Kill For Me?

ANABELLA’S POV

My face fell.

I grabbed the front of my shirt and fisted the fabric, trying to see if it would help with the knot tightening in my lungs because I couldn’t breathe.

“Y…you did what?”

His eyes narrowed, and he leaned back against the couch, resting one hand over the top. You heard exactly what I said.”

This had to be some sort of prank. I wanted to believe it was, but Alvise had already proved many times that he didn’t joke. It was real.

He really killed Henry.

I shot to my feet, ignoring the weakness spreading through my legs. “Why would you kill him?” I choked, the air almost vanishing from my lungs.

I was disappointed and shocked, but most of all, I felt guilty.

So, Theo had never lied when he said I led Henry to his death…

It was all true.

Him coming to Archie’s apartment and trying to kill me again at work finally made sense. My eyes darted to my hands, and a sob escaped my lips.

“I was really a murderer…” I whispered, my voice breaking. “The news article about me was real. I led both of them to their deaths.”

“You’re going to have a panic attack if you keep shaking like that,” Alvise said calmly.

“I asked you a question!” I snapped. “Why would you kill someone who did nothing to you?”

He rubbed a hand over his chin and shook his head once, his eyes narrowing. “That tone again. Fix it.”

“You think I care about what tone I speak to you in right now?” I said in disbelief. “You killed my… friend.” I breathed, rubbing my temples and sinking back onto the couch as my legs threatened to give way beneath

“Your friend?” Alvise scoffed, like he was almost amused by the term. “You have no idea what you’re talking

about.”

I frowned, sniffing as I tried to hold myself together. “I was the one who knew him…”

“You didn’t know shit about him, so shut the fuck up,” Alvise ordered, standing up.

I furrowed my brows as I looked up at him and genuinely lost it, unable to hold back all the anger surging through me.

“The fact that you’re some sort of mob king doesn’t give you the right to just kill anyone in my life,” I whispered aggressively. “You were there when I broke down and almost went crazy after he died, but you ver said anything! You just watched me almost drown in pain when you were the cause of my pain!”

“I was the cause of your pain?” Alvise asked in disbelief. “You have no idea what I saved you from. And let me tell you once again, Arabella, there are certain things I won’t tolerate. I don’t care if you’re in your feelings.” His eyes flashed. “Behave.”

“What have you saved me from?” I demanded. “Come on, tell me. You say that, but all you did was cause me pain.”

He was eerily calm.

Too calm. And that was the problem.

I couldn’t fathom the fact that he was making me go completely insane while he stood there composed, like we were having a casual conversation about the weather instead of discussing the deaths of people I had cared about.

“I saved you from him,” Alvise said with a shrug. “And that’s all I’m going to say.”

I shook my head, my whole body trembling. “Don’t say that… just don’t, because when you do, you put the weight of his death on my shoulders. You don’t get to kill someone and then say you did it for me.”

“Oh, but I have, and it’s the truth.”

Sick to my stomach, I dared to ask the disturbing question.

“Who else have you killed, hmm?” I asked sarcastically. “Come on, tell me. I’m listening.”

Alvise approached me, stepping right into my personal space. “The guy who abducted you in his car,” he said, making me flinch.

My brows drew together.

He was talking about Jude. The guy who had faked being an intern at the company and abducted me in his car. It had been months ago, and I’d almost forgotten about him.

My heartbeat picked up as I recalled his car crashing and the gunshot I’d heard, blood splattering across my face. I’d been certain of what I heard, but since no police officer had tried to speak to me, I’d assumed I’d hallucinated it all.

But now, it was clear I hadn’t. I felt deceived and betrayed.

“So you were there all along?” My gaze dropped to the floor. “You fired that gunshot, didn’t you? How did you know he was going to kidnap me…?”

“I’m not answering any of that,” Alvise cut in. “I’ll only answer what I want to.”

I had a feeling there was more, but he just wasn’t interested in sharing any of it with me.

“Why are you doing this to me? Why can’t you just answer my questions?”

Alvise poked his tongue against the inside of his cheek. “You’re not ready to hear the answers.”

“But I am,” I insisted.

You’re not. You’re crying for people who would have killed you in a heartbeat.” He let out a breath that sounded almost amused, but his eyes didn’t carry any of it.

He looked upset, so I looked away and sighed.

What did he mean by that?

Was he trying to say that Henry wanted to kill me? Henry?

It sounded unbelievable.

After all the effort he had put into trying to date me, why would he want to kill me?

I desperately needed Alvise to say something… anything. Or at least give me some hints. But from the stoic look on his face, it was evident that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.

I felt miserable.

“Okay, then,” I said, standing up. We were too close, so I had to sidestep him and move away. “Whenever you deem me ready to hear the truth, let me know.”

“Arabella.” Alvise called, his voice firm.

I turned to look at him. “Yes?”

“I did eighty percent of that to keep you alive,” he said, almost hesitantly. “It wasn’t just because I wanted to. I’d rather not have done any of it if it were left to me.”

I blinked, his words confusing me. “Then why did you do it?”

His jaw hardened, and his eyes bored into mine. And like he hated himself for admitting it, he said, “Because for some reason, I don’t like the thought of you dead.”

I shivered and swallowed hard, his words making my stomach flutter with a strange mixture of anticipation and fear.

“You said eighty percent of what you did was to keep me alive… What is the other twenty percent?”

The corner of his lips twitched, and a dark look crossed his face. “Jealousy.” He walked to the door, opened it, and walked out, but before closing the door behind him, he muttered, “I couldn’t fucking stand anyone else touching you.”
