ARABELLA’S POV

“Get the first aid kit ready! Now!” Alvise ordered, and then without warning, he slid one hand around my waist and another beneath my legs, hoisting me up and carrying me bridal style to the jet.

“Put me down.” I managed to say weakly, too tired to do anything but try to blink away the blurriness in.

my eyes.

I mumbled other incoherent things as Alvise climbed the stairs of the jet, but he responded to none of

them.

My back touched a bed, and I forced my eyes open, looking around to see that we were already inside the jet.

“You’re losing so much blood, and you ripped your bandage.” Alvise hissed, his fingers grazing my skin as he pulled the jacket off fully. “Why would you not fucking tell me?”

“You didn’t let me speak.” I gritted softly. “And you kidnapped me.”

“Stop fucking saying that.” He groaned. “And keep those eyes open, Arabella.”

Why did he always have to be so grumpy and unbearable? I wanted to sleep… needed it, so why was he telling me not to?

I refused to listen to him and let the heaviness in my eyes take over.

Cool air hit my face, and I snapped my eyes open, a shocked gasp escaping my lips as my nose grazed Alvise’s.

He was close, towering over me with his hands on either side of the bed. “What are you doing?”

I blinked. “I want to sleep.”

“Don’t.” He rasped. “Did you not hear a thing I said?”

I was too tired to deal with him, so I closed my eyes. “Tell me when I wake up.”

“Fucking hell.” He hissed, and then his lips came down on mine, stealing the air from my lungs.

I snapped my eyes open, a shiver wrecking my body as he bit my lower lip and slipped his tongue into my mouth, deepening the kiss and nibbling on my lips every now and then.

Alvise pulled away after some seconds, and I struggled to catch my breath. “Why did you do that?”

He didn’t respond and glanced down, his eyes searching my arm. “Where’s the fucking first aid kit?” He seethed impatiently.

A few seconds later, two guards rushed to the bed with what I assumed were first aid kits. What I didn’t understand was why it had to be more than one.

“We didn’t know which one to get, sir,” one of them explained, unknowingly answering my question.

Wordlessly, Alvise took the kits from them and then opened one, looking inside intently, his focus not straying.

The sight of his swollen lips as he trapped one between his teeth reminded me of the kiss, heat rising to my cheeks.

It finally made sense.

He did it to keep me awake, and it was definitely working… as embarrassing as the realization was.

A sharp sting snapped me out of my thoughts, and I hissed, glancing down to see that Alvise had cut off the soaked bandage.

He put it aside before grabbing my uninjured hand and pulling me up so I was sitting.

“No.” I whined. “I want to lie down.”

“You will once I finish.” He muttered absentmindedly as he rummaged through the first aid kit.

“Did you have anything to eat today?” He asked almost hesitantly.

I raised a brow. “Are you… making an attempt at small talk?”

A muscle twitched in his jaw, and I could tell it was the last thing he wanted to do. So, why was he doing it

then?

“Answer my question.”

“No, I haven’t.” I replied. “I was too busy plotting my escape after you left to eat.”

That made his eyes flash, a dark look crossing his features.

“And before that?” He asked. “What were you doing?”

I sighed and hissed as I felt something poke my arm. “You sent someone to help me pack, right? I was speaking to her.”

“Speaking to her?” He didn’t sound pleased with that. “What were you talking about?”

I bit my lip and pondered on his question, unsure if I wanted to answer him or not.

“The question, Arabella.” Alvise muttered. “Answer it.”

I rolled my eyes but decided to fill him in anyway. “I was curious to know who she was.”

“Did she tell you?”

I frowned. He could be tricking me into giving him some sort of information, and I was falling for it. Though we kicked it off on the wrong foot and I already didn’t like the lady, I certainly wasn’t going to put her in trouble by saying something that would get her fired.

If she believed it was an “honour” to serve Tatiana, I couldn’t imagine what she thought of working for Alvise.

“You’re getting nosy these days.” I said instead, scrunching up my nose.

The edge of his upper lip lifted. “Nosy?” He said it like it was an impossible thing for him to be. “Definitely no” He said smoothly, his eyes clashing with mine. “And oh, I know exactly what you just did, Arabella.”

Another stupid blush warmed my cheeks, and I looked away. Of course, he caught that I changed the topic, but good thing he didn’t press further because that would have meant I had to lie, and I didn’t have- the energy to cook up a story at such short notice.

A click sounded, making me lower my gaze to see what it was, and the sight that greeted me shocked me

Somewhere between my rambling session, Alvise had managed to clean my wound, disinfect it, stitch t back up, and wrap a new bandage around it.

I couldn’t believe it.

How did I not feel the pain? There was one time I felt something sharp, but after that, I didn’t feel anything considerably off.

“How?” I asked him.

Alvise shut the second first aid box, and it closed with another click before he set it aside and brought his eyes to me. “I used numbing cream.”

“But even that still doesn’t cancel out the pain or…”

“Your mind was occupied with the questions.” He said nonchalantly. “Your brain didn’t have a chance to register the pain.”

“Oh.” I mouthed. “Do you think that…”

“No more questions. You need to sleep.” Alvise said, poking his inner cheek with his tongue. “The kiss definitely shut you up.” A smirk formed on his lips as his eyes held mine. “We can run it back.”
