Don’t Test Me…

ARABELLA’S POV

What happened?

I frowned, not knowing what to do about the sudden change in the atmosphere and Alvise’s mood.

I stepped away from the door just as Alvise opened it and walked outside, leaving me standing there with my brows furrowed together.

I was about to follow behind him, but then I remembered that I hadn’t taken my phone yet, so I quickly grabbed it from the nightstand and snatched up my bag on the way to the door.

I still hadn’t started using the phone, but I felt the need to have it just in case of an emergency.

What emergency? I had no idea. I just felt it was important to be extra prepared when you’re going to socialise with criminals.

“Brother!”

I stopped abruptly at the top of the stairs, the sound of heels clinking loudly against the marble floor making me turn towards the source of the sound.

Rozaliya stopped in front of me, almost breathless from how much she had run, and she clutched her

chest.

“Where’s my brother?” she asked frantically.

“Why were you running? If you slipped, it would have been a fatal fall,” I said, wondering how she had managed to run in her ballgown.

Rozaliya looked up, her eyes clashing with mine. “Running in heels is a skill.” She flicked her hair. “One that I actually have.”

“Okay…”

“Arabella.”

I tensed, looking down the stairs to see Alvise waiting impatiently with his hands slipped into his pockets.

I turned to Rozaliya and smiled. “I guess that answers your question.”

She sighed in relief and ran down the stairs. “Brother! I’ve been trying to speak to you all day!”

Watching them, I walked down the stairs, a little curious to know what their relationship was like.

“I don’t have time for this, Rozaliya,” Alvise muttered, glancing at his wristwatch. “Save it for when I get back.”

She groaned as she spoke, but I didn’t understand any of it because she was speaking Russian.

I avoided Alvise’s hard eyes and walked past him towards the door to wait outside so I could give them

some privacy.

Shit, I mumbled under my breath the moment the cold air hit my face.

When Alvise told me Moscow was cold, I never thought I was going to be freezing every time I stepped outside.

“Oh, hi!” I said to Igor and Simeon, the same guards who had served as witnesses to my marriage to Alvise.)

They exchanged a shocked look before merely nodding in my direction, like that was all they could do.

I still held a grudge against everyone who had contributed to me being forced to marry Alvise, but I was. ready to put that aside in order to befriend the guards for my own advantage when the time came.

I walked towards them, trying my best to ignore the several eyes that were fixed on me by the other rmen.

“When someone says ‘hi,’ it’s only right to say it back.”

Simeon cleared his throat. “We cannot greet you casually, madam.”

“And why is that?”

“You’re the Pakhan’s wife,” Igor said, making me roll my eyes. “We have to respect you.”

“Returning a harmless greeting is not disrespectful,” I explained, like I was talking to kids. “It’s actually more disrespectful to ignore someone’s greeting.”

They were both still yet to look me in the eye and it was hard to keep the conversation going when they constantly either had their eyes lowered or were looking above my head.

“We nodded when we heard you speak to us, madam,” Simeon mumbled.

“It was half-hearted.” I complained, looking between them. “You…”

They visibly tensed and straightened, their veins protruding on their foreheads from how much they were scowling.

“What’s with the faces?” I scoffed. “Are you trying to avoid this conversation…”

“Arabella, enough.”

I froze, my heart thundering in my chest as Alvise’s harsh voice cut through the air.

I didn’t need to see him to know he was pissed.

Shit.

The hairs on my nape stood at the same time I heard his footsteps approaching.

My gaze was lowered, so the first thing I spotted as he came to stand beside me were his shiny black shoes.

“Which one of you started the conversation with her?” Alvise asked calmly.

I wasn’t fooled by it.

I snapped my head up to see the guards looking terrified, almost shaking as they struggled to answer his question.

My fingers flexed, my hands almost shaking in panic as guilt, heavy and uncomfortable, settled in my

chest.

I couldn’t let them get in trouble.

I laughed awkwardly. “None of them started a conversation with me,” I told him, still not turning to look a him. “I did.”

I could feel the tension emanating from Alvise with each second that passed, so I closed my eyes, dreading

his next words.

“The car. Now.” He ordered, and then he walked away, heading towards the garage.

“I’m so sorry,” I said apologetically before trying to catch up with Alvise’s long strides.

He was already unlocking his car by the time I came to stand beside him, but before I could catch my breath, he grabbed my wrist and yanked me towards him, trapping me between himself and the car.

“What are you….” I trailed off, out of breath as his piercing eyes seemed to dig straight into my soul.

“Don’t test me, Arabella.” Alvise’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t.”

My lips trembled. “W…what… did I… do?”

“What did you do?” A muscle in his jaw twitched, a dark look crossing his face. “Did I tell you that you could fucking speak to my men?”

My stomach dipped. “It was just a conversation…”

“Never.” He seethed, cutting me off. “It should NEVER happen again.”

I should shut up.

I should let it go…

But I didn’t. “Why?” I snickered. “Are you saying I can’t even speak to anyone I want to?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying, yes.”

I stared at him in disbelief, waiting for him to laugh in my face and tell me he was joking, even though I knew the man never joked.

Alvise’s face was stoic and cold, rid of any amusement. He was dead serious, and that pissed me off even

more.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t.” I retorted, shaking my head. “You can’t do that…”

He pulled a gun out of his holster and took a step back. “Go on, Arabella. Go speak to any one of them.” He pointed to the troops of guards lining the property. “And I’ll blow their brains out.”
