ABELLA’S POV

Over the last couple of months, with every shocking thing that had been going on in my life, I’d learnt to trust my instincts and listen to my gut anytime I felt something out of the ordinary was about to happen.

And so, I’d trusted that something was amiss with Alvise and the “important” place he wanted us to go to together, but nothing could have prepared me for what he had just said to me.

My mouth hung open, my eyes bulging out of their sockets, and my heart beat so fast, I was certain he could hear it.

“You’re joking… right?” I blurted, clutching my chest to ease the discomfort each breath seemed to bring

Alvise stared into my eyes, searching every expression on my face, though there wasn’t a single trace of emotion on his. Then, with a calmness that did nothing but tip me further over the edge, he said, “I do not joke, Arabella.”

What?

I didn’t know how to act… what to do… what to think.

A wedding? How could he look me in the eye and say something like that so casually, like he was talking about the weather?

I struggled with my seatbelt, trying desperately to take it off while shaking my head, because nothing made sense at all.

“Calm down,” Alvise said calmly, his eyes still fixed on me.

I refused to answer and turned to open the door, but then a loud clicking sound filled the car, making me jump.

He’d locked the door.

I snapped my head toward him. “Let me out! I don’t know what’s going on with you, but I need to get out of this car!”

Alvise’s eyes snapped to my seatbelt. “Put it on.”

“Are you serious right now?” I argued, my eyes widening with disbelief. “You just told me we’re getting married. MARRIED!”

“And your reaction is to try to get out of the car?”

“What do you expect me to do? You made me get dressed for a wedding I knew nothing about?” I gritted out, my hands shaking violently. “What reaction were you expecting from me?”

“Now you know about it,” Alvise said, starting the engine. “So put in that fucking seatbelt, Arabella.”

The car started moving, and all I could do was stare at him, wondering if I was going insane… if this was some sort of dream.

But it wasn’t.

new it wasn’t

My eyes darted to his dark suit and tie, and suddenly, it all started feeling terrifyingly real.

Of course, this wasn’t a prank. Alvise never played pranks.

My fingers started twitching, and it felt like I was about to have a panic attack. I was going to throw up. I…

Strong hands suddenly landed on my thigh, with a thumb stroking slowly down’ my skin all the way to my knee, and oddly enough, it made me feel better.

I was able to breathe again.

But I couldn’t think. I tried, but eventually, I gave up and relaxed into the seat, even the car felt suffocating, pressing against my lungs and making me nauseous.

though the air inside

The car ride continued for several minutes, filled with silence, the only audible sound being the soft hum of the engine beneath us.

The car suddenly came to a stop in front of a building, but I didn’t pay any attention to it. Instead, I craned my head back and stared blankly at the roof, as though it could somehow give me an answer.

“Arabella?”

I didn’t turn to look at him.

Alvise sighed, and I could feel the tension radiating off him. “Stop making this harder than it fucking

needs to be.”

I lost it.

“I am making this hard?” I yelled, straightening up and turning to look at him. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

His eyes narrowed. “I’ve warned you about that tone, Arabella. Now is not the time.”

I breathed out in disbelief. “I don’t give a fuck about the ‘tone’ I need to speak to you in now, Alvise. You just told me we’re getting married. ME AND YOU!”

Alvise grabbed a wristwatch from the center console and clasped it around his wrist, his movements calm and unhurried. “I know exactly what I told you. You don’t need to repeat it.”

“And why did you tell me that? Why are we getting married now?”

He looked up, and his blue eyes pierced into mine, a muscle in his jaw twitching. “Because it is necessary.”

I frowned. “That’s all you’re going to tell me? That?”

“Yes.”

I snorted. “I’m not getting married to you! It’s not happening.”

A dark look crossed his face, and he tilted his head to the side. “It is, and you’ll be present for it, every step of the fucking way.”

d you not hear me?” My nails dug so deeply into my palms, I could almost feel the bruises forming. “This marriage is not happening.”

Alvise scoffed and pulled the key out of the engine. “Try me.”

I wanted to scream and yell in his face. I wanted to do something, anything that would make him understand just how serious I was.

I wasn’t bluffing, and I meant every single word.

“Alvise?” I called his attention, breaking the thick silence that had settled over the car.

Slowly, almost hesitantly, he glanced at me, his fiery eyes holding mine.

“I’ve been patient enough, letting you do whatever you want and barely protesting your decisions, but this? This is taking it too far,” I said, the anger reverberating through me so strongly that I shook with every

word.

I pointed to myself, and then to him. “But this?…” I gestûred toward the building I’d now realised was a wedding registry. “…is taking it too far.”

Alvise leaned back in his seat, his full attention still on me, his eyes sparking with annoyance and something dangerously close to determination. “What are you trying to say, Arabella?”

I balled my hands into fists and leaned closer until we were only a few inches apart. With all the rage I could muster, I seethed, “I’m NOT marrying you today.”

Alvise tapped a finger against his thigh and straightened up. Before I could even register what he was doing, he grabbed the back of my head, fisting his fingers into my ponytail and pulling me closer until our lips brushed.

His voice, filled with a dangerous promise, cut through the suffocating silence of the car as he said, “I’ll marry you today, in the next fucking thirty minutes, and no one, not even you, will stop it.”
