Silent Challenge

ARABELLA’S POV

Sometimes, your ego would try to push you to do or say things you normally wouldn’t, just so it could feel satisfied.

Never give in.

I’d learned that giving in could, in fact, ruin you and put you in far more trouble than you could ever imagine.

So, as I stared at the dangerous man in front of me, with his threat still lingering in the air as he waited for me to say or do something that would tip him over the edge, I did what any sane person would do.

I took another step back and turned around, refusing to take the bait.

“I hate you,” I mumbled, heading for the stairs.

I felt his eyes on me with each step I took, and it unnerved me so much that I paused in the middle of the stairs and snapped my head back to look at him. “Stop staring!”

He stared even more, and when I opened my mouth to cuss him out, he spoke. “Be ready by sunset, Arabella.”

I swallowed the words I’d planned to throw at him and frowned. “Why?”

Alvise poked his inner cheek with his tongue. “I told you we have somewhere to be today.”

He did.

I remembered him saying it to me, but I hadn’t really thought much of it.

I shook my head. “I don’t want to go. I’m busy.”

He stared at me blankly. “Be ready, Arabella,” he said firmly.

“The first time I stepped out with you, you shot two men.” I snapped, stepping down the stairs. “And the

last time?” I walked until I was back in front of him. “You forced me to marry you!”

Ignoring me, Alvise pulled his phone from his pocket and started typing God knows what.

“I’m speaking to you, Alvise!”

He looked up, his blue eyes almost sparking with amusement. “And I’m listening.”

“But you’re not saying anything.”

“I don’t have anything to say.”

I huffed, putting my hand on my hip defiantly. I hated how he was good at setting the tone of the conversation to fit whatever mood he was in..

I was trying to argue and make it clear that I was pissed, but all he could do was act amused.

Wm not leaving this house to go anywhere with you today,” I gritted.

Alvise slipped his phone into his pocket and rose to his feet, towering over me. “Try me, Arabella.”

My fingers flexed at my sides as I glared at him. “You don’t scare me.”

He shrugged. “Fair.”

Something about his calmness rubbed me the wrong way, and a terrible feeling’settled in my gut.

As I turned around and finally walked away, moving up the stairs with the weight of his gaze on me. I felt like this was far from over.

I had to come up with a plan, or else…

He was going to make me go with him whether I liked it or not.

I was in the middle of a nap when a stupid knock sounded on the door, making me jerk awake.

The first thing I did was roll my eyes as I sat up on the bed and buried my head in my palm.

Why did people in the mansion enjoy waking me up anytime I slept?

Since I stepped foot in here, I was sure I had never gone to sleep and woken up at my own time.

Someone always did it for me.

Grudgingly, I got down from the bed and walked to the door. “Who’s there?”

“Irina.”

My face fell. “What do you want?”

I could hear the eye roll in her voice as she muttered, “The Pakhan sent me to you.”

Memories of how my conversation with Alvise had ended that morning made me rub my elbow cautiously.

Why did he send Irina to me?

Hesitantly, I unlocked the door and pulled it open, but nothing prepared me for the sight that greeted me.

Irina stood with a rolling rack that had three huge bags hanging from it. “What is that?” I asked, eyeing the bags.

“A rolling rack.”

I rolled my eyes. “I know what it’s called, thank you. Why do you have it?”

“Like I said,” she forced a smile. “The Pakhan sent me to you…” She pointed at the rack. “And this is why.”

I groaned inwardly and dug my nails into my palm. “Take them back. I don’t need them,” I said, about to shut the door.

Irina rushed forward and pushed past me, walking into the room. “I’m sorry, but I follow the Pakhan’s orders, not yours.” She rolled the rack to a stop in the middle of the room and turned to look at me. “And he ordered me to get you ready for tonight.”

I glared at her while simultaneously thinking of all the ways I could escape leaving the house with Alvise.

I didn’t know what I was more mad at… Alvise ignoring my refusal to go out with him or Irina always being the one sent up to the room for everything.

“Are you the only staff here?” I inquired, catching her off guard.

She unzipped one of the bags and pulled the dress out. “No. Why do you ask?”

I faked a sigh. “Oh, nothing. I’m just trying to figure out why you’re always the one being sent to my room. Surely, there are other people in the house.”

She dropped the dress on the couch and shot me a harsh look. “Your room”? So you’re really trying to take my madam’s place?”

There it was.

I knew it was only a matter of seconds before she brought her ‘madam’ up.

“Trying?” I scoffed. “Who’s ‘trying’ to do anything? I definitely am not.”

“You don’t fool me,” she snapped. “You think just because the both of them are having a misunderstanding, you have a chance to come between them?”

I sat on the armchair and laughed lightly, shooting back the look of disdain she had given me. “I don’t need a ‘chance’, silly girl.” Marveling at the confused look on her face, I raised my hand, wiggling my fingers to show her the wedding ring. “I’m already married to him.”
