ARABELLA’S POV
What?
My mouth hung open as I searched Alvise’s face, trying to see if he was just pulling Ivanov’s leg.
It didn’t look like he was.
“You…” Ivanov trailed off, frantically shaking his head. “That cannot be true! Why would you accuse my daughter of having an affair with… your father?”
I wanted to know too because I was completely dumbfounded.
The thought of Tatiana sleeping with Alexei made my skin crawl, and bile rose to my throat.
Why would she do that?
For the few weeks that I’d known Tatiana, one thing that was unmistakably clear about her was that she was obsessed with her engagement to Alvise and couldn’t wait to marry him.
So, why would she ever want to jeopardize that by being with his father?
Alvise didn’t give Ivanov a reply immediately. He just shot him a hard look, the veins on the backs of his hands protruding as he clasped them together.
“You think I have the time to make up stories about your daughter?” He asked coldly, finally breaking the
silence.
Before Ivanov could speak, he shook his head. “Everyone else has permission to talk freely except him.”
Ivanov breathed out in frustration and turned to look at me, his eyes filled with rage as they narrowed.
If Alvise hadn’t ordered him not to speak, I was certain his next target would have been me.
“Pakhan.”
I looked up to see one of the women present speaking. “This issue has definitely escalated. It was just supposed to be about the engagement, but now there’s the case of Zavid’s death and the allegations about
Tatiana…”
A man cut her off. “The accusations are definitely false!” he said. “I’m not doubting you, Pakhan. I just feel like whoever gave you the information had ulterior motives.”
One of the women sitting close to Ivanov nodded in support. “Yes. It’s a very serious allegation, and I believe she’s innocent…”
“Just shut your trap!” someone cut her off. “You’re just kissing Ivanov’s ass because he helps you with your drug shipments!”
Before I could properly register who had spoken, the table broke out into different opinions, people agreeing, arguing, and trying to make their voices heard.

Through the chaos, Alvise calmly glanced at his phone screen, just as he’d been doing even before we entered the meeting room.
What was he always checking?
All I could do was watch, trying to figure out what he was up to but coming up with nothing.
Alvise glanced at his wristwatch calmly seconds later. “Enough,” he commanded firmly, and silence fell over the room.
He looked around, leveling everyone with a hard glare. “All this is just a cover-up.” He scoffed. “I know this is not why this meeting was called, is it?”
One of the men I’d yet to see speak finally broke his silence. “It is not,” he said, his voice hard at the edges. “Zavid’s death cannot go unnoticed.”
“I see,” Alvise muttered. “So, what do you want to do about it?”
The man ran his hand over his blonde hair and looked Alvise straight in the eye. “That’s why we called this meeting.”
Like he’d had enough, Alvise stood up, adjusting his cufflinks. “Let me tell you what you lot are,” he said, staring each one of them down. “Cowards.”
I felt Alvise’s harsh words hit my stomach, and it tightened as if I were the one on the receiving end of his wrath.
Alyise continued. “If you think I’m not aware that some of you are threatening a war because of Zavid’s death, then think again.” He stroked his chin, like he was deep in thought, before the corner of his lips lifted in a dark smirk. “But you’d be absolutely stupid to even for a second imagine you could start a war under my reign.”
“We don’t kill one of our own!” someone said. “And you went back on your word with Ivanov… a war has broken out for far less in the past…”
“And that was the past.” Alvise cut him off. “You’re welcome to try and see how I deal with fools.”
Ivanov resumed struggling with the guards, turning his head toward me. “Her!” he yelled. “She’s the woman he brought from London!”
My heart lurched out of my chest as everyone’s eyes landed on me again, the scrutiny of their gazes making my stomach dip.
They looked like vultures waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.
I didn’t dare look anyone in the eye because I knew that if I did, I would only become more terrified.
They were all powerful.
I could tell.
The only reason they seemed so helpless was because they were in Alvise’s presence.
I could see it… the way his authority superseded theirs and the respect they had no choice but to give him,

as a ‘nobody to them. Someone they could easily kill if I looked at them the wrong way.
The woman next to Ivanov snickered, pulling my attention toward her.
Her eyes were hard as she glared at me, a look of disdain on her face, like she’d never hated anything in her life until she saw me.
My chest tightened as the realization set.
She would kill me if she had the chance.
Her words were laced with venom when she spoke. “Who the hell is she, and how dare she step into our meeting room?…”
“She’s my wife.”
I released a shocked breath as Alvise’s announcement hung in the air, making the already tense room feel even more suffocating.
He slipped a hand into his pocket, sending the woman a look so cold that she immediately lowered her head. “Do you have anything else to say?”
“Your… Wi…fe,” she stuttered. “When… did you…”
“When and how I got married is none of your business,” Alvise said, walking away from the table and approaching me, his strides confident and unhurried.
Urvan looked so shocked that his eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. “Pakhan… this… will rile people up. The…”
“Your monologue would have been deeply appreciated if I gave a fuck.” Alvise shrugged. “I don’t. So keep it to yourself.”
Something seemed to have snapped inside Ivanov, and he managed to escape the guards, running toward us as he pulled his gun out of his holster.
He moved so fast, I couldn’t react or even process what he was about to do.
And then it happened.
A gunshot cut through the air, and I screamed, covering my ears and shaking uncontrollably with fear as my pulse spiked.
Who got shot?
