ARABELLA’S POV

Blue eyes glared at me, his hold on my neck tightening and relaxing at intervals.

I couldn’t speak.

Not because of his hand around my neck, but because I could see that he was a second away/from completely losing his cool.

Alvise let his touch linger for a second longer before he slowly released me and stepped back, his eyes straying away from mine.

I released a breath of relief and finally relaxed against the couch, but I couldn’t get his words out of my head. He had just threatened to kill me if I ever revealed his identity to anyone, and while I hadn’t been planning to do that before, the fact that he had said it to me made me feel… dispensable.

Like he was trying to tell me just how quickly he could get rid of me if he wanted to. How easily he could make me disappear.

I hated it.

His warm gaze heated my face, but I didn’t let my eyes travel toward him. I stood up and turned on my heel, heading for the bedroom.

“I’ll be out all night. Lock the door,” Alvise said coldly.

I paused, not turning back. “Okay.”

And then I walked away, leaving him standing alone.

He wasn’t lying when he said he’d be out all night. In fact, he also didn’t return the night after that, or the

next.

I was left in the apartment with Sierra and some of his men stationed outside, and for the first time since I found out about his true identity, I allowed myself to admit that I missed his presence a little bit.

And it bothered me more than I would like to admit.

It was a few minutes after midnight when I heard the front door open and close.

Was it Alvise?

My stomach tightened, and heat prickled across my skin as I rubbed my palms together.

It had to be him. No one else had entered the apartment since he was away, and I only knew they were guards outside because they would knock for me to open the door and hand me takeout or groceries.

My gaze flicked to Sierra, sleeping peacefully next to me, and I sighed. She’d been noticeably happy that Alvise hadn’t shown up since she left, and now that he was back, I wondered how she would react if they

ever ran into each other.

pulled the covers off my body and fixed my eyes on my hands as I played with the hem of my pajama top

Should I go see if he’s really the one?

My legs moved before I could come to a decision, and I walked out of the room, almost tiptoeing into the living room.

It was dark, almost pitch-black if not for the faint ray of light spilling into the living room from the hallway.

I squinted my eyes and looked around, but there was no sign of Alvise. Or rather, there was no sign of anything because I wasn’t capable of functioning in fucking darkness.

“If you didn’t give anything away before, your love for darkness should have been the first hint,” I muttered cautiously, taking another step into the darkness.

I heard ice clinking against glass and turned in the direction of the minibar. A prickling sensation crawled across my skin, and I immediately knew his eyes were on me.

I wasn’t surprised he knew where I was standing or how he could see in the dark. The man basically lived in darkness when he wanted to, and I wasn’t foolish enough to think he had any problem moving through it.

“What are you doing?” I quietly asked, my voice weak and betraying my fraying nerves.

Alvise didn’t respond, and it only made me more determined to seek him out. Taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling, I took careful steps in the direction of the chair, using the faint clinking of ice against glass

as my map.

It went well until I bumped into a stool, and pain shot through my toe.

“Ouch!” I hissed, crouching down to soothe it.

My head bumped against the stool in the process, and I couldn’t hold back the sharp inhale that escaped

“What the hell?” I mumbled under my breath, now soothing both my temple and my throbbing toe.

“Stop fucking moving.”

I froze as the familiar, deep, cold voice cut through the room, raising goosebumps across my skin.

I relaxed a little now that it was fully confirmed that it was truly him.

I stood to my full height. “Well, that’s hard to do considering the fact that you’re sitting in the dark.”

“That has nothing to do with you.”

I bit my lip and scrunched my face up. Was he really just clueless, or did he like to act oblivious?

“It does when I’m trying to figure out where you are,” I mused. “And I wonder why you wouldn’t just turn

on the lights.”

is reply came as a warning. “Go back to bed, Arabella.”

His voice was closer now, so I took another careful step forward, hoping I didn’t bump into anything else. Using his scent as another guide, I scooted closer until I could finally see his cufflinks glinting faintly in the darkness.

I sighed in relief and, without thinking, reached my hand forward and traced his cufflinks, marveling at how the diamonds shone so brightly even in the dark.

Alvise tensed beneath my touch, and it gave me more confidence to move closer until his shoulder brushed against mine.

I shivered, trapping my bottom lip between my teeth. I could tell he was sitting down, but that was all I could make out. What he was drinking remained a mystery, and I suddenly wanted to taste it.

Instead of asking him, I let my hand travel from his cufflinks to his palm. The glass wasn’t there, so I reached for his other hand.

My breathing turned ragged when I leaned forward and finally felt the glass in his hand, but he didn’t let me take it.

“I asked you to go to bed, didn’t I?” he breathed, his voice tired around the edges but cold and clipped all the same.

“I didn’t listen,” I breathed, leaning down to whisper in his ear, but freezing when my lips pressed against something.

It was his lips.
