A Real Kiss
ARABELLA’S POV
My eyes widened, and goosebumps rose all over my skin. What was I doing?
How had I missed his ear and somehow ended up pressing my lips against his mouth?
I should move away.

I shouldn’t wait another second, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. Alvise didn’t move either, but he didn’t touch me, and that left me standing awkwardly with my lips still pressed against his.
Memories of Tatiana’s ring and their upcoming wedding snapped me out of my haze, and I pulled back removing my lips from his and attempting to turn around.
This wasn’t right.
His hands suddenly wrapped around my waist, almost rocking a scream out of me.
What was going on?
My body melted against his while my mind was doing the complete opposite. Alvise pulled me closer until all I could smell was him, and the blue of his eyes seemed to dig straight into my soul.
I opened my mouth, about to ask what we were doing, but I didn’t get the chance because his lips came down on mine, knocking the words right out of my mouth.
I hummed as he pressed me impossibly closer and kissed me slowly, nipping at my bottom lip and drawing faint circles against my waist.
It felt like I was going crazy.
I let my fingers wander into his thick strands and played with his hair, and then I kissed him back, finally matching his rhythm.
The kiss was completely different from the last one, where he hadn’t moved beyond my lips. Alvise didn’t hold back this time.
He slipped his tongue into my mouth and let it tangle with mine, moving in rhythm with our mouths until I had to pull back to breathe.
I was a panting mess, my head still fogged with shock, feeling like I was trapped in some sort of dream. I only got to breathe for a few seconds before Alvise caught my bottom lip between his teeth and sucked gently.
A moan escaped me as heat gathered in my core, and I pressed my lips together, suddenly aware of how affected I was by him.
Alvise pulled back seconds later, searching my face with his intense eyes. Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I looked away, embarrassed and confused.
What had just happened? I couldn’t believe we’d just kissed… What was I thinking?

I shook my head and buried my face in his neck to hide the embarrassment spreading across my face as reality finally set in.
I should never have left the room to seek him out. I had only wanted to mess with him a little because I’d spent the past few days surprisingly craving his presence, even though I’d sworn to stay away.
Why was it so hard?
Alvise’s hold on my waist disappeared, leaving me as the only one still holding onto him, so I straightened and snatched my hand from his hair.
“I…” My mouth clamped shut, and I refused to finish the sentence because I knew I had nothing to say.
He said nothing either, and I heard ice clicking against glass again, his cufflinks glinting faintly as he brought the glass to his lips.
“I should probably go,” I breathed, taking a step back.
I felt awful. I always did after having any sort of physical interaction with him because he was always cold afterward, like he couldn’t stand my touch or my presence.
“You should,” Alvise said, his voice cold and hard around the edges.
A sharp pain seared through my heart. Of course, I knew he was going to be cold, as always.
I just didn’t expect him to outright tell me off like that.
“You sure do know how to make me feel awful,” I whispered.
“Get over it.”
My breath caught in my throat, and I glared at him even though I couldn’t see him clearly. He wasn’t looking at me, so the color of his eyes remained hidden in the darkness.
Why did he always have to be so confusing?
I huffed.
Matter of fact, I didn’t care to know anymore.
“I will, and I have,” I said, taking another cautious step back to make sure I didn’t fall. “I don’t know what 1 was thinking.”
Alvise didn’t respond, and I turned around, using my legs and hands as a map to guide me away so I didn’t end up bumping into anything.
That didn’t go so well because I bumped into a wall and went tumbling backward until I landed on my ass on the floor.
I winced, but it was more from embarrassment than pain, and I just sat there on the floor, wondering how I’d ended up in such a ridiculous situation.
Like, how stupid was it to fall down right after kissing a man who made you feel like shit every time?

It wasn’t just stupid. It made me want to disappear into a hole underground.
problem was, there was no hole, and this was reality.
I had to face it.
“Are you okay?” Alvise asked, almost hesitantly.
“I’ve been better,” I snorted, rising to my feet.
“Why did you come here?”
I raised my brows and held back the retort on the tip of my tongue.
So he only cared to ask me why I’d left the room to meet him?

“I was thirsty and needed something to drink,” I lied, continuing on my way out of the living room with small, careful steps.
“Arabella?”
I rolled my eyes and paused. “What?”
“If you were parched, why haven’t you taken anything to drink?” Alvise asked, his voice laced with something I couldn’t quite place.
There was a strong taste lingering on the tip of my tongue, and I immediately knew it was from our kiss. Heat rose to my cheeks and I rubbed my hand on my face to send it away.
“I don’t feel like it anymore,” I said, about to continue walking away when he stopped me again.
“Never come seek me out in the dark, Arabella,” he warned.
The way he said it, his tone authoritative and filled with finality, made me pissed, and I couldn’t hold it in.
“I didn’t come to seek you out, so don’t get ahead of yourself. I just… wanted a stroll.”
Alvise released an amused breath, making me turn around.
His eyes were on me as he spoke.
“Call it whatever you want, but next time, don’t,” his eyes darkened, “because I might not be able to stop myself then.”
