A Shocking Offer

ARABELLA’S POV

“Arabella! Oh my… you’re bleeding!” I heard Sierra say, her sobs growing louder, but I couldn’t bring myself to understand what was going on.

I didn’t feel any pain… So was it really my blood?..

Screams broke out around us, people running around, trying to get as far away as possible. All I could do was stand there with my hand hovering over the phone.

“Sierra?” I whispered, suddenly feeling weak as a dull throb began to form in my arm.

“Call the police and run,” I said, using all my strength to glance back. The man was leaning against a wall his eyes still fixed on me.

I knew he’d fired the gun, but now he was trying to blend in, probably to avoid drawing any attention to himself. Who was he?

“You want me to leave you here? I can’t!”

I hissed, shaking my head back toward Sierra. I raised my hand to lightly shove her away, but pain exploded through my arm, and a painful scream tore from my throat, weakening me until I collapsed to the ground.

It hurt too much. The pain was unbearable. I felt like I couldn’t breathe the agony in my arm comparable to a sword being driven straight into my skin.

“Run, Sierra,” I choked out. “He’s still here. The shooter is still here.”

“But no…” Sierra’s panicked sobs sounded in my ear as she knelt beside me. “I just can’t leave without you.”

She tore off something, probably her shirt, and tried to press it against my bleeding arm. “So much blood… there’s so much blood!” she cried, her hands shaking violently.

Pain exploded through the wound when she pressed the material against it, and I winced, trying to swallow the scream threatening to tear through me again because I didn’t want her to panic.

I veered my head to the side, biting my lip painfully as I tried to check if the strange man was still there.

“He’s coming, Sierra! He’s walking here!” I muttered, my stomach tightening. “Just leave me! He’s going to shoot again!” I yelled, seeing the man rush toward us with his gun drawn.

Sierra refused to move, and all I could hear were her screams as she buried her head into my neck, pulling me close.

Guilt settled heavily in my chest, and all I could think about was how she hadn’t wanted to come, but I had forced her. I would rather die than let her get hurt because of my own stupid decision.

As the man’s footsteps drew closer, I closed my eyes in surrender, the pain almost pulling me straight into my own death because I could feel the blood leaving my body and my head becoming lighter with every passing second.

Suddenly, another gunshot rang through the air, and my heart lurched violently inside my chest.

erra…” I whispered, too weak to open my eyes or check on her.

I felt helpless, my body feeling like it wasn’t even connected to my head anymore.

“He’s been shot,” I heard Sierra mumble, and then she gasped, stuttering, her voice filled with shock. “Alvise just shot him.”

I woke up with a sharp pain coursing from my arm through the rest of my body, but I refused to glance at it or acknowledge that I was hurt.

I’d been conscious for some time now, but I only allowed myself to open my eyes now. I was particularly irritated by the fact that I was constantly having to deal with one threatening life encounter after another.

It had gotten depressing, and I wanted nothing more than to make it stop. But how?

It was either I was kidnapped one time, or I was about to be kidnapped, or I was shot, or I was about to be

shot at.

“Arabella?”

I turned to my side to see Sierra looking at me, dried tears stuck to her face. The sight made my stomach sink, and I looked away, unable to handle the new wave of guilt that washed over me.

Everything that had happened was my fault, and I was beginning to think I was cursed. Perhaps that would explain the endless series of unfortunate events that seemed to follow me everywhere.

“Are you pissed at me?” she whispered, trailing her fingers over mine.

I shook my head but didn’t reply, tears welling in my eyes.

“Arabella?” She sniffed. “Are you crying?”

I shook my head again, but a sob escaped my lips, exposing me. “I’m… tired of this… all this,” I said, sniffing. “I just want this to stop. All of it.”

Sierra cleared her throat, but I continued. “Why can’t I just have one month of peace? It’s always one thing after another. Is there something wrong with me?”

Sierra cleared her throat again, and I let out a frustrated breath. “Girl, what are you…”

I turned to look at her, but her eyes were fixed on the door.

I stilled, the hairs on the back of my neck standing.

There was only one person who could make Sierra speechless and one person who could make my entire body tense with uncomfortable awareness.

He was here.

And he’d heard me crying… I needed to dig a pit and jump into it because how could I face him after that

very embarrassing speech?

Think I’ll just go,” Sierra whispered, rising from her seat.

I eyed her, silently begging her to stay, but she sent me an apologetic look and darted off.

I groaned inwardly but couldn’t blame her. If I remembered correctly, she’d seen Alvise shoot a gun, so she was probably more scared of him than she had been before.

A cool scent wafted through the air, filling my nostrils, and I immediately knew that he was close. I just didn’t have the confidence to look up at him.

“How are you feeling?”

My stomach fluttered, warmth filling my chest from those four words he’d uttered.

He saved me. Again.

Even though I wanted to deny it, he’d been nothing but protective of me, especially over the last couple of days.

“I… I’m fine,” I whispered, still refusing to turn and look at him.

“What do you want, Arabella?” he asked, his voice cold and hard at the edges, but filled with a promise, one that he’d already proved he was capable of fulfilling.

What did I want?

I bit my lip and closed my eyes. “To be safe,” I said absentmindedly, tears slipping down my cheeks.

Silence stretched out around us, and I drowned in my thoughts, already regretting how pathetic my request sounded. But when Alvise finally spoke, my blood ran cold in my veins.

“You’re coming with me to Russia.”
