Meeting With Criminals
ARABELLA’S POV
Before I could ask what they were talking about, Alvise turned and pushed the door open, walking into the room with an effortless calm.
It was the total opposite of what I felt the moment I set eyes on the large table in the middle of the room.
Everyone stood up, bowing their heads in what I assumed was respect.
My legs seemed to freeze, and I stood still, not caring that Andrei was behind me, gesturing for me to walk in with his hand.
People.
There were too many people… But worse, they looked exactly like what they were.
Criminals.
Scowling men, glaring women, and very few curious eyes. It wasn’t the obvious kind of aggression… It was subtle. The kind that wasn’t shown in their body language but in their eyes.
“You are late, Pakhan,” someone spoke from the table, and when I snapped my eyes in their direction, my breath hitched in my throat.
Ivanov.
What the hell was Tatiana’s father doing here?
Alvise walked further into the room, refusing to spare Ivanov a glance. “Say that to me again, and the last thing you’ll feel is my bullet darting into your throat.”
The room suddenly felt stiff, so silent it felt like people were holding their breaths.
I swallowed hard.
“Please walk in,” Andrei whispered impatiently, and hesitantly, I obliged.
My heels clicked against the marble floor with each step I took, veering everyone’s attention toward me.
My stomach twisted uncomfortably, the discomfort shooting down to my legs and making them wobbly.
I wanted to disappear.
“Let’s get this shitshow started, shall we?” Alvise said coldly, his voice lazy at the edges as he walked to sit at the head of the table.
He looked around, tapping his finger on the table for a few tense seconds before he spoke again.
“Sit.”
Chairs scraped over the floor as everyone took their seats, leaving the only people standing in the room

being the several guards present, Andrei, and me.
Why was a meeting called?” Alvise asked, tapping his chin. “I believe another one wasn’t scheduled unti! next week.”
Ivanov raised his hand, and so did two other men.
Alvise nodded to a bald man I guessed was in his forties. “You may speak, Urvan.”
The colour drained from Ivanov’s face, the disappointment from not being picked clear as day.
Urvan cleared his throat. “Thank you for honouring us with your presence today, Pakhan” He looked around. “Word got out that you ended your engagement with Ivanov’s daughter, Tatiana. First of all, as the rules demand it, we need to hear from you first and confirm if the rumours are true.”
Alvise nodded. “The rumours are correct. I called off the engagement a few days ago.”
Gasps erupted across the table, but no one dared say a word.
Urvan continued. “There was an agreement between both families, Pakhan… After the dreadful incident with your…”
“If you’re going to mention my uncle, I would advise you to swallow those words,” Alvise warned, his voice dangerously low.
My palms turned sweaty, and I rubbed them against each other.
What happened with his uncle, and how did that have anything to do with his engagement to Tatiana?
“I’m sorry, Pakhan,” Urvan apologised. “It was foolish of me to take it there…”
“Get straight to the point.”
Urvan shifted in his seat. “Ah, yes. The first thing the brotherhood wants to know is why you cancelled the
engagement.”
“Aside from the fact that I can do whatever the fuck I want,” Alvise scoffed, “I cancelled the engagement because of a series of events that I will reveal part of as the meeting progresses.”
Ivanov raised his hand, impatiently waving it so he could be chosen to speak.
I raised a brow.
Why was he so aggravated?
“Ivanov!” Urvan scolded. “I’m still speaking, and the Pakhan didn’t ask anyone a question!”
Alvise raised his hand. “Allow him. Let’s hear what the clown has to say.” He nodded at Ivanov. “You may speak.”
“This is a breach of agreement, and my daughter has been treated unfairly!…”
“You’re going to lower your tone and choose your words carefully, or you get the fuck out,” Alvise cut him off firmly.

I watched Ivanov as he gritted his teeth and drew a frustrated breath before speaking again.
Whe wedding was scheduled a few days away, and you just called off the engagement. My daughter is distraught and has barely eaten for days.”
Alvise tilted his head to the side and scraped his tongue over his teeth, his eyes flicking to me and then searching my face.
I shifted under the weight of his gaze and bit my lip, only realising what I’d done when he narrowed his
eyes.
I was about to look away in embarrassment, but then I remembered how cold he’d treated me, and I met his gaze head-on, biting my lip again just to spite him.
“Is that the only thing you’re upset about?” Alvise asked, his eyes still on me, unnerving me further.
“What… Do you… mean, Pakhan?”
Alvise looked back at him.
“I killed your son, remember?”
Ivanov’s eyes went bloodshot, so much anger and tension oozing off him that I could feel the heat of it from where I stood.
“I was getting to that!” he yelled, his whole body shaking. “You killed my son! My only heir!”
He attempted to jump on the table and run to Alvise, throwing off the glass of water in front of him, only to be stopped by the guards who grabbed him by the neck and held him still.
Like he was bored out of his mind, Alvise glanced at his wristwatch.
“This meeting could have been an email,” he seethed, his harsh voice not matching his calmness. “If you invited me to this shitshow just to have Ivanov cry about his son getting what he deserved, then I have some scores to settle with every one of you.”
At this moment, as another round of shocked gasps exploded around the room and I kept my eyes locked on the man who was supposed to be my husband, I realised something…
I didn’t know the extent of just how powerful Alvise was… yet.
Or how dangerous.
And it made me shudder.
Urvan raised his shaky hands, and Alvise nodded. “Speak.”
“You said you were going to reveal part of why you called off the engagement with Miss Ivanov, Pakhan…”
“Ah, yes.” The corner of Alvise’s lips lifted. It was dark, just like his eyes the moment they landed on me. “I got information that she was having an affair.”
My eyes widened, stunned, but my shock didn’t measure up to everyone else’s as hushed murmurs spread around the table.

Ivanov yelled, “No! That cannot be true! My daughter would never do that! Where’s the evidence? If it’s really true, who did she have an affair with?”
Alise leaned back in the chair, his next words making my heart skip its next beat.
“My father.”
