ARABELLA’S POV

After my first night with Alvise, I’d always imagined what it would be like if he ever touched me again because, as the years flew by, it felt like I’d forgotten.
But now, as his hands moved painfully slowly over my boobs, I was reminded of it all again.
Intense.
That was the only word I could use to describe how crazy his touch made me feel.
And his words still hung in the air, making heat rise to my cheeks.
He wanted me to be jealous?
Colour me surprised.
Alvise’s hands suddenly stopped moving, and he stilled, his muscles visibly tightening. I watched him closely, noticing the way his eyes hardened, giving away the sudden change in his demeanor.
The pause was enough time to bring my common sense rushing back to me.
The man was engaged, and not only that, I was supposed to be upset with him.
“You’re… engaged.” I breathed, taking a step back to shrug his touch off.
He dropped his hands to his sides but said nothing. Instead, he grabbed the needle and suture and backed
me into the counter.
Silence, heavy and uncomfortable, hung in the air as I allowed him to do what he needed to stitch me up, biting my bottom lip between my teeth to control the hisses of pain that slipped out.
A few painful minutes later, he was done, and then he wrapped the wound back up.
“I’ll assign some guards to you that must be with you at all times.” Alvise said, stepping away to put some distance between us.
I noticed that he did that anytime he seemed to regret touching me. The thought sent a pang of pain through my chest, but I didn’t let it show.
I turned away from him toward the sink to wash my hands. “I don’t want bodyguards.” I muttered, drying my hands with tissue paper before tossing it into the bin,
“You don’t have to want them.” He said as I walked past him into the bedroom. “It’s a necessity for you at this point.”
I raised a brow. “Why?”
“Surely, you cannot be this slow.”
I sat on the bed with more force than necessary, the impact going straight to my ass.

“Does throwing insults my way make you feel better about yourself?”
vise slipped a hand into his pocket and nodded. “It does.”
“You’re psychotic.” I sneèred, glaring at him.

“And you’re unnecessarily stubborn.” He said, walking to the door. “The guards will be here in five minutes.”
“I need to talk to you about something.” I said, stopping him.
He turned back to glance at me impatiently. “What?”
“My clothes.” I stood up. “They aren’t here yet.”
Alvise glanced at his wristwatch. “I’ll have the maid bring them up here.”
I shook my head. “Is it going to be the same maid that packed my things up?” I asked.
Alvise nodded. “Yes.”
I shook my head, alarmed. I wanted nothing to do with Irina, and as far as I was concerned, I was going to stay as far away from her as possible.
She’d proven that her loyalty lay with Tatiana, and while I had no problem with that, I wasn’t comfortable being around someone who was cruel enough to stand and watch me crying in pain, and all they could do was watch.
“I don’t want her to bring them to me, please.” I said to Alvise, determined to limit all contact with her.
He looked annoyed, like my demands were stopping him from being somewhere else he desperately
wanted to be.
“Done.” He said, and before I could say anything else, he left the room.
A few minutes later, I got a knock on the door, and when I opened it, there were four guards standing outside my door, one of them holding my suitcases.
“Thank you.” I said to him before rolling them inside and shutting the door.
I refused to unpack, simply because I was still determined to leave and believed that my stay in Russia was going to be a silly dream I will forget the moment I got back to London.
My stomach growled, alerting me that I was hungry, so I looked out the window.
The sun had already set, telling me it was already dinner time, but I was probably going to sleep hungry, so I undressed and went into the bathroom to shower. The same bathroom that no longer had a door.
After I finished, I entered the bedroom with a towel strapped around my chest and was about to pick out nightwear when another knock sounded on the door.
I dropped my nightwear on the bed and walked to the door, asking, “Who’s there?”
“Pakhan instructed me to call you down for dinner, madam.” The person behind the door announced.

My heart skipped its next beat, and I held onto the wall close by for support.

Avise wanted me to go downstairs for dinner… with his family? The same people who couldn’t even hide
their disdain for me?
I shook my head even though no one could see me and said, “Please tell him I’m not hungry.””
There was silence for some time before the messenger spoke. “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t deliver a message like that to the Pakhan. You can come down and tell him yourself.” He said, and then I heard his retreating footsteps.
I groaned in frustration and dropped onto the bed, my eyes fixed on the ceiling.
I was nervous, terribly so, and the thought of seeing his father again and looking into those dead blue eyes made my lips tremble.
My stomach growled again, and I stood from the bed, now motivated to get dressed. If I didn’t go down, there was every chance Alvise would punish me for disobeying him.
I changed into a loose top with sleeves long enough to cover my arm and jeans, before tying my hair into ponytail and applying lip gloss.
I slipped on casual footwear and, satisfied with how I looked, exited the room and hesitantly made my way downstairs.
I was halfway down the stairs when I paused and felt the aching need to turn back, the sight before me seeming to dry out my lungs.
Everyone was all dressed up, their evening gowns and suits making me the least dressed person in the
room.
But that wasn’t what caught my eye.
Viktoriya, the same woman I was forced to run over and suspected was either dead or crippled, sat next to her sister at the dining table, giggling at something she said.
Our eyes clashed, as though she’d sensed me staring at her, and she frowned. “What’s she doing here?”
