ARABELLA’S POV

His rough words, spoken in the most suggestive way, sent heat straight to the spot between my legs.
I held his gaze for a while, searching his face. The same face that gave absolutely nothing away.
“Let me down, Alvise,” I rasped, wiggling in his hold.
“You haven’t answered my question, Arabella.”
“What question?” I said, glaring at him. “You’re getting a kick out of this.”
The corner of his lips lifted. “A kick out of what?”
“Pulling my leg!” I snapped, smacking his arm lightly. “You’re doing that thing where you smile without actually moving your face.”
He did it again, his eyes sparking with dark amusement. “Enlighten me.”
I pursed my lips. “You already know what I’m talking about.”
He shook his head, his eyes never straying from my face. “I’m afraid I don’t.”
I furrowed my brows. “Put me down, Alvise.”
The spark in his eyes disappeared, and his expression became serious again. “Don’t make the same mistake again.”
“What mistake?” I feigned indifference as he set me gently on the floor.
“Don’t open the door randomly. Always check to know who it is.”
In the mood to mess with him, I trailed behind him as he walked into his walk-in closet. “But you already put guards outside the door. Against my will, by the way, so why do I still need to be careful?”
His hand paused over the dress shirt he was reaching for, and he turned to look at me. “You’re arguing again.”
“Because you never tell me anything! I’m asking you why I need to be careful now, and you’re not giving me a reason.”
Alvise leaned against the glass panel and crossed his ankles. “After meeting the people who reside in this house, is that still a question you need me to answer?”
I dropped my gaze to the floor.
He was right. His family was crazy and very confusing to understand.
I didn’t know the dynamic yet, but it was definitely not what had been painted for the media.
Everyone back in London knew how influential and rich his family was and how they had ties in politics.

Back then, I never saw their actual faces because a sticker was always used to cover them whenever they were shown on the news or on blogs.
Only Alvise’s face remained uncovered.
Now, I couldn’t help but wonder how they covered their criminal tracks, or why the media didn’t dare report on their position in the Bratva.
“Where’s the phone I got you?”
I looked up to see Alvise’s eyes on me, and I scratched the back of my head. “It’s in the room.”
He stroked his chin. “Have you started using it?”
I gave him a blank look. “If I did, I’m sure you would have known, considering that you bugged it.”
Once again, he didn’t try to deny it. “Yes. I know you didn’t use it, and that’s why I’m asking.”
“Alvise!” I called in disbelief, moving to stand in front of him. “You do know that bugging a phone is an invasion of privacy, right?”
He scraped his tongue over his teeth. “I’m aware.”
I blinked. “And?”
“I don’t care.”
I sighed, turning around and walking toward the exit. “You’re a lost cause. Go get that therapy.”
Ignoring my blatant recommendation, he said, “Go get changed, Arabella.”
I paused and turned on my heel, eyeing him suspiciously. “Why?”
Something unreadable passed through his eyes, and I suddenly became uncomfortable. Since he got back, I’d been noticing that something seemed to be amiss. Like he wanted to say something but was holding himself back.
“What’s going on?” I asked cautiously, folding my arms.
He shook his head and turned back to the glass panel. “Nothing. Just go get ready. Now.”
His tone made me walk out of the closet without bothering to press him for an answer.
I couldn’t keep up with his mood swings, especially when he spoke to me in that authoritative tone of his. It made me see stars with anger.
Frustrated, I groaned loudly and sat on the bed, taking a deep breath.
I’d been forcing away thoughts of her and pretending she didn’t exist so I wouldn’t crawl into the sad puddle in my heart, but I could no longer do it.
I missed Sierra.
I missed her so much that I had no desire to live another second without seeing her.

How was she? Was she okay? Was she back to work? Did she loathe me?

The questions kept piling up, and the guilt in my chest made it so heavy that I rubbed my palm over it back and forth to soothe the ache.
I went against her decision for us to just spend the little time we had left together because I thought I could actually escape.
And when I realized I couldn’t, I decided to trick her and leave her in the apartment because a large part of my mind kept telling me that I was ruining her life.
“You’re still not dressed.”
I jumped slightly, looking up to see Alvise walking into the room with a change of clothes draped over his
arm.
I eyed the dark suit in his hands and shook my head. “So you get back from wherever you went to in a suit, then change into another suit?”
“Precisely,” Alvise said, unbothered by my curious looks.
“I want to take a shower,” I said, standing up.
“You can.” He moved toward the door. “I’ll go take one in the guest room.”
I tapped my foot on the floor, assessing him. “Why can’t you just wait until I’m done?”
He glanced at his wristwatch before turning to look at me. “There’s no time for that.”
His words made my stomach churn, a feeling of unease settling inside it. “Why are you in such a hurry?”
It was weird, mostly because Alvise was never one to rush. He always took his time, no matter what the situation was, though he still got things done fast.
I bit my lip and asked, “Where are we going?”
His blue eyes held my gaze, so intense that I held my breath. And in the most mysterious tone, he said, “We have somewhere important to be.”
