I’ll Pass

ARABELLA’S POV

My whole body trembled as I stared at Alvise in disbelief, refusing to drop my gaze to the metal in his

hands.

I didn’t doubt that he would do it.

I would be a fool to think he was just bluffing, but still, I found it hard to believe that he had really just threatened to kill his guards if I spoke to them.

“What?” I rasped, my voice barely recognizable even to my own ears.

“You heard me,” he said calmly, pointing the top of the gun around the property again. “Pick the one you want to speak to and do it.”

“You’re crazy,” I breathed, pressing my back further into the car like that was somehow going to keep me away from him.

Alvise waited for a few more seconds, unfazed by my obvious display of fear, and when he realized I wasn’t going to take on his challenge, he returned the gun to its holster.

He stalked towards me, his eyes so dark I could barely see the blue in them. “You like to test my patience a lot.” He swiped his thumb across his lip. “I let it slide because I want to, he said coldly. “But don’t mistake that for a pass to disobey me.” His voice took on a dark edge. “Don’t.”

I glared at him, ignoring the shivers of fear that wrecked through my spine or the way my heart beat faster in my chest.

I was scared. Intimidated… you name it. But the last thing I was going to do was show him any sign of fear. “You don’t scare me, Alvise.”

He smirked, but there was no humour in his eyes. “Of course I don’t. I don’t want to scare you.” He shrugged, a muscle in his jaw twitching. “If I wanted you to be scared of me, you would already be.”

His words were twisted, but it was true. I knew it, he knew it, and the damn guards probably did too.

“Step away from the car.”

I scoffed and pushed off the car. “You don’t have to tell me twice.”

“Watch that tongue.”

“Or what?” I held his gaze, brushing my shaky fingers over his shoulder and jacket as I walked past him to lean against the SUV behind him. “You’ll blow my brains out?”

The scowl on his face deepened, like my words had only pissed him off more. “I’ll pass.”

“Why?” I blew away invisible dust from my nails. “Because I’m your captive?”

Alvise opened the driver’s door and got in before turning to look at me, his next words knocking the breath out of my lungs. “Because you’re my wife.”

My stomach fluttered with something dangerously close to butterflies as his words played over and over again in my mind.

Oh how I would have given anything to hear those words months ago.

But back then, I wanted it to be real… even now… I wanted it to be real.

But it wasn’t. The marriage was fake, and my feelings for him were one-sided. I shook my head, smiling bitterly.

It didn’t even matter anymore.

Even though I liked him, I wasn’t happy with the way things had turned out. I couldn’t be happy to be married to my captive, or to a man who probably only married me to save my life.

“What are you waiting for?”

I looked up to see that Alvise had already moved the car out of the garage and was leaning against it impatiently.

“Nothing.”

I walked to the car, noticing that, just like last time, two cars were in front and another two were at the back, leaving us in the middle.

“Are you with your phone?”

I looked up to meet Alvise’s gaze. “Hmm,” I hummed.

“You still haven’t used it,” he said, rounding the car to open the passenger door for me.

I followed behind him and got into the car. “I’m not going to use a bugged phone.”

He shut the door and didn’t reply until he got into the driver’s seat and started the engine.

“We’ll see about that.”

The ride had been eerily silent, with the only audible sound being the radio when I turned it on because of how nervous I had gotten.

Unfortunately, only love songs were being played, and it had been so awkward that I had to turn it off eventually.

The car finally pulled to a stop in front of a large building about a minute ago, but we were still in the car.

Alvise was typing on his phone while I stared at the building, wondering if it was a house or a hotel… or both.

The security outside was tight from what I could see, with only thumbprints being used as the determinant of who got in and who didn’t.

“Do they have the records of everyone invited?” I blurted, too curious to hold the question in.

Without glancing at me, Alvise nodded. “Yes.”

Wow does that work?”

“Technology.”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course, I know how thumbprints work, Sherlock. What I want to know is how they got everyone’s thumbprints. Did they have to come register it or what?”

Alvise took his time to send whatever message he had typed before flicking his eyes up to look at me. The Bratva has the database of every recognized member.”

I pursed my lips and frowned. “So, why did I come?”

Alvise leaned back in his seat, his bored and lazy gaze still fixed on me. “What do you mean?”

“You said they have the database of every recognized member,” I emphasized.

Alvise poked his inner cheek with his tongue. “I did.”

“I’m not one of you, and they don’t have my database. I’m not going to be allowed in,” I said, heaving a sigh of relief.

I was already starting to rethink everything, and seeing how serious just getting past security was, I was ready to leave.

“You’ll get in,” Alvise said, the corner of his lips lifting.

Hesitant, I asked, searching his unreadable face. “How sure are you?”

“Hundred percent.”

My stomach tightened, and I stared out the window, looking at the heavily armed guards. “What do they do to people who come but weren’t invited?”

Alvise scoffed. “You mean intruders?”

I turned back to look at him. “Yes. What happens to them?”

Alvise unlocked the car and opened his door, but before stepping out, he spoke, his cold voice sending a chill down my spine.

“They kill them.”
