ARABELLA’S POV

It was hard for me to admit, but for some reason, all I could think about was Alvise’s promise to me that morning.

Did I believe him?

It was difficult to answer that. I didn’t know what to trust or believe, especially when it came to him. Bura tiny speck of my heart kept telling me to believe him because he had no reason to lie to me.

Alvise left after saying those words to me, and I took a shower and spent the last few hours trying to convince myself that everything that had happened at breakfast wasn’t real.

A faint knock on the door made me jump a little, and I frowned. I’d been doing that a lot lately, and it was getting out of hand.

I needed to chill out, but I couldn’t even blame myself because I was in enemy territory.

Anything could happen.

I rose from the armchair and walked to the door, unlocking it just a little so I could peek out and see who

it was.

My hands turned sweaty as I stared at the last person I expected to see standing outside my door.

“Madam…” I breathed, unsure of what else to call her.

Mrs. Valerio raised a brow, her sharp eyes almost blinding me as she narrowed them. “I want to speak to you.”

I groaned inwardly. I was still trying to figure out why she would come to see me, and now she wanted to speak to me? I had a feeling that whatever she had to say, it couldn’t possibly be good.

“I’m sure you heard me,” she said impatiently, glancing at her wristwatch like Alvise normally did.

“I’m sorry, madam… But…”

“I said,” she took a step forward, gritting her teeth, “I want to speak to you.”

My chest was tight with unease, and I shifted on my feet, wondering how I could get out of the situation without making things worse.

The impatience in her eyes grew with each passing second before she finally snapped. “I don’t think you can come into my house and then deny me at least a conversation when I ask.”

I took in a deep breath, the awkward feeling from breakfast returning all over again. “Alright.” I walked out, sidestepping her and shutting the door behind me.

“Follow me,” she ordered, turning around.

I dug my nails into my palm and made a move to oblige before one of the guards at the door stepped in

front of me.

Wm sorry, madam, but we have strict orders to restrict you to the room.”

I scrunched up my nose in displeasure, but deep down, and for the first time, I was actually happy about the rule Alvise had set.

Mrs. Valerio stopped and turned back when she noticed I wasn’t following behind her. “What are you waiting for?”

The guard answered for me. “The Pakhan gave strict instructions not to let her out of the room, madam.”

A bitter look appeared on her face as she approached us. “Excuse me?”

The guard tried to repeat what he said, but her hand collided with his face at lightning speed, shocking me

into silence.

“Have you forgotten that the Pakhan is my son?” she spat. “What makes you think that any silly rule applies to me?”

The guard didn’t even touch his face or acknowledge that he had been slapped. “I apologize, madam, but I’m just doing my job.”

Her sharp eyes flared at him before they landed on my face. “Alright, then. Since I can’t have a conversation with you in private, I’ll do it right here.”

My heart sank, and I nodded, the relief I’d felt vanishing immediately.

Mrs. Valerio looked me up and down like I was a doll on display before her eyes came back up to mine.

“Are you pregnant?”

I choked on my own air and coughed, her question throwing me completely off balance.

I sobered up and frowned. “Pregnant?” I asked in disbelief. “I’m not pregnant. Do I look like I am?”

Her eyes trailed down to my belly, and the discomfort I felt from her presence increased.

“Well, the fact that your stomach is flat now doesn’t mean there isn’t a baby in there,” she said with contempt. “You could just be in the early stages.”

“I am nowhere near pregnant,” I said, firmer this time, the timidness in my voice now completely gone.

She scoffed. “Good. I didn’t plan on raising your bastard child anyway.”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re excused,” she snapped, glancing at her wristwatch again.

Her attitude pissed me off, and my blood boiled in my veins. I was tired of trying to be nice when she was being blatantly rude.

The only problem was that the woman looked like she wanted to get a reaction out of me, so I had to tread carefully.

“Why did you come here to speak to me?” I asked cautiously.

She stepped forward until she was standing directly in my personal space. “I wanted to know why my son would want to bring someone like you into his house.”

My lips twitched, her words hitting me hard in the chest. “Someone like me?”

“A nobody.” She enunciated each word. “I mean, who are your parents? I haven’t heard of them.”

I folded my arms. “Are you just trying to lure me into telling you my background history so you can use t against me?”

She laughed bitterly, her sharp eyes almost watering in the process. “Lure you? I already have every piece of information about your life that’s worth knowing sitting on my desk.”

My face fell.

She noticed and laughed in my face again. “What did you think was going to happen? That you would show up here and I wouldn’t do a background check?”

A knot formed in my stomach, twisting uncomfortably and making me dig my nails deeper into my palm.

I didn’t like the thought of anyone in Alvise’s family knowing anything about my life because I was sure they would use it to harm me.

“Cat caught your tongue?” she mocked, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I faked a smile. “Actually, no.”

Her smile disappeared. “I want you out of this house as soon as…

I zoned out as movement behind her made me flick my eyes in that direction, and then my throat dried up, the sight of the tall, intimidating man striding toward us almost suffocating me.

Hard blue eyes met mine before his gaze flicked to his mother standing in front of me.

His eyes narrowed, then he stopped a few feet away, cutting his oblivious mother off. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
