ARABELLA’S POV

Something was different.

I didn’t need to see it yet to know. I could just feel it.

If it wasn’t the way Alvise was acting, it was the way my body was communicating it to me.

After he had left the room, I spent a lot of time contemplating whether I wanted to follow his order or not.

Where was he taking me? Why did “we” need to go together?

I didn’t know what to think.

Of course, I knew Alvise wouldn’t hurt me. That was a fact, but I still couldn’t understand why he didn’t want to tell me anything.

“Arabella?” He tapped on the bathroom door from outside, his voice breaking the silence that had stretched on for several minutes. “You’ve been in there for quite a while.”

I stared at my reflection in the mirror and sighed. I was already showered and had a towel wrapped around me, but I just couldn’t bring myself to step out.

“I’ll be out soon,” I said, running my hands through my damp hair.

“I’ve been back in the bedroom for over twenty minutes,” Alvise said, his voice hard at the edges. “I told you there’s no time to waste.”

“Just give me a minute!” I rasped, taking a deep breath and exhaling dramatically.

I wanted to stay in the bathroom all day, but then I recalled how Alvise had broken down the door effortlessly last time.

There was no hiding from him.

I walked to the door and unlocked it, stepping out to see him standing at the window with his phone pressed to his ear.

I could hear him speaking, but I didn’t understand the words, and then I remembered… he was speaking Russian.

Slowly, I walked into the closet and grabbed a brown long jumpsuit and trench coat.

I would have preferred a T-shirt and jeans, but since I didn’t know where we were going, I felt it was better to dress up a little so I wouldn’t get surprised.

I dressed up quickly, put on low kitten heels, and sprayed Alvise’s cologne before walking out of the closet.

Alvise was still on the phone when I got back into the bedroom, but this time his words were rougher and more rushed, and his eyes landed on me as he turned around.

I moved to stand in front of the vanity to brush my hair, holding his gaze in the mirror, my heart beating faster with each passing second.

Using the hair dryer, I dried my hair, brushed it again, and packed it into a ponytail before putting on lip gloss and some earrings.

“Are you done?” Alvise asked, seemingly finished with his phone call.

“Yes.”

“Let’s go then.”

I turned on my heel and walked past him to the door, but waited patiently for him to open it.

“Wait,” he said, his hands pausing on the door handle. “Where’s your phone?”

I looked back and pointed to the nightstand. “There.”

Alvise nodded toward it. “Go pick it up.”

“I don’t want to use it…”

“I said, pick it up, Arabella.”

Hesitantly, I walked to the nightstand and yanked the phone off it before walking back to the door.

Without a glance in my direction, Alvise held the door open and waited for me to walk out before doing the same and shutting it.

He stopped to speak to the guards in Russian, so I walked ahead of him, counting each step I took and hoping some sort of miracle would happen and we wouldn’t have to go anywhere anymore.

Alvise caught up with me when I reached the top of the stairs. “Are you wearing my cologne?”

I glanced at him and smiled mischievously. “I found it in my room.”

“Your room, huh?”

I nodded. “Yes. Well, last I checked, I told you the room belongs to me until I leave.”

Alvise swiped his thumb over his upper lip. “You did.”

Satisfied with having the upper hand, at least so I thought, I walked down the stairs, a little bounce in my

steps.

Thankfully, we didn’t run into anyone as we reached the foot of the stairs and walked all the way to the front door.

The moment Alvise opened the large doors, the anxiety I’d shoved down and tried to ignore rose back up, making my fingers shake around the phone in my hand.

“Are you okay?” Alvise asked as we stepped out and he shut the door.

I glanced at him, breathing in the cold Moscow air. “Will you let me stay back if I tell you I’m not?”

“No, I won’t,” he said, moving past me.

thought so.” Lmumbled under my breath, following behind him.

“I heard that.”

I glared at his back. “Well, okay then. Don’t ask me stupid questions.”

Alvise paused abruptly, making me almost run into his back. “What are you doing?”

He turned around, his intense eyes locking onto mine. “Watch that tongue, Arabella. I don’t need to tel you what happens if you don’t.”

A retort sat on the tip of my tongue, but the weight of his guards’ gazes made me swallow it.

Alvise searched my face, his brow raised, but when I said nothing, he walked to the garage, slipping his phone into his pocket.

Some of his guards did the same, getting into four different cars and driving them out of the garage until the cars were in a straight line, with a huge space dividing them into two groups in the middle.

Alvise got into a white Maybach and drove the car into the large space his guards had created.

I could only watch, astonished and dumbfounded by the sight. If anything, it only made my anxiety

worsen.

Igor, one of the few guards I recognised, walked up to me and gestured toward the waiting cars. “The Pakhan is waiting for you, madam.”

I nodded, and with hasty steps, I walked to Alvise’s car.

This wasn’t the first time his men had driven with us. They’d also done something similar in London a few times, but since we got to Russia and went out last time, they hadn’t come with us.

So, why now?

Igor opened the door for me, and I got into the car, my hands shaking as I fastened my seat belt.

I turned to look at Alvise and sucked in a sharp breath when I found his blue eyes fixed on me.

I held his gaze, my chest rising and falling with each anxious, breath. “Please, don’t shut me up this time.” I

pleaded, my voice soft. “Where are we going? And why is it so important?”

Alvise poked his inner cheek with his tongue, his intense eyes drawing me in as a dark look crossed his face and his jaw hardened. “We’re getting married.”
