggerating, Lwaited patiently, seconds passing by. but that never happened.

I might not have understood anything else, but I was kind of familiar with the Russian Bratva. I’d heard Sierra talk about it so many times, and I’d heard rumors about the underworld and some sort of criminal secret society in Russia… but I just never expected Alvise to be one of them.

Not just one of them… he was the head. It just kept getting worse.

“Are you joking?” I asked, surprised. “Please tell me you’re joking\”

Alvise shot me a blank look. “I’m joking.”

I blinked. “Really?”

“Isn’t that what you wanted to hear?” He scoffed and pulled out his phone from his pocket. “I gave you what you wanted.”

I rubbed my tense palms together and leaned back in the seat, wishing there was a way I could suddenly disappear off the surface of the earth, never to return again.

My life seemed to be unraveling each day, getting worse and worse until I didn’t want to live it anymore.

I’d panicked, cried, and screamed so much that I no longer had any of that to give. All I could do was sit still and whisper, hoping he heard me. “Does my brother know?”

From his tense body language, I suspected he wanted to skip the question and not reply.

I was proven right seconds later. “I only allowed you one question, Arabella. You’ve exhausted the chance.”

“The least you can do is answer my questions.” I argued softly, “I don’t know what’s going on and I can’t understand… You… you’re not who I thought you were. I need some sort of explanation.”

“I’m not who you thought I was?” He questioned curiously. “And what’s that supposed to mean? Who did you think I was?”

The question felt like a slap in the face and a successful attempt to kick me while I was already down.

I really had no clue who I thought he was. Or at least that’s what I was telling myself. Deep down, I knew I just couldn’t say it out loud, in fear he would see right through my walls and know that I’d been so obsessed with him, he’d blocked my common sense.

How had I missed this?

I kept asking myself that question, searching my brain to see if there were signs I’d missed.

My chest tightened at a particular memory. “Alvise?” I called weakly. “On the day of Archie’s birthday,

when you went outside to speak with Theo… what did you do to him?”

ouldn’t get the image of blood on Alvise’s knuckles out of my head. Or the way Theo was missing a leg when he tried to kill me. The two incidents had to be connected somehow.

When I didn’t get a reply, I let my eyes wander to him. He was staring out the window, his jaw’ tight.

“I’m waiting.”

“You don’t need to bother yourself with what I did to him…”

“I’m going to need you to stop saying that.” I interrupted, annoyed. “Let me be the one to decide what want to bother myself with.”

Alvise flicked his gaze to me, and I held it, refusing to cower. “I saw the blood on your knuckles that night and assumed you two just got into a fist fight of some sort, but then the last time I saw him, he was barely Alvise. Why?”

Alvise tapped a finger against his leg before speaking, his voice instantly commanding authority. “I do whatever I want and don’t have to answer to anyone. Don’t mistake the fact that I was lenient enough to answer some of your questions for me eagerly doing whatever you want.” He warned firmly. “I don’t owe you anything.”

I looked away, getting his message clearly. Maybe he was right. What was I thinking? That the head of the Bratva owed me any explanation? Surely not.

He was trying to assert his dominance over me and tell me he was too powerful to care about my silly questions.

“I’m sorry for bothering you with my unnecessary questions.” I said bitterly. “It won’t happen again, Pakhan.”

“Don’t call me that.” He hissed.

I ignored him and stared out my window. When I’d had enough of the sight of the wild trees and dry land, I reached for the door handle again and successfully opened it.

“Where are you going?”

I didn’t acknowledge Alvise or his question and jumped out of the SUV, but I barely made it two steps before two guards stepped in front of me and blocked my way.

I frowned. “What’s the problem?”

“You can’t go inside, madam.” One of them said, looking behind me.

I followed his line of sight to see Alvise leave the SUV before taking his time to approach us.

“Don’t ever leave when I’m still speaking to you, Arabella.” He ordered, stepping beside me.

I held my retort at the tip of my tongue and focused on the important task at hand… finding Sierra.

“Can I just please know where my friend is? I don’t even know if she’s fine…” I inquired, worried.

“She’s alive.” Alvise said nonchalantly.

Writted my teeth at his awful apathy and locked my fingers together. “Okay, please take me to her so we

can leave.”

Alvise visibly stilled, the muscles in his body seemingly tightening. He barked at the guards in front of us and nodded toward the back of the SUV. “Leave.”

They were gone as fast as they came, heeding Alvise’s order immediately.

Thankful for the freedom their absence provided, I attempted to head for the warehouse again, but Alvise stepped in front of me, causing me to bump into his chest.

I stepped back, holding my forehead to soothe the impact as a painful gasp escaped my lips. “What was that for?”

“You’re not going in. I’ll have someone bring your friend out.” Alvise said with finality, his eyes searching my face. “But you’re not leaving.”
