A Privilege

ARABELLA’S POV

“Okay, what’s going on?” Sierra exclaimed from behind me, and I closed my eyes, inhaling sharply.

What the hell was going on?-

Did Alvise really think he could wake up one day and ship me off to Russia just like that? I was livid… fuming, and it must have shown on my face as I turned back to glare at the lady he’d sent, because she stopped her fake smile the moment our eyes met.

“I can see you don’t want me here.” She sighed, “That makes the two of us.

I raised a brow. Oh, so yet again, I had to deal with another woman who liked him.

I folded my arms. “I’ll take a guess. You like him and you hate me?”

She scoffed. “It would be a privilege to like him.” She said, walking to the closet and basically yanking all my clothes off the shelves and throwing them onto the floor.

Sierra moved to stop her, but I grabbed her hand and mouthed for her to calm down, promising to explain everything to her later.

When she cooled down a bit, I returned to the conversation. “A privilege? I don’t think you need that to like someone. It’s just feelings. You can have them.”

Følding some clothes and placing them in the suitcase, she shook her head. “Even your words show how privileged you are. It’s not that easy.”

I was lost. Literally.

“I’m from a middle-class family.” I felt the need to say. “So don’t get the wrong idea.”

I mean, it was weird, right? Why would I need to be from a rich family to simply like someone? People liked celebrities they hadn’t met and probably never would. You didn’t have to be privileged to do that.

As if my words annoyed her, she huffed and squeezed my tank top tightly in her hands. “I was basically won in a war along with my mother. We work for the Pakhan and his family now, and that alone is a privilege!” she sneered, a hint of an Italian accent in her voice. “I am not of respectable blood like he is, and to like him is to give myself false hope, which would only put me in trouble.”

Despite her words, the longing in her eyes and her clenched fists told me she already couldn’t stop herself from liking him. She just didn’t dare to admit it, which was understandable considering what she’d said.

That was what bugged me. Her words.

What did she mean by being “won in a war”? Did wars happen frequently over there, or was it mainly a thing of the Bratva, which Alvise was the leader of?

I had several questions, but didn’t dare ask any. Not just because she would definitely not answer me because I could see she was the “loyal with your life” kind, but because Sierra was watching us intently and I could tell she was already starting to piece everything together.

“You don’t have the privilege to like him either.” The lady snorted, snapping me out of my thoughts.

om the look of satisfaction on her face, I could tell her words were intended to scare me away and bring medown. She was trying to show me my place and tell me being with him was as impossible as it was for

her.

For the sake of wiping the smug look off her face, I hummed. “Too bad I already have feelings for him. Now what?”

My words had the opposite effect I’d intended on her because she smiled. “Now you’ll suffer because you’ll watch him marry my madam in less than two weeks.”

Her madam? My chest tightened, a bitter taste settling in my mouth. “You work for Tatiana?”

“Do not call her by her name!”

I rolled my eyes. “Answer the question.”

“Yes.” She gritted. “I’m one of her maids.” She said it like it was an honour. “I’m lucky to be chosen.”

Sierra and I shared a look, and I had to hold in the gag I felt coming. An honour to be chosen as a maid? Much worse, Tatiana’s maid? What really went on in the Bratva, and why did it seem like they treated people so poorly?

Well, it wasn’t as surprising as I thought when I considered it deeper. If they were so comfortable killing,

what could be worse?

I walked closer to the lady and rubbed my hand over my chin. “How would ‘your madam’ feel if she knew you dreamt of being with her fiancé?”

Her eyes widened, filled with horror. “God forbid it! I respect madam very much!” She blurted, sweat forming on her forehead. “The Pakhan is handsome, smart, and powerful,” she said lovingly, “I could only dream of having a man like him, and I have made peace with that. I don’t want to lose my job!”

I raised my hands in surrender. “Chill out. I was just joking.”

I would never make the mistake of telling Tatiana anyone had eyes for Alvise. The last time I did, she made me run her own sister over. I still had nightmares about it.

“Who are you to the Pakhan that he allows you to come with us?”

I shot her a blank look. “Why didn’t you ask him this yourself when he asked you to come here?”

She dropped her face low and shook her head. “I would never dare question the Pakhan.”

I nodded. “But you can question me. Got it.”

I knew exactly what she was trying to do. She wanted to gather information so she could go and deliver it to Tatiana to impress her.

Only if she knew Tatiana and I had already met, and it was safe to say we didn’t exactly kick it off on the right foot.

I chuckled at the thought. I would never set eyes on that evil woman again. Russia, my foot.

“You’re not my boss!” The lady said, referencing my last statement. “And my life is not in your hands. You are a commoner.”

“And I’m happy to be one.”

She looked up and bit her lip. “Pakhan would never be with you. But that is the least of your problems She smiled, lowering her head. “His father would send you to your grave before you step foot on their property.”
