ARABELLA’S POV
With my mouth suddenly dry and his question sending tingles through my brain, I blurted, “No, it isn’t.”
Alvise’s eyes narrowed, and he tapped a finger against my waist, the corner of his lips lifting slightly. “Interesting.”
My breath hitched in my throat, and I looked away, avoiding his eyes.
What did he mean?
Alvise had to be messing with me because it had never been obvious that he liked touching me.
In fact, it was quite the opposite because each time we mistakenly made physical contact he would pull away like my skin burned him.
The thought alone made me frown as I recalled how badly he had treated me in London.
“I want to go back to the room,” I mumbled, making a move to stand up.
His grip on my waist tightened. “Don’t you think it’s quite unfair that just a few days ago, you accused me of ‘trapping’ you in there, and now you’re eager to go back to that same room?”
I turned my head back to him and found him watching me, his blue eyes flickering with amusement.
I shrugged. “I just feel like taking a nap.”
Alvise hummed. “If I remember correctly,” his hands moved to my torso, “you told me you were
suffocated.”
I struggled to ignore his touch and glared at him. “What are you trying to say?”
“Why are you eager to go back if you’re so suffocated?”
My heart skipped its next beat, and I resisted the urge to facepalm myself.
The answer sat at the tip of my tongue, but I didn’t dare say it out loud. Being in his presence was more awkward than it had ever been before.
I couldn’t understand the conflicting feelings swirling inside me. I was supposed to be mad at him, and I was, but sometimes, the anger almost got forgotten whenever he touched me and said things I’d never heard him say before.
I didn’t like that, so I was trying to avoid him so I could focus on what was important.
Like he could read right through me, Alvise brought his lips to my ear. “Are you avoiding me, wife?”
I gasped, surprised. “I’m not your wife.”
“Yes, you are.” His hands moved higher until they were resting just below my breasts. “And you know it. So, why deny it?”

I leaned back to look him in the eye and brought my face closer to his until we were sharing the same breath, and all I could see were endless depths of blue. “A marriage only counts if both parties consent to
never did.”__
His eyes hardened. “You consented, not just verbally, but also with your signature.”
“You forced me to…”
He grabbed my chin, forcing my face even closer. “We’re married, Arabella. That’s it. I’d advise you to come to terms with that and stop trying to gaslight yourself.”
My nostrils flared. “This doesn’t feel like a marriage, and this is not how I envisioned my wedding morning to be…” I pursed my lips, my heart beating faster as I thought carefully about my next words before saying/ them out loud. “And you’re definitely not who I wanted it to be with.”
Alvise’s lips came down on mine, moving against mine fast and angrily, like he was pissed off.
I gasped and pulled back the moment he gently bit my bottom lip, making me shiver,
“Tell me, Arabella.” His eyes were rid of any trace of amusement. “Who did you imagine as your husband?
My chest heaved up and down as I tried to catch my breath, my body almost melting into his as his hands came back down to my waist, holding me protectively like he was trying to stake his claim.
“Why… do you want to know?”
“I’ll tell you after you give me a name.”
Alvise looked calm, and his voice was even calmer, but that didn’t fool me.
His eyes were now dark, and his touch was so firm it almost made me jump.
There was no one else, and I had only said that to get a reaction out of him. While I’d expected him to be a little annoyed, I never imagined it to be this bad.
“Give me a name, Arabella,” he commanded, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I was a nervous mess, and I could barely sit still on his lap. “You’re going to hurt him.”
His jaw hardened, and he shook his head. “Hurt him? I don’t just plan to hurt him, Arabella.”
My eyes widened. “What… else do you plan on doing?”
His hand trailed up to my hair, and he pulled it back, tipping my head up so he could skim his lips over my neck. “I’ll kill him,” he said, his words laced with a promise I didn’t doubt he would fulfil.
A reckless tremble shot down my spine, and I hissed, holding his shoulder for support.
“Why?” I managed to ask, my blood running cold in my veins as I awaited his answer.
Alvise took his time, his lips skimming over each speck of skin on my neck before he used his hold in my hair to bring my face back to his. “Because I don’t like the thought of my wife thinking about someone else under my roof,” he said coldly.

Though my stomach fluttered with stupid butterflies, I rolled my eyes and straightened the moment he released his hold on my hair. “You don’t even like me, Alvise.” I scoffed. “Why would you kill someone who does?”
A dark look crossed his face, and he leaned back in the chair, stroking his chin. “Get up.”
My face fell. “What?”
“I said, get the fuck up.”
His voice was so harsh, I jumped from his lap and took a step back, desperate to get away from him.
Alvise looked eerily calm as he watched me, but his next words were anything but. “The next time you speak of another man in front of me, I can’t promise I’ll be able to control myself, Arabella.”
It was a threat.
One meant to scare me…
And it did.
But he didn’t have to know that. “I’ll do whatever I want,” I gritted out.
Alvise tilted his head to the side, a smirk so dark it gave me goosebumps appearing on his lips. “Do it now, Arabella. I fucking dare you.”
