I jumped off the counter, ignoring the pain shooting through my arm as I rushed to catch up with Alvise. “Wait!”
He ignored me, grabbing his car keys from the nightstand before striding toward the door, his eyes completely bloodshot.
“Alvise!” I said frantically, moving to stand in front of the door. “What are you planning on doing?”
My blood was boiling in my veins, and it still felt difficult to comprehend what he’d just said.
Tatiana was no longer his fiancée because of what I’d said?
No.
That couldn’t happen. Why would he do that just because she hurt me? He wouldn’t… And even if he would, she’d kill me for it.
“Get out of my way, Arabella.” He said, his voice calm, but his fingers flexing restlessly at his sides.
“You’re not thinking.”
Alvise raised a brow, his blue eyes narrowing slightly as he scraped his tongue over his teeth. “I’m thinking perfectly well.”
I studied his face, and the deep scowl etched across it said otherwise, so I sighed. “No, you’re not. And… what do you mean by what you said?”
Alvise stepped closer, towering over me. “Exactly what I said. Now, move away.”
“You would end your engagement for me?” I blurted in disbelief, unable to believe that he actually meant what he’d said.
His voice turned cold. “Not for you.”
My face fell, but I recovered quickly, straightening myself. “Then why?”
“Because you’re my guest, therefore you’re under my protection.” He said angrily. “And I specifically made it clear that no harm was to come to you.”
“That’s not enough reason for you to end your engagement.”
An amused breath escaped his lips, but there was no hint of humour on his face. “One minute,” he said, walking closer until he backed me into the wall. “You complain that I never do anything when she harms you.” Alvise hummed, his gaze fixed on mine. “And then when I actually want to do something, you tell me
not to.”
He was right. I sounded pathetic, and my actions were conflicting, but I couldn’t help it. It wasn’t my fault that upon stepping foot into his house, I’d found out that I was the most disdainful thing to his family, and they didn’t even know me.

His father saw Tatiana in the act of harassing me, but chose to look away. His mother was already anticipating their wedding… so, why would I want to be the reason it was called off?
I didn’t know what I expected when I wanted him to stand up for me, but it wasn’t this.
“You didn’t do it when it mattered.” I whispered, refusing to look at him. “And ending your engagement was never my wish.”
Alvise placed his hands on both sides of my head, against the door, trapping me between his arms. “I don understand you, Arabella.” He said, his voice full of displeasure. “And I don’t think you even/understand yourself.”
I frowned. “I understand myself pretty well, thank you.”
“I beg to differ.”
“Then that’s on you.” I shot back. “You were going to marry her for a reason, so why change your mind now? After all, you looked very happy together.”
He smirked. “Are you jealous?”
I laughed bitterly. “If it happens that I’m suddenly miserable enough to envy your relationship, then I might as well be six feet under.”
I was bluffing. I knew it, he knew it, and the walls probably knew it too.
He searched my face carefully, taking his time to study every reaction. “You’re a pretty bad liar.”
My legs felt wobbly as I stared into his eyes. “Is that what you want?”
“What?”
“For me to be jealous?”
An unreadable expression crossed his face, and just when I thought he was going to say something, he moved away and glanced at my arm. “I still need to stitch you up.”
I refused to let it go. “You still haven’t given me an answer, so I’ll assume that’s a yes.”
He stayed silent, stroking his chin before nodding toward the bathroom. “Go in so I can stitch your arm before it gets infected.”
I shook my head and walked away, muttering under my breath, “I never saw you as the type to be a
coward.”
His hands were on my waist before I could make it far, and then he turned me around to face him.
“What did you just say?”
I let my gaze, lazy and bored, trail down to his hands on my waist and sighed. “I think you have a thing for touching me, Mr. Valerio.”
He tensed, and then, as if my words had made him want to prove my point, his hands moved higher until they rested just below my breasts.

I sucked in a breath and hissed, trying to pull away, his touch making me shiver. “Answer the question. What did I hear you say?” He asked, his voice dangerously low.
I chuckled nervously. “I said you like touching…”
“Before that.” He cut me off.
Shit.
I couldn’t repeat it. I didn’t want to… What was I even thinking when I said it to him?
I wanted to back out and walk away, but the look in his eyes, as if he was daring me to speak up, made me
tip my chin up.
“I said… I didn’t think you would be a coward…”
His hands moved up until he was holding my boobs over my dress, his large hands almost covering them completely.
“Alvise… what are you…”
“A coward?” He huffed, gently cupping my boobs and making me melt against him. “I’m nothing like a coward, Arabella.”
I felt his touch all the way to my core, and I had to press my legs together to ease the sudden discomfort.
Alvise knew exactly what he was doing, because his eyes followed the movement, and the corner of his lips tipped up.
“And what did you say?” He rasped. “You asked if I wanted you to be jealous?” He shook his head. “Jealous is a fucking understatement.”
